    Hi Peter

Ah, now you are visiting the eerie world of a comittee run organisation, never a pretty thing…..
I count myself very lucky with XS186, having met the Friends of Metheringham and agreed excellent terms up front for the one available hardstanding on the actual visitor site.
Space is at a premium however and the site has to support various events throughout the year, open days, reunions, enthusiast meets etc etc.
The hardstanding is required to cater for our unique ‘all weather’ seasons, so whilst being very accomodating for the Hunter and second JP, that support has a practical limit.

We the ‘crew’ are eternally grateful for the solid support the friends provide, in a beautiful spot that inspires everyone that visits, and that includes the crew, that still marvel at the spot we find ourselves in evey Saturday. It’s a privilege to work with everyone there.
Thankyou to the friends, and the rest of the XS186 crew, utterly irreplaceable.

You’ve done a cracking job there Paul & co. Congrats to you all- Paul I’ll PM you in the next few days with my No. to give us a call – Stuart.

I’ve just been contacted by a man from the BBC, looking to find out if it is possible to obtain a full-scale fibreglass replica Spitfire “kit”, which will be built up during the course of a TV programme presented by James May. This is part of a new series “James May’s Toy Stories”, where he will attempt to enthuse today’s children by building a full-scale model!

I’ve already dropped a PM to Graham Adlam on this forum, but if anyone else knows of any possible sources, please let me know. As this is for TV, they would like some information… yesterday?!

Also, they were hoping to have a WW2 Spitfire pilot on the programme. If anyone can help in that department, I’m sure they’d be grateful.

Dan can you please look at your PM’s & give me a call.

    Regards Rad.

Ok, allow me to ellaborate on my way of thinking. Many collections have replicas on display of both rare & common aircraft, because the real thing either doesn’t exhist or is prohibitally expensive. But how many would allow the public direct access, particularly in aircraft such as Spitfires.

The static “Spitfire” I’d love to build would be externally, in the cockpit & other areas such as the main fuselage, gun ports & engine identical to a real one.

The internal flying surface structure that cannot be accessed could be simplified when manufactured – visitors won’t see this so it doesn’t need to match a real aircraft.

By doing this visitors can get the oportunity to get to see & “feel” of what it was like for both pilots & groundcrew, all without the risk of damaging a real aircraft- yes replicas like I envisage do have their merit.

This is not set to pass off as the real McCoy & decieve, but the opposite- to give them an experience they don’t usually get in museums.

My first Spitfire was as an 8 year old at of all places M. Tusaudd’s in 1972-they had a replica to illustrate a Battle of Britain display. At the time I neither cared whether it was real or not- I had never seen one other than in film or on photo, but was over the moon at the chance. The next day at the Science Museum I did see a real one & was just as excited.

At the end of the day as members of a museum all we want to do is give the best we can to visitors, especially children & allow them that same buzz & walk away pleased with what they saw.

Tony (Rocketeer) has provided a good potential cost break-down for the representative level of Spitfire he is making, and should provide someone with an idea up front of what they are committing themselves too, if they want to achieve the same.

There are some great privately built static Spitfire projects around… of which I can name 4 off the top of my head, including Stuart and Tony’s. What is clear though, is that becuase it is a famous Supermarine type, the associated costs of the parts are so much more than others. For the price of a new set of cowlings, one could purchase a complete vampire for example.

In my mind, it begs the question, if someone had the money and skill to undertake such a static reconstruction, could they apply their efforts to an extinct type, rather than make A.N.Other Spitfire? It is possible!

Radpoe Meteor, are you close to, or associated with an aircraft museum or airfield? What were the main types operated in your county? Are there any other types of a/c that would be interesting to museum visitors?

David, the simple answer to your 1st question is yes, I am a member of Aeroventure. The main (WW2) types operated locally were Austers, Lysanders, Hampdens & Wellingtons,

I also have a great deal of respect & affection for 616 (South Yorkshire) Squadron, as a late family friend told me many a tale of when he served with 616 post-war.Indeed my forum monica is my own little tribute to 616 Squadron (Radpoe- their B of B radio callsign, Meteor- 616, 1st to operate).

That said, the more I learn about 616 the more I want to bring greater awareness to the Squadron’s acheivements- particularly in their home town, which, sadly for many a Squadron, have all but been forgotten.

Briefly, the Sqn had many members who became famous & honours include air cover for Dunkirk, the B of B, part of the Tangemere wing, highest number of successful returned pow escapees,1st to operate Spitfire Mk VI,
1st to operate Meteor & (post war) winner of the Esher Trophy,-not bad for Auxillaries . So to be able to see at Doncaster an aircraft type they operated would be fantastic.

Personally, IMHO, I would like to see replica Spitfires & Hurricanes at every aircraft museum that doesn’t have them, & dedicate them to all Squadrons & the pilots who served during the Battle of Britain. I also believe it should be taught, in a balanced manner, as part of the School curriculum.

Sorry if I went off track a bit, but thank you for all your comments so far.

    Regards Rad.

I like all your replies & fully understand that it begs the questions, if I had that sort of money, to what authenticity & why not make it a flyer?

The reasons for a static would simply be to house it in a Museum for all to enjoy at close range.

As for accuracy, internal would not matter greatly, however it would be nice to display some panels made to open or be removable.

Ok I don’t knock & certainly would not dismiss having a fibre-glass replica, but wouldn’t it be nice for visitors to walk up to the model & tap a real alloy panel.

At the moment thats my thinking- keep the replies coming.

    Great pics.

What’s the odd-looking Japanese fighter(?) in pic.5? Looks like a Nakajima of some sort, but the gear doesn’t look right

(Also, there’s a Tora! replica Val in amongst those shots 😉 )

I forget the name, but will look it up- what I can tell you is that it was a plywood design to be used for Kamekazi attacks, the gear was jettisoned after take off- hence the odd appearence.

Whilst there are a couple of them I’ve seen before, the rest are new to me- fantastic photo’s, thank you for sharing them.:)

I noticed there are a number of Macchi 202’s , but are there any Macchi 205 shots please? the most noticeable difference is the 205 has two cylinderical filters under the nose- I am mianly after any that are post-armistice, i.e. with tri-colour national markings.

Before they scrap her, someone ought to recover those brand new, crated aircraft from the hangar before they’re scrapped too.

Or is that just a vicious rumor?;);)

It’s definetly not the one at Morton, that was L7775 & was recovered by members of South Yorks Aircraft Museum.

The tail section went there & wings to East Kirkby.
