    Times change and now the most valuable part of a scrapped U-Boat is the steel.

    Even more valuable is pre war steel protected from the atmosphere by a reasonable layer of sea water.

    Low radiation steel provided enough profit for a friend of mine to buy the salvage rights to the turrets of a Scapa cruiser that turned turtle on tow to the scrapper off the north east coast of Scotland. The Kreigsmarine ship was salvaged from the shallow water at the time but the turrets were left on the sea bed.

    Each season he would recover a plate section and this provided income for the whole year for him and his extended family.

    He described his occupation as 3 day a year scrapman.

    The price hike for low radiation steel is still available today for those who wish to dabble.

    Yup Andy,

    Bit of dart board pattern with pins in the map.

    The original poster quoted R5601 which decodes to 50.60647603 N 1.00526708 E (in the Channel)

    (g) report gives R5061 decodes to 51.14700761 N 0.94515466 E (Quarrington Wood – East of Ashford)

    (k) report gives R5871 decodes to 51.23467494N 1.06381538 E (Fausett Hill/Red House Lane)

    The (k) report is closest to Street End/Lower Hardres.

    The map ref for Fw Ray’s aircraft from the A.I.l.(k) report is R.5871 not the R.5601 you have listed.

    Is it any good for detailed research on ww2 RAF officers ? No better than the information available on other gene sites and worse than specialist sites.

    Before I sign up, can they give me service history for a ww2 officer other than that in the RAF list ? Not before sign up and not after.

    I suppose what I expect is to type a name and find his service details, movements, dates etc

    Will I be disappointed ? Yes but not if you have low expectations and expect that they will not be attained.

    I think that you are describing the incident to Maj Schaffner USAF on 8th Sept 1970 in Lightning F.6 XS894.

    Edit – not the following Lightning – Creaking Door has it with ZD325 – Ross

    To quote W/C Spry

    “The wreckage was located nearly 2 months later with surprisingly little damage. The canopy was attached and closed, and there was no sign of the pilot. The aircraft appeared to have struck the sea at a low speed, planed the surface and come to rest comparitively slowly. The ejection seat handle had been pulled to the full extent allowed by the interruptor link in the main gun sear. (The interruptor link ensures that the seat does not fire unless the canopy has gone). The canopy gun sear had been withdrawn but the cartridge had not been struck with sufficient force to fire it (during servicing the firing unit had been incorrectly seated because of damaged screw heads). The canopy had been opened normally, the QRB was undone, as was the PEC, and the PSP lanyard had been released from the life jacket.

    It was concluded that the difficult task, carried out in rushed circumstances, combined with a lack of training in this profile, led to the pilot failing to monitor his height while slowing down. He had inadvertently flown into the sea but had attempted to recover the situation by selecting reheat; this was ineffective with the tail skimming the water. He attempted to eject, but this was unsuccessful due to the canopy failing to jettison. He then manually abandoned the aircraft, but was never found. He was, therefore, presumed to have drowned during or after his escape.”

    F1180s give a different unit for P8568 not No.118 Sqn but No.610 Sqn with Sgt R W Richardson

    Crash is confirmed as Heathfield but airframe initially listed as Cat W for both airframe and engine.

    There is no other Spitfire crash at Heathfield on this day.

    Hi Gents,

    F1180 for P8526 says engine failure on approach, crashed with flaps and u/c down.

    Neither the flaps or the u/c in the photograph show damage sustained when down.

    So scratch P8526 from the possible list.

    She broke loose from moorings in November 1945, struck the rocks and sank in approx. 60 metres of water.

    Lying slightly deeper than the bulk of the North Sea between England and Holland but showing the effects of colder water and depth limiting the marine growth.

    The F1180 attributes the cause to Germany – the German mooring suffered a failure of the main wire between bouy and sinker. AOC forbid Sunderlands to use the German moorings and noted that they would not be renewed as British forces had left Norway.

    In the case of this airframe the engines had been changed but it serves as an example of what is recorded.

    If you have been living right then lady luck will show possible dates of previous FA accidents on the AM78. Use these to scan round for corresponding F1180s.

    There you go with the negative waves…

    If someone bent it earlier in service then the F1180 may give the numbers (hopefully it did not have a subsequent engine change at 100 hrs)

    This is an example of the card for a Cat B 1/8/42 for Beaufighter R2187 on Air Operations, finally written off in an accident 1944 with No.51 OTU.

    Hi Andy,

    For FA accidents (and some FB that were reclassified FA later) The Form 1180 gives the engine serials fitted at the time of the accident (Cat A to E and W/R/M depending on era).

    Not had a look to see if the recently released Casualty Packs have this for FB losses.
