The Gooses (Geese?) operated by the RAF were impressed/obtained ex-Civillian types – MV993 in the UK by 24 SQuadron, HK822 in the Middle East (By the ASR Flight). The former was an ex-UK civilian type, the latter came from the US as a donation (In spite of what has been written elsewhere, they were two separate airframes).

The Lend-Lease Goose wnet to the FAA as stated, with the exception of the two used by the BAC.

Phil Butler’s Air Arsenal North America has full details of the allocations.

    .

Me too – is this the 402 squadron a/c with a combat record?

602, but yes! I’d also love to know what she was swapped for!!

I think you’re confusing the issue regarding ‘109s here. The Duxford aircraft was always known about, and ‘basically spent 50 years unrestored in a shed’ before being sold to the IWM and (partially) restored to static display condition. I’d like to see them finish off the paintwork on the cowlings, though……… 🙁

Ta, I did wonder if I was confusing it with one of the other ones that has appeared in recent years.

It may have been known about, but not widely – it wasn’t on a list of 109 survivors I recall seeing in the 80s.

I’d be interested in hearing if any of the esteemed membership here has any other examples of this kind of resurrection?

Comper Swift G-ACGL must be the most recent example of this.

    Duxford’s Bf-109E-4/WkNr. 1190 is another.

I can probably think of several more given time (Excluding things like the Indian DH9, Indian Bf109 or Bristol Fighters in barn roofs!) – wasn’t there another Bf109E that basically spent 50 years unrestored in a shed?

Cbut some careful thought and prioritisation could have got a C130 (walk through display anyone?), Jaguar, Harrier GR5/7/9 and a Nimrod into London. Maritime and AT are woefully under-represented at Hendon, I think one example of each from the 70s-00s (both with far more distinguished combat histories than other ac at Hendon) is not too much to ask?

I beleive the RAFM is due to get a Harrier GR9 soon – whether at Hendon or more likley Cosford initially (until they work out how to move the airframes around)

Jaguar is another one with a considerable combat history that you would think should be included at either Museum

AT and MR types have the misfortune of being big, and that means having to find space as much as transportation costs – Could Hendon fit a C-130 into the buildings without losing several others for example? I am slightly surprised they didn’t get a NImrod cockpit for Hendon to go with the full airframe that’s going to Cosford – that would have given them a Nimrod presence and an interesting walk through.

This thread has gotten me round to having a look at the complete lists of aircraft held by the RAFM at both Hendon and Cosford. Clearly there is a “hard core” of aircraft which have a totally Royal Air Force pedigree i.e. the three V bombers.

However there are many aircraft that find their way into the collection by other routes. For example most of the “research and development” aircraft at Cosford while wearing military serials did not serve with the RAF but rather with manufacturers or development agencies. Several very important aircraft are included on that basis, TSR2 to name but one.

Two other groups spring to mind, aircraft of our adversaries and aircraft of our allies. Both these groups contain significant, important and very viewable aircraft but few with a direct RAF connection. Personal favourites of mine are the Stranraer and the Catalina. The Stranraer of course has connections to the Spitfire via R.E.Mitchell. It should also be remembered that it is unlikely we would have had Stranraer had it not been operated for many years by a civilian company.

The RAFM collection policy has changed a bit over the years – I recall at one point it was calling itself ‘The RAF Museum of Aviation History’ – I think Cosford was a separate museum until the two were combined into one entity, so it’s collection developed in a different way (The R&D stuff for example).

The Stranraer, although not an RAF example, is representative of the type in RAF service, as is the Catalina. A later Director stated that he would only obtain aircraft with a proven RAF heritage (I think at the time the ultimate destination of the Finnish Buffalo was being discussed).

These days it seems to be ‘aircraft related to the RAF and it’s people and other historic aircraft’

could it not go on loan to another museum?

I’d agree – let Yeovilton have it on loan

Following on from the discussion of questionable types in the RAFM, wasn’t there once a Miles Hawk Major in the collection? I seem to remember seeing it at Henlow in the late 60’s.
I wonder what happened to it.

    Still at Stafford I beleive:

To my mind the Mohawk’s connections are a bit more tenuous but it is just great to see a unique aeroplane, flown at one time by one of the world’s acknowledged aviation pioneers, resurrected.

It has a very definite and strong link with the RAFM, being an ex-RAF aircraft, serial HM503!

Having read all the convoluted reasons why the RAF Museum might wish to display a Comper Swift and a Miles Mohawk, who is going to come up with a good one for displaying the Flying Flea at Cosford ?

A Flying Flea was used as an experimental AOP platform during an Army exercise in the 30s

Didn’t some squadron leader have a Swift painted up in camoflage & roundels during WW2, might just be my dodgy memory, but I’m sure I have seen a photo of it somewhere ???.

There were two Swifts used by RAF units during the War – G-ABPE used by the CO of 25 Squadron, in night fighter black, and G-ABWW (a Gipsy engined example) used by 247 Squadron.

Never seen a pic of either, but would love to do so.

So, like the Miles Mohawk, the aircraft as a type does have an RAF history.

A-B’s Comper Swift file is available to download here:

Related to the 100th anniversary of the RFC, 100th anniversary of the formation of Nos 1,2,3 and 4 Squadrons of the Royal Air Force.

Sadly No 1 is disbanded at present (Can’t beleive they haven’t found a way to have it back for the 100th) but 2,3 and 4 are all current, so we should hopefully see some special schemes.

I wonder if they could be tempted to finish it in the colours of the Swift that served with 25 Squadron wearing night fighter black?
