That was a very quick reply to my very first post on this site (lightnings in Aden)so I shall try with perhaps an even harder question!!While stationed at Oakington I was given the job of looking after the Link trainer and varsity crew traing aid, this was a replica cockpit to assist pilots familiarise themselves with the controls etc:Many years later I came across it at the then Torbay aircraft museum(run by Kieth Fordyce ex BBC disc jockey). This museum has been closed a number of years now ,would anyone happen to know what became of the Varsity training aid?!!

Might this be said Varsity training aid?

Whats happening with Bed Sheet Bomber. is she still with Barry? Is she for sale or is she been restored?

Was at Booker yesterday as it happens and she is still with Barry who is working on her when time and work permits ๐Ÿ™‚

Just my two cents worth but I think it should be restored and saved being it is the only the 4th complete victor to survive!

    Except there are 5 ๐Ÿ˜‰

Duxford, Cosford, Marham, Elvington and Brunty.

I would be surprised if they welded successfully. They are probably a T4 or T6 material and that does not weld well. Dont be surprised if this doesnt work.

I probably have most of the instruments. Got any piccies to aid identification?

    Bruce

True but worth a try! Am quietly hopeful as one of CF’s panels has had a repair job at some point in its history. After that it might be a case of making a few of the instruments load bearing :p lol

Picture wise all I currently have is a general shot of inside VT at Duxford that I founf on the net ๐Ÿ™ – working on the assumption that VT and VS will be the same.

    Ross,
Thanks for putting the picture of the PR9 panel on the forum, not sure why I am unable to do so.

    Dear restoration experts,
At the moment I am restoring some large aircraft throttle boxes (Vickers Viscount and Vickers Varsity), does anyone know the best way of treating corrosion, is there any substance I can brush on (as opposed to dipping the whole throttle box in a liquid) in order to remove rust and corrosion without damaging the original paint work? Any recommendations would be appreciated, Thankyou.

Not had cause to use this stuff myself but seen it get good reviews elsewhere – http://www.bilthamber.com/deoxgel.html

    Morning all,

Having hammered the instrument panels out of Brit “VS” flat again and sent them off to be welded up (all bar one had been cut in two…) have turned my attention to sourcing the bits and bobs to fill them.

To that end does anyone have the following going spare (ideally 2 of each! ๐Ÿ™‚ ) ?? Also you would never guess I have copied this straight from teh parts catalogue would you? ๐Ÿ˜€

    Jon

    Part Number Description

    KB224/05W Indicator, airspeed (Kelvin H) (Alt. KAB 0804W for 312 and 317)
    PW/9SFS-2 Director, horizon (Smithโ€™s) (Mod 1613)
KB251/02W Indicator, rate of climb (Kelvin โ€˜Hโ€™) (Alt. KRA 0202W)
    KAA1603-W Altimeter (Kelvin and Hughes)

From memory nothing was fitted from the word go. Was designed in but never used.

    [QUOTE=XM692;1146788]Peter/Jon,

Thanks. Although it’s like this…. as Gnat parts are made of ‘unobtainium’, do you crack on with what you have ? Or wait for them to turn up, if ever ?

    QUOTE]

Quite right – crack on with what you have got! You never know what will turn up one day……. ๐Ÿ˜€

Just hoping that whilst I am kitting out my Brit instrument panel I dont encounter parts made of this unobtainium stuff :p Am still even holding out a faint hope of locating a co pilots panel!

Then when I finally acquire a cockpit (garage has just been cleared and looking invitingly empty :diablo: ) goodness knows how hard that will prove to source parts! ๐Ÿ˜ฎ

Well you know my views on helping friends ๐Ÿ˜€ And when we do come up, I promise I will keep Heidi away from any paint / paintbrushes ๐Ÿ˜‰ As for the weather its now being aeroplane friendly down here too and Im still stuck with this stinking cold ๐Ÿ˜ก Bex

We lost our patience last week and just worked through the rain ๐Ÿ˜€ Was an interesting being wedged under a Brit rivetting whilst having ice cold rain running down your back lol

    Just a few ideas:

Would it be acceptable to save one to the detriment of the other?

It is a vast space – could it be turned into something else – the largest single span aluminium hangar in Europe (at Hatfield) is now a Gymnasium…

There have been instances of things being built inside historic structures (e.g. Churches), which dont affect the fabric of the original building, but allow their use as private dwellings. Given that you could get a number of private dwellings inside this one, would that be an acceptable use?

    Any thoughts?

    Bruce

At Speke Hangar 1 is now a David Lloyd sports centre and Hangar 2 is a call centre. Would have been nice to keep them as hangars (so we could put our toys inside :diablo: ) but at least the fabric of the building has been preserved for future generations to enjoy.

Don’t worry, you are not the only one in danger of contracting AIDS:

    Aircraft
    Induced
    Divorce
    Syndrome

Hmm i think i got a taste of that on Sunday when trying to explain why i had been at Speke for the last 10 hours and I aint even married yet!! ๐Ÿ˜ฎ

I tried the “but we were doing a job that had to be finished once started line” and she swiftly replied with “hmmm, but you seem to do one of those every weekend ๐Ÿ˜ก ”

    Oh well! ๐Ÿ˜€
