Thanks for all the replies:)- the Magister seems to fit the bill as I remember that the film showed yellow painted wooden wreckage.
Cheers again Rad.
And the David has given would make it about the right time as was 10 y/o in 1974, so this’ll be the aircraft- what a great shame to hear the outcome of post recovery.
Regards Rad.

Not sure where this post should be posted on here, but I’m looking for information about the aircraft (westland whirlwind) that took part in the charity event organised by RAF Finningley where it was pushed around Doncaster town centre to raise money for the childrens hospital.
Does anyone know which whirlwind it was or it’s registration number?
It is very probable it was the same Whirlwind they used to hang from a hangar roof truss and winch people up and down on during the Airshows.
Have you tried contacting the Yorkshire helicopter Preservation Group at Aeroventure via 01302 761616? – they may be able to help.
Failing that, I seem to remember the helicopter being listed in W&R 8th- 10th editions when RAF Finningley was still operational.
Sorry its all I can offer at the mo’
Regards Rad.:)
If you’re including bits of aircraft i.e. Me 110 fins, what about the IWM’s Meteor wingtip?
Removed from Meteor EE277 YQ-Y 616 Sqn- Dixie Dean’s aircraft in which he tipped that V1 after his guns failed.:D
I suspect this may well be WZ557……..
Any Idea which units this operated with?
As she is already now a little bit of a mixed child as per PA-474, how about leaving her internally and externally as is, but change the unit markings once every two years or so to represent the character of a particular aircraft from the gruelling early 39-42 era such as 75 (NZ) Sqd, 149 etc etc. A little like BBMF but on the ground.
A retro silver turretless external representation will be correct but what really is the point now?
I’ve muted the idea before of museum aircraft being used to represent different schemes as per the BofBMF, so admit I agree with you.
Unless the Wellington is not going back into the Bomber Command Hall, why not finish an aircraft in a standard scheme & periodically apply different Squadron codes using removable vinyl codes & insignia? – In this way you can represent any unit that operated the type – including early, late far Eastern & (admittedly wartime) training units.
I don’t object to the silver scheme, but feel that to finish the aircraft as such will dilute what was achieved by its crews in its primary role as a bomber.

Hi Nige, Happy new Year to you.:)
I’ve just looked at the original photo’s- is it really only 4 1/2 years since her arrival at Aeroventure:eek:. Originally you said it would take 10 years, but at this rate she’ll be flying next year.:D
Every time I go over its always nice to see her coming together a little bit more- boy does she look good.
I’ll see you sometime soon.
all the best Stuart.
Hi All
I hope the moderators will let this post run as it is directly related to the restoration of DH88 Comet ‘Black Magic’
The woodwork on the fuselage is about complete as we have finished the new top fuselage tank bay covers. The web site for those who havent seen it yet is http://www.cometracer.co.uk but I have to say it is now slightly out of date and I will speak to the volunteer who looks after it about uploading the latest info and pictures
We have now reached the stage where we are looking to start to build the wings and need to get the spruce we have machined to size for the main spars and outer planking. We do have a large planer thicknesser but are looking for a large bandsaw (the very large ones seemed to be called a re-saw) to cut the spruce baulks down to size. We have been looking on the web and e-bay of course but nothing at a sensible price and I wonder if any of the forum members know of one that might be for sale.
I hope with all the forum members contacts somone can help
many thanks
Ken
Ken, Just a suggestion… is it worth putting an appeal out to any nearby building companies who have their own Joinery facilities to cut the wood for you, through local or the national press?
Or try Boulton & Paul, who I believe now exist as a joinery.
All the best Rad
Happy new year folks…….with all the best for 2011:):)
A very Merry Christmas & all the best for 2011 to all.:):):)
It’s available on the BBC iplayer for a while if you missed it:-
http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b00wmc3n/Sheffield_The_Forgotten_Blitz
Besides Andy’s contribution, it was nice to see Dr. Mike Diprose demonstrating X-Gerät, the target locating device in use by the Luftwaffe at that time.
Mike is a regular at the Newark aerojumbles and organises the annual Military and Radio Electrojumbles at Aeroventure, Doncaster, also presenting the lectures afterwards, usually on some radar/battle of the beams type topic.
Quite a short but interesting programme nonetheless.
Those who enjoy picking holes in this sort of programme will spot the Italian Air Force, as well as a large part of RAF Bomber Command 😮 apparently supporting the Blitz on Sheffield. And a Kittyhawk to illustrate the vital role Sheffield played in producing crankshafts for Spitfire engines.
Does anyone know how long it wil be on I-player for please?
Rad,
I am one of the organisers of the memorial to the crew of HE821.
We are now in touch with all the families and members of all five are hoping to attend the ceremony on May 21st 2011.
Additionally Canadian Forces and the RAF will be sending representatives and we are hopeful that we may get a flypast by the BBMF Lancaster.HE821 was one of a batch of 672 Vickers Wellington X’s that were delivered between November 42 and May 43 by Vickers-Armstrongs, Hawarden,Chester.
The aircraft intially served with 429 (Bison) Squadron RCAF at East Moor.
I’ve not been able to find details of its service with 429.The accident occurred on August 5th 1944 at the end of a 6 1/2 hour cross country exercise.
Hope this is of some interest.
Pete Allam.
Thanks for that Pete, please look at your PM’s For my number as I would to have a chat:)
By the way, I’ve just noticed its your first post on the forum so -” welcome to the forum “.
When I was 12 ( mid 70’s) I had a poster on my wall showing aircraft of the Royal Air Force.
Phantoms, Buccs , Harriers, Lightnings, Hawks, Hunters, Jags, Gnats, Vulcan, Victor VC10, Herc, Belfast, Shacks, Andover, Pembroke, Dove, Chipmunk, Dominie, Jetstream Bulldog, Argosy, Varsity, and so forth……to about 33 types as I recall.
What now ? 12 ?
Fings ain’t wot they used to be:(
Was that the one that came free with ” Speed & Power ” Magazine ?
B****er, that’s me age given away.
Hi all,
Does anyone have a contact for the museum there? Would like to try and view the site before it becomes a housing estateThanks
Try giving RAF Uxbridge switchboard a call & ask for Chris Wren on 020 8845 2300.
I got to visit in 2001 when I was at the station practicing for the RBL Festival of rememberence & it was well worth a visit.:)
Indeed, it is ex-recruitment GR.3 XZ135, thus….
