Lo-mac was a huge disappointment to me and is about just as arcade, especially the Russian planes.

Sorry, but WTF do you mean? LOMAC is hard-core, not arcadey fluff like USAF or Jetfighter III.

The ones at rusarm.ru are lower quality, unfortunately. The first link is from the original, higher quality ones at rusarm.ru.

Not to coin a cliche, but how’re your drivers doing?

3rd one from the top is how Ka-52 is ‘meant’ to look-like (in its series production configuration).

I assume the heavy bomber attending is the Tu-160 that bears his name.

I think the SKM upgrades are more cost effective as they retain the antenna and the existing radar, instead of removing them completely, The SKM upgrade adds components and electronics upon an existing system. It’s a hack, and a very clever one at that.

The SMT upgrade would have required a brand new Zhuk radar set and FCS, which would cost a lot more. Or you may opt for the N019M, which can retain the existing antenna but add more modern electronic components. But for the same amount of complexity and cost, the N001VEP gives you a better performance output than the N019M. Plus all the testing has been paid for by the MKK program, you don’t need to perform another series of certification tests.

The N019M radar actually is the one on the MiG-29S. The MiG-29SMT originally was to use the N019MP, which is very similar to the Su-27SMs upgraded N001 in concept. The N019M1 has apparently replaced that now (according to http://www.overscan.co.uk/Avionics.html) – more sophisticated than the MP, but still retaining the same antenna.

Zhuk-ME is offered for export customers seeking new-build airframes (Yemen?)but for the VVS it was always N019MP/N019M1.

Actually, I was wondering aerospacetech, where did you find the info on the N019M1?

I like the Su-27SM upgrade better- being a more capable airframe to begin with they have a lot more potential. I’m still hanging out for the Su-25SM and Su-24SM upgrades to reach line units, though. MiG-29SMT and MiG-31BM are bonus goods that would be nice.

    Finally.

The RuAF is in dire need of these jets. How many are planned to go through the upgrade in total?

There are two conflicting reports- Jane’s says that the RuAF plans to upgrade aircraft built since 1989 (from a Jan 2003 report on the Su-27SM, saying “13-14 year old aircraft”)- while the oldest Su-27s are of course 18 years old.

Meanwhile JED Online says all aircraft are to be upgraded.

    What about the MiG-29SMT deal?

Still in existence, but starved of funds in comparison to Su-27SM. Like crobato said, when Kurnokov (sp?) left and Mikhaylov replaced him, he shook everything up- there were supposedly *seven* seperate Su-27 upgrades alone being funded. He cancelled them all except for Su-27SM.

crobato, your theory is most interesting- what would clinch it would be a picture of an Su-27SK with IFR probe and offset IRST, as on the Su-27SM. However, maybe they left that part out.

Umm Vympel………that info is on the KS-1. KS-1 was a failure. Never entered service. This is the improved KS-1A. Supposed to have entered service in 1999.

I would like to hear more info about the KS-1A. All I got is a Kanwa article and pieces of a scanned brochure.

Well, the picture of the KS-1A on the page kinda confuses the issue. It’s not like they’re easily distinguishable- the launcher is still fixed and the missile is the same configuration.

The KS-1A is actually one of the two finalists (along with the BUK) for the Malaysian Army’s medium SAM project.

I remember readng this somewhere, maybe CMF. China was to throw in ToT of the QW-1 as an enticer. I’ll post more if I recall where I saw this.

I remember seeing a picture posted here, but that’s all.

In Kosovo, the Apaches didn’t show very well. Most were shot down.
They didn’t destroy a single Serbian tank

IIRC, they weren’t deployed- they were too frightened of Serbia’s Igla-1s- in that terrain, it’s even more dangerous than normal- more places to hide. All I recall is that two crashed as the result of accidents.

They’d probably rely more on amphibious tanks which don’t need to be air-transportable.

Amphibious/ air-transportable tanks have non-existent armor. Regardless, China won’t have the capability to take Taiwan by force for the foreseeable future. All possible landing points are fortified, that an adequate amphibious force could even cross the strait isn’t guaranteed, and the intervention of the USN and USAF is assured.

Pretty no-frills compared to competitors, really. I’m surprised it was delayed in favor of S-300; it’s nowhere near the same class, so why was it considered as a viable alternative? Heck, Buk-M2 has more impressive stats than that, and it was never intended to do the job of S-300P or S-300V.

That is no real surprise, Russians were already fighting F-15 over Atlantic Ocean some 10 years ago.. IIRC, it was a Su-27S and Su-27UB against two F-15C and one F-15D and the results were widely published in the PKR mag.

Isn’t that they mythical story that keeps on popping up all the time? I’m pretty sure it wasn’t like that at all.

Besides that, Su-30MK-1? Isn’t it just Su-30K? As I understand it, India’s initial Su-30 batch didn’t have any ground-attack capabilites (hence the M).

Nothing new I’m afraid. They’ve only given a value for their Mi-28N purchase- being 300 planned, with 50 of those before 2010. I suspect the Mi-24PN upgrades will make up the difference.

I’m also at a loss to see why the Ka-52 is more suited to special forces support.

It’s just another one of those fanciful US weapons programs, the ones that would probably make some sort of sense if they weren’t all PowerPoint insane over there.

Did I mention how much I despise PowerPoint? It’s turning us into morons.
