Well, well, well .. you’ve quite an eye JDK! I’m outed and may as well come clean now. Grommit BTW is not a body-plug 😉
It’s the one on the left
Thanks Andy, I’ll follow up on Terraine. I have Middlebrooks’s BCWD and have read widely on Bomber Command generally, that is why I was surprised by Deighton’s text.
And Yes, Damien – this book is the same one – I found it full of facts I’d never heard before
Len Deighton
An author always noted for his absolute regard for historical( 😉 😉 😉  ) accuracy and never letting the truth get in the way of selling copy.Gnome.
file the book under fiction in your library.
Cheers
Andy
I see … well, it was a good summer read. And Bomber is good fiction too! Thanks guys, apologies for sullying the forum 😉
Gnome,
Tell me.
Is the authors name in a larger font than the title on the front page.
Mark
I don’t know, book’s not in front of me – but I take your point and wondered myself. Is this grandstanding or fact? I have no idea, but was intrigued by the assertion and the implications.
But as I note above, Deighton appears to be quoting the official history. The War Cabinet consisted of Churchill and a handful of selected Ministers; it was a tough bunch (and fair enough given the task). But it struck me as rather callous. That said of course, London was bound to be bombed sooner or later.
I’m with you Dave – heartily sick of seeing P47 .50cals and a V1 exploding for the 500th time 😎
Not bad at all – I especially like esplanade – been there, done that
It’s a strange and wonderful thing alright Gaurav. No one really knows what to expect and it works out different for eveyone too – except for one constant, you start meeting Mums and Dads all over the place and they all understand. It’s a big shift from the no kids life, a very big shift – but very enriching. All the best to both of you.
Steve – I believe the word is “snap”. I find the same thing in the Untied States – all those marvellous Washington and Californian (ie. West Coast) wines, mainly whites, that you more-or-less never find exported. Not at all sure I will make the weekend in AKL, but if I don’t I will post a list of wines you should partake of and/or take with you.
Chris, don’t forget Martinborough and Hawkes Bay … and yes we must (have a beer). I’m back at work from Monday (17th) and not really sure what the next few weeks will bring – give me a few days to see how that settles down and i’ll pm you.
cheers, Don
Thanks Dave for all that. I saw the TV1 news coverage, very interesting – I knew nothing about this before today. Funny (strange) thing though – they (TV1) referred to this incident as the squadron’s “finest hour”. Am I the only one that finds that strange? Their finest hour = their worst? The cause after all was the weather, not the war.
Thank you lads – a very pleasant day it was – fitting for what feels to me like the beginnings of a great year.
Dave I had a couple of fine wines as a matter of fact – perhaps I should have myself repositioned in a vineyard?
As for MoTF and his various visitations – has all the traits of an early onset of dementia to me
Happy birthday old chap. I thought it was only birds who lied about their age?
Not at all Robbo – Gnomes never age, they merely crumble 😉
Thank you Anna dear. 25 again, as usual! 😎
Good argument John – I’m with you. Not that it’ll help a hell of a lot! 😉
I quite agree yak139. There are a number of facets to this debate.
1. Of course “speed kills” but only in the context you, I and others have made … ie. velocity is necessary to injure/kill someone
2. Most accidents are caused by factors other than speed – this has been proven time and again
3. The powers that be struggle to find ways to counter the other causes, alcohol perhaps excepted
4. So they settle for the easy solution – endeavour to reduce speed such that the inevitable crashes occur with less force
5. Therefore they believe speed cameras are a useful deterrent – in point of fact they are just making motorists cynical.
