I have to say you are not endearing yourself very well here, you are full of sense – NON sense. Infact to the point where you are very naive.

Do you know what volcanic ash does to jet engines? Do you know how little injestation it takes for there to be a problem? Do you know about upper and lower winds and what happens to volcanic ash in the lower/upper atmosphere? Infact do you know the risks involved in flying anywhere near volcanic ash? I would have to say I think not.

Shall we leave your ill-informed and uneducated guesses off the forum? It may serve you better in the long run 🙂

For anyone who’s interested here is a link to today’s sig weather chart from 12:00z located here.
You will notice the North Atlantic JetStream taking the ash South East bound towards central Europe.

    Notice Mt Etna is active…………again

Then if you check out the next link it is of the upper winds at FL180 for 00:00z tonight, the link is here.
Notice how at the lower level of FL180 the winds have veered and decreased, taking the ash directly over the UK and Western Europe, here-in lies the problem (EGPH)

    1. So Mr Cessna is allowed up but big sturdy Mr 747 isn’t. If you are going to shut down airspace, shut it all down not just for the big boys!

    2. Mt Etna is active and PMO is as active as ever!! That’s dangerous!

Why is it people disagree with me on this forum all the ruddy time!

I really think I should run for Parliament, it would be a breath of fresh air to Parliament! A new way of looking at the world

Suppose it was only a matter of time before this turned into an argument about why flights are grounded, so i will join in 😀

EGPH you are so far off the mark with your statements its untrue. Imagine for a second being the guy (not that it happens that way) who decided, yea sod it lets open the airspace again. All this fuss about a little cloud in the North. Then, a few planes start falling out of the sky because YOU thought all this was a load of BO**OX. Try living with that?

This is your opinion vs mine. You (and some others) are supposing that if I allowed flights to the South and Southeast to take off a few would crash. There is NO evidence any would run into trouble at all. If one did crash I would do what all people in authority do, not be available for comment!

So I am not saying let’s open the airspace, just flights to the south and southeast.

P.S. Hmm, I wonder if Richard Branson could fly transat via a southerly routing as he doesn’t have to worry bout ETOPS! Hmm maybe a bit risky!

Will NATS pay compensation to the thousands of people whose travel plans have been disrupted?

Use your common sense, the authorities have.
    kev35

Authorities have no common sense they jump to wild conclusions then hide behind their ‘superior knowledge’.

Anyway in the very unlikely event of something strange happening the plane would do what that BA 747 did, as it will have flown into a much smaller ash cloud than the one encountered in Indonesia that day. Planes make great gliders!

The point here being that your opinion, and that of those you have spoken to, is absolutely worthless. You, thankfully, do not have the authority to make such decisions and in this case the decision makers have decided to err on the side of caution. Now, before you say anything EGPH, I openly admit I have little knowledge on how meteorological conditions affect the spread of this ash. I have probably less knowledge on how the ingestion of this ash into a jet engine will affect it other than to destroy it. I am, however, confident that even if your knowledge is greater than mine, it is far below that of those who have access to all the information and have had to make this decision, a decision that wouldn’t have been made lightly.

They have erred on the side of caution, which is just as it should be.

    Regards,

    kev35

Actually if I were in authority to make the decision to open up UK airspace to all departing flights to the south and southeast many air passengers would thank me when their flights landed safely at their destinations!

First of all follow this link, noting the position of Iceland in relation to the UK:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Europe-Iceland.svg

Now I know things change but unless the volcanic ash is actually over the UK, (looks up, sky condition: CAVOK) then there is no reason for ANY plane leaving any British or Irish airport for the south to be grounded, in fact I would go so far as to say all east bound flights to continental Europe should also be allowed to fly, everyone else I have spoken to agrees with me. I think common sense is often better than the people who THINK they know better in Swanwick, Hampshire.

Now when the ash is actually over the UK, then anyone hoping to fly should be grounded!

I really do think this is a massive over-reaction. I have still to hear a good reason why southbound flights are grounded.

Ugh! Talk about making mountains out of molehills, southbound flight should be allowed up, flights that are going transat or to the directly affected regions should be cancelled. If I recall correctly if there is an area near JFK with severe weather they cordon off that area and tell any pilots not going near that area that they are free to fly!

Blimey! I didn’t realise there were any political persuasions on my ballot papers apart from the SNP!

We’ll see how insignificant the SNP are after independance, when 92% of past, present and future oil reserves around the UK are actually in Scottish Territorial Waters!

    1) Scottish independence will never happen, EVER!!

    2) If you know how Britain negotiates, it does so in a very self interested way, territorial waters will be redrawn from international systems to make most of the oil reserves in British waters.
