I’ve never heard that, and I would think smaller in section, interesting theory though.
The wings are based on Shackleton Mk.3.
When I started work as an apprentice, the Companyโs training instructor was ex AWA Drawing Office. He said that the tail booms were based on NF Meteors, as AWA were manufacturing them at the time the Argosy was being designed.
He also said the wings were Shack, with Viscount nacelles tacked on. I also remember him saying originally it was going to be powered by two Tyneโs, which is why there is a big gap between the inboard engine and the fuselage. But when the Tyne was looking less than promising they switched to four Darts.
In hindsight perhaps four Tyneโs would have been the best option
Didn’t have any involvment in moving XN819, but have worked on the tail boom of other Argosy’s, and moved a couple of Meteors and they are very similar!
Joe there were some on ebay last week.
Thanks for the heads up.
I had done a search on ebay, but clearly not well enough!
Item duly purchased, and not a bad price either.:)
Is there any truth in the rumour that the tail booms were based on Meteor fuselages
Prototype Auster J5/F Aiglet Trainer, G-AMMS, in the middle. Still going strong down in Devon I believe
Nice overalls….
You would think, given the vast amount of hangar space at Binbrook, that there would be someone charitable enough to allow the Lightning a corner to sit in ๐
Popped up to the hangar today for some tools and found this in the bottom of an old tool box:

Possibly off G-APRL (picture taken just after t/o on the final flight):

err friendly sea vixen type couplings matt? I don’t think so, they are about as friendly as bite in the rear from a Doberman!. they are effin awful, they make a god awful bloody mess in the time it takes to unscrew the little ****es from the pumps!!
I am sure this has been thought about, but couldn’t the aircraft be retro fitted fitted with the NATO type?
Supermarine Spitfire.
Oh I forgot, it already is.
We can’t ๐
Moggy
Felthorpe
What was the British obsession with rear engined jets? About the only one that wasn’t would have been the BAe/HS/DH 146 – and that has a T tail. 125, 111, VC10, Trident…
Best place for those noisy old Viper, Spey and Conway’s is down the back, and it makes for a really nice clean wing. ๐
I like the way you dream….
Where the engines run when she was parked on the otherside of the airport? Old location..
Yes. A long time ago though!
Nice to see he’s still about! I’ve got some pics somewhere of ‘HH prior to its conversion, taken at Swanton Morley in about 1988 at an Auster Club Fly In. If I can find a way to scan them, I’ll post them……..
I’am sure that will cheer up the currently u/s ‘mudmover’ no end if you could!
The last Vickers Vanguard flight was on October 17 1996 when G-APEP was ferried from Coventry to Weybridge.
Correct date, but it was Castle Donington to Weybridge. I have some video to prove it somewhere.
Not sure who this shifty character is in Ginger Lacey’s old machine, he turned up, drank all the tea, and then disappeared into the murk from whence he came. ๐

Thank you for the link.
The Beaufighter is looking good too.
It looks like it is neck and neck with the Blenheim ๐
