Seeing the chef just light the fire for the works summer barbeque. Probably not the weather for it, but we’re going to have it anyway…
(P) Funny whining noise in cockpit
(S) Co-pilot removed
There’s additional footage of the Spitfire sequence on YouTube. Will post it when I find it.
Which includes the bit where Clarkson actually realises what he is doing (flying in a Spitfire over southern England!) and seems to get a bit emotional. Probably didn’t make it to the final edit as he drops out of character.
😀
I’ll be dangling by my safety harness from the cherry picker if want to reach anything up there!
I want that paint to stay nice for a while. I keep looking at the three pics of the wing, showing how we started, taped up, and now with the paint on… it just looks so much better. It’ll look really smart once we get the roundels and walkway stencils on, but thats a few weeks off yet.
It’s looking like I’m going to be booking a few holidays at work and heading down Coventry for a few days at a time, if we want her done on schedule. At the present rate, we’re going to get beaten by the weather the way things are going. We got held up massively by the heavy rain a few weeks ago.

Rich
You’ve no idea how happy I was to stumble across that picture! I knew all MR2’s had the white scheme applied from factory.
I’d like to see ‘963 looking exactly like that (turrets and all) but I think its a bit too much for the moment. The paint scheme alone represents a missing poertion of her history though, so I’m happy at that.

Rich
I’m really peeved I haven’t seen this in the air!
It was running up and doing what looked like ground handling and engine checks at Coventry on Saturday, but still hadn’t taken to the air by the time I left.
I had a little poke around it when it was outdoors a couple of weeks ago, and even though its American, and the engines are wrong (they’re air cooled and round :diablo: ) it’s a gorgeous beast.
It’s got to be because its twin tailed. Thats all I can think of.

As promised, some photos. The gremlins have let me play computers for a bit, so here goes!
This is the progress on the starboard wing. After all the taping sealing and prep, it looks rather good don’t you think? There’s a few of us that are going to be watching for anybody scuffing the paint by walking about on there!

We had the rear of the engine nacelle off for painting. It’s not often you see it “in the nude” so we just had to get a picture! It’s amazing to think in the MR3 they managed to stuff a Rolls Royce Viper in there too..

This was the fin after taking the sanding pads to it. As well as the 63, various other slinging marks were also found and assembly stencils.

The next two shots are of the white going on the fins. We were all holding our breath as it was the first large area done, and by roller rather than spray, but it went on great.

In this shot you can see the strips Roger Smith mentioned, along the leading edge. The props look rather good now they’re painted, and will have their yellow tips next week. The rear spinner and radiator shutters got painted too, but the battery failed on the camera before we could get the shot. All four engine cowlings have white bits on now, they’re really progressing well.

And the proof… WR963 in 1957, featured in the excellent book “Avro Shackleton: Avros Maritime Heavyweight by Chris Ashworth”. This is the scheme we’re going for. From the bits we’ve done, and the few good colour photos, she’ll look stunning.

Regards,
Rich
Quality, I really can’t argue. I still have my Dad’s Dinky model Bentley Blower from when he was a kid on my shelf 🙂
There were several Bentleys at the Le Mans Classic this year, but in the corner of the paddock was one Blower Bentley!! It was a beast! The guy driving it wasn’t exactly shy about pushing it on the track either. We watched that grid and he was doing well making sure it was competitive.

Nice… in “Christine” colours too!

I’ll agree with you on that, it is very misrepresented in terms of top end performance… but I still wouldn’t be as harsh as to call it rubbish!
Rumours recently suggests that there may have been a **** up with the brakes; between the size of the caliper pistons and the master cylinder. I’m inclined to agree, as the same sytem was used on the early Mk X Jaguar, but with a slightly larger caliper.
Tell me; yours didn’t have the godawful Moss gearbox in it as well? Double declutching and very leisurely gear changes to avoid crunching noises…
😮

To all those lusting after the Jaguar E-Type Mk1
I’ve owned one. They may look cool but they are a totally rubbish drive.
Moggy
Yours might have been – I doubt every single Series 1 E-type was though? Certainly the ones I’ve been fortunate enough to have a crack in have been great (if not a little cramped in the footwell for me).
