I think if the CAA were being ‘overly cautious’ they wouldn’t have allowed the Vulcan to fly in the first place.

They are a naturally conservative organisation, so it still amazes me that we have the largest most complex war bird in the world flying on the UK register.

I couldn’t comment on the other two matters, but I’ am sure there are good reasons though.

Whilst it may be fair game to have a go at the overall management of the project, (I wouldn’t know), I think it is disappointing to read people calling for the resignation of the engineering team just because the Permit to Fly was not renewed in time for the aircraft to appear at an airshow.

I think a lot of people underestimate quite what was achieved in returning this aircraft to airworthiness and the difficulties in managing its continued operation.

I understand everybody is entitled to their point of view, what I don’t get is why people feel the need to air it in public when at best it is often naive and worst just plain ignorant of the practicalities of airworthiness management of a complex obsolete ex military aircraft.

There now seems to be too many people on here waiting in the wings ready to have a pop at pilots, engineers or operators at the slightest of excuses.

I can fully see why we don’t get the good gen on here like what we used to.

Maybe if it wasn’t for the guy with the camera, it wouldn’t have crashed?

Have the American plug mod done and fit REL 37Bs,I did and haven’t had a problem since doing it-and the plugs are cheap!

    Hi Mudmover

Is it much of a mod to fit these plugs to a Gipsy?

Light Aero Spares or Skytrade sell spark plugs for Gipsy’s.

Skytrade don’t have a website, their telephone number is 01884860202.
Probably about the same price as LAS though, not cheap :eek:

If KLM are anything to do with financing the project then I think this is fairly understandable given the huge losses Air France / KLM are making at the moment.

    Good post mjr.

There is a lot of rubbish posted about the CAA on here.

There is a set of rules for certification of ex Military Aircraft, BCAR A8-20, available on the CAA website (where would be without rules?) . Pick ‘complex category’ tick the boxes and you to can have a flying Lightning*.

For people out there who think the CAA are out to stop all our fun, ask yourself this which country operates the largest, heaviest most complex warbird in the world?

*A triple euromillions roll over may be required.

Typically 3-4% of hull value sometimes a lot more in Australia, thus for a Tiger Moth that is about A$3000 approx.

The posting about paying 750 pounds I presume which in real money is about A$1,700 since the typical vintage aeroplane flys about 10-15 hours a year, that is about A$150 an hour – direct operating costs for the Auster are about $50 per hour and about A$1000 for annual inspection. Is that 750 pounts just for public liability insurance, if so what might the hull instrance be?

That makes the insurance the killer cost in my opinion.

    cheers

£750 (in real money) is public liability and hull insurance. I think 10 – 15 hours is a little conservative even for serious warbirds. I average around 30, so I find fuel the largest expense.

The Auster averages 35 litres / hour at my current club price of £1.10 /litre. Although last summer we were paying up to £1.60 / litre 😮

Yes I have looked at taking one apart and Jon is quite correct, that wing is a bit of a nightmare, not only does it not come apart easily but it’s huge!

I think it would be easier to put one into a ferryable status and fly to where it needs to go, assuming you have somewhere to land it that is!

For my humble Auster its about £750 / year, which covers two passengers.

My car insurance is about £600, so I think that makes the Auster quite good value.

    G-AOLK

Just checking G-INFO, the Prentice has a current C of A.

It appears to have been owned by the same person since 1971, which must be some kind of record!

    Impressive rudder lock. 😮

One of the Meteors I think – NF12 at Cranwell?

    That be one of them.

Do you remember that chap from the RAF that helped us?

His plan was to remove the outer wing panel fairings, using some rope and his motorbike?

Our plan was to stand well back and watch, as the rope snapped and he disappeared, clinging on to his bike, as it shot off at a rate of knots down the taxiway.

I don’t think we saw him again after that.
