    English Electric

A story told to me the other week………by a friend from up North.”The story is that a joiner was doing some work at my house in 1999 and saw all my aircraft bits. We got chatting and he told me the story of what he described a ‘front cockpit mockup’ in an underground storage area under the car park of what would have been Handley Page premises during the war. He was doing some work in the car park putting up some security fencing and the drill would only go about 2 inches before it struck some inpenetrable concrete which were old wartime air raid shelters. The nearby site is now GEC Astholm who do lots of locomotive and train signalling stuff. He seems to know what he was on about and described what sounded like a WWII cockpit mockup. He didn’t know if it was Hampden or Halifax but he assured me it wasn’t a jet cockpit.
I phoned him a number of years ago to ask about it and he seemed genuine in what he was telling me.
I think it would be a lot of hard work and messing about to get under the car park, especially as the entrance hatch is now tarmaced over, but don’t let that stop you”It is in the car park next to Slater’s Scuba Diving Centre in Preston, on the corner of Strand Road and Watery Lane. It is in the car park of what used to be HSS tool hire, although that company left the premises a few years back. The entrance has been tarmaced over quite a few years ago, so most people won’t have a clue about it. I did speak to the woman responsible for Oyston Mill who are responsible for the property and explained what I knew about it. I just got the response ‘There isn’t a way under the floor’, basically it wasn’t in her interest to be helpful, so I gave up at that point. I didn’t need a third project to be involved with.

That might not be as far fetched as in seems, that whole area from watery lane to the strand was part of the English Electric factory, And there still is a Scuba Diving centre on watery lane. 😀

    Ladder

Have you tried RAF Coningsby, they have a ladder on one of thier Lightnings I’m sure they would let you copy it.

    tracer

One other thing, if you are on the wrong end of tracer fire would you see the rounds coming at you. It would make the flak gunners job easy if all they had to do was follow the tracer back to the source?.

    synch

Well it’s an interesting question: if they do, is that wrong? Does anyone know the mechanical operating properties of the FN5 turret? Solenoid activation of the firing mechanism? Per gun or linked? etc…

    I suppose that’s what I’m asking in a round about way:D

    tracers

I went to some trouble to ensure they are not in perfect synch as you can see if you look at the picture(s), though presumably each barrel would fire at approximately the same rate?

But if each barrel fired at “approximately” the same rate then they would not come out in perfect synch, looking at the pic the tracer does seem to be coming out of each barrel side by side?

    tracer

Mmm, Are the tracer rounds put in the magazines so they are in perfect synch going in to each barrel to come out side by side as in the pic?, not nit picking but it looks a bit Star Wars to me, I do like it though:D

    stonehenge

The old RFC stations on Salisbury Plain, Larkhill, High Post and Stonehenge. Admittedly only small propeller driven aircraft could fly out of them but what I would give to see an aircraft take off from Stonehenge…!

The RAF wanted to demolish Stonehenge because it interfered with the flying
from one of those nearby stations:D

    As for motorcycles in crates..
This one was stunning, a dealer that didn’t like selling his stock, so when he died and they went into the back of his shop

    I’m drooling over that:eek:

    Lanc

And with the BBMF increasing the number of Spitfires, why would one civil Lanc make them ground PA474??

    To save MONEY

    Two Lancs

I’m not sure that getting Just Jane on to the display scene would be a good thing for PA-474, the bean counters in government might just use it as an excuse to get rid of BBMFs Lanc saying do we realy need two airworthy Lancs
in GB, so if you had to pick which one to keep flying do you go with BBMF or
a private one where the future is unknown? just a thought mind:D
