yes, very usual oh great and righteous ones…
In Distiller’s case, if the cap fits………………… 😉
Hello everyone, from Down Under in sunny Australia!
I’m going to reignite the age-old question: just what is the best fighter of WWII? I’m just wanting to collate different ideas, because I am curious as to what people think on the issue. As for me, I am always going to be loyal to the Spitfire, in particular the Mks. VIII and XIV. I know of many aviation enthusiasts down here who disagree with me, and think that the Mustang was far superior, but I think I agree with Stewart Wilson in his very good book “Spitfire, Mustang and Kittyhawk in Australian Service”, which states that the Mustang and the Spitfire are very similar machines, and thus are very difficult to compare. In addition, I believe the Supermarine aircraft, as an interceptor, was unmatched, and it is for the reason that the interceptors staved off the Luftwaffe that the P-51 ever got the chance to fly in European skies at all, for without the victory of the Battle of Britain by the Hurricane, supported by the Spitfire, there wouldn’t have been any offensive bases for the USAAF and their Mustangs.
Anyway, over to you…is it the Spitfire, the P-51, Bf-109, or maybe something completely different? Hear from you soon…
Being as fair as possible I’d have to make a top ten list and say they are not in any strict order.
Mustang
Spitfire
109
190
Hellcat
Tempest
Yak3
Lightning
Corsair
Zero
Some people will take some out and some people will place them in some sort of order but I think it would be fair to say that all of the above belong in the top 10. I would put the Spit at number 1 purely because it is my favourite but not because I think it was any better than the rest. In some ways it was in others it was lacking a little.
I agree with most of what you say, however, I am not willing to become one country with other countries who have citizens calling our country un-important. I have not said that the French resistance were not important in the war, that is purely an assumption. I have nothing but respect for ALL of those that gave their lives or fought against the Nazi movement, however, there was a large percentage (as no figures are ever correct unless they are on your side) of the French who did join with the Nazis. If the UK had been like that then it is most likely we would not be here, and if we were here then we would all be worshiping Hitler. Sure many fought the Germans, but a HUGE amount of them sided with the Germans. If that in your opinion is being clever/wise then be it, im just glad the British didnt take that stance like many of the French did.
Mindoh. I don’t have any figures but there were a small number British prisoners of war who defected and became members of the SS. Yes they were very few and it is not clear if any of them survived the war. The consensus is that most of the foreign troops such as the French, British etc who did defect, died on the eastern front during or after the war and during the final battle for Berlin. Its a sad and uncomfortable truth but there it is. These idiots were akin to modern football hooligans and many were members of the BUF before the war so they were not much of a loss to us.
I guess you should see a Doctor my dear !!!
About Portuguese food: well I had both food in England and Portugal , and guess what’s my favorite one?
So you’r theory is : France wants to screw up EU and England wants to improve it? Thanks for the good laugh 😮
About the rest of your prose it’s just pathetic …
Hold on Hand he didn’t mention Britain its only polite that you don’t either.
Dis. Are you just being an idiot again? What did the Portugese do to anger you and inccur your wrath? From your description of the country it appears that you are living up to the usual US Imperial attitude towards other countries based purely on cultural stereotypes. None of which are remotely true to real life. Beleive me it doesn’t make you seem clever it makes you look like a prat.
So what do you think of Carlo Kopp as a journalist?
Yup. 242 (Canadian) Sqn RAF. I’m not Canadian though. 🙂
Sorry, but I’m with Flood on this one. I’m immensley proud of my country, which, incidentally, I would describe as Britain, not England (or should I say Ing-ger-land) The xenophobic waving of the English flag by a minority (even with viewing figures of 25 million, that is LESS than 50% of the UK population), whipped up into a form of collective hysteria by the media, makes me almost ashamed to be English (but not British).
The real heros (saying as ‘Spitfire Ace’ aired recently) are people of the like of Peter Brothers, Robert Doe, Geoff Wellum and any number of the 609 pilots that Snapper does a fantastic job reminding us of .
To suggest that young men of lowly IQ and dubious morality kicking a piece of inflated leather between a pair of sticks are somehow ‘heroes’ stretches the definition of the word ‘hero’ to absurd extremes.
I second that motion but i have a proviso. Its better than shooting at each other and making things and people go bang. Thats what the likes of Hugh Dundas, Ginger Lacy et al fought for. So long as we are not trying to bomb the sh1t out of each other perhaps the better ones in these teams could receive a hero staus of sorts. If you see what I mean?
Thanks for the info Phil. Hope they do make a come back. Would love to see a decent combat flight sim on the F-35.
At least they took Rage with them. I tell you what mate it was a crying shame I loved EF2000 it was the very first flight sim I ever bought and ran it on a 486. I reckon the lads who were DID must still be knocking around the industry. Maybe they could re-do EF2000 except without Rage dragging them down. You never know. What sim do you fly nowadays?
Its a cracking sim and I really do like it, unfortunately since FB introduced Spitfires I have neglected it. My last muck about was when the latest patch came out last week but I’d forgotten everything and fired up FB again instead. I will go back to it but only when I’ve a little more time to play with.
Whether England were cheated or not makes no difference – the authorities won’t restage the whole match and England still lost, whatever.
Going around feeling that the referee was incompetant might make you feel better now (without facing up to the situation) but will just harbour ill feeling against referees in general. It is well known amongst football fans that the referee always favours the opposition anyway – whichever side you play on.
99.9% of the whiners here have nothing concrete to moan about except that England lost. Give it a rest: it is over for another year – Nermal
Does that answer my question?
Get over it.
Me?
Of course I do have the Dragon on my bike. I bet that raises an eybrow or two in Birmingham he he.
My British flag flies rain wind or shine all year round or am going to be ‘attacked’ for it?
I’m not saying that Barnowl I am saying that I don’t like being tarred with this brush and they ‘might’ be right about the ref. Just because somebody brings up the possibility doesn’t make it inplausible. I agree with you that Portugal deserved to win and I agree that all this crap that the so called fans do is really beginning to **** me off. I mean surrounding a pub in Thetford because it was full of Portugal fans!!!!!!!!!!!! What was that all about? ******s the lot of them, a shameful bunch of inbreeds who need a good long prison sentence and a damn good kicking. See how they like it. But the ref was crap, he disallowed a perfectly good goal and I don’t want to be accociated with the ****s who cause trouble. Well done Portugal 99.9% of English arn’t they way these pricks make us look and Britain certainly isn’t like that.
Oh right. Just so’s I know.
So maybe you should take a step back and have a look at the whole rotten game.
The lads didn’t win – and yet all that our friendly ‘fans’ here can mostly come up with is that the ref was biased and that we were cheated. Why not just accept that England were not the best team on the pitch – if they were then they would not have had to rely on getting equalisers and penalty shoot-outs, would they.
But that won’t be good enough for you. It will be personal for you, now. You will be fired up by the red-top dailies into believing that Portugal is the big enemy and everytime England plays them it is in the national interest to destroy their international reputation. The way that German was always built up to be the big foe got a young Russian boy stabbed to death in Sussex a few years ago, after England was beaten (again) by the Germans – those ‘true fans’ deciding that it was enough that he had a foreign accent.
Never mind, just a few years to wait to show them it was just a fluke…Flood.â„¢
Flood by and large I agree with you but you are in sore danger of tarring us all with the same brush. Please don’t. Also is it possible that they are right about the ref? Is it possible that England was cheated?
