The Truth about this Dig
Hi everyone,
Firstly I have to lay claim to the article placed in the Portsmouth papers on Friday 2nd of December. This project has been on-going for a number of years now and the time seemed right to go public for further information. Several of the people posting against this thread know of me and the project in general. I have found it quite strange that I wasn’t named before this post. I have a personal interest in the Wyvern and some years ago was in talks with a representative of a well known film company regarding a possible dig. This involved various TV companies including the BBC Channel’s 4 and 5 Discovery Channel and National Geographic. All movement stopped as a project because of the downturn in the financial world. Money for new projects dried up so the whole thing was put on Ice for a while. It has been placed in The News now because circumstances have changed and the TV people are once again asking us as a group to proceed further. That first move is to get public interest and hopefully further information. I would like to thank Peter Arnold for his permission to use his photographs in the paper article as the News failed to give him due credit.
As and when I have further news on this article I will of course post it here on the forum.

100 HP Gnome
Hi Andy, at present this will be a facsimile. This will however be driving an original propeller rotated at a slow speed by an electric motor. Weight might also be an issue in it’s construction as it is intended to suspend the replica from the roof of a shopping Mall.

Exhaust stub

The pictures depicting the A6’s were taken on Ark Royal ….check out the AWD tractors. These beasts are still in service today with the FAA….they really belong in museums!
MARTSU MOVE

A few more

Sad Day
Sad news to see that Fred has passed away, he was helping me with a project concerning the Wyvern. Always ready with help in any way he will be sadly missed by all who knew him and more who wish they had.
Fairey Flycatcher
Sad news , I had the honour to meet John Fairey at Lee-on-the-Solent when he displayed the Flycatcher replica. His display which was just before Lee closed was cut short, this was due to a fractured wing strut. I was on his ground crew and he talked to us about this incident in a matter of fact way. Personally looking at the damage done to the aircraft I consider it was mainly due to his skill as a pilot that he got it down without further mishap.
A nice man and one who spent time with his ground crew, much appreciated and sadly missed. Blue skies indeed.
I’ve helped a friend of mine run an old Rover turbine a few times, EX-RN IIRC designed for firefighting duties ? , crank it up, add the hose, hang said hose over the side into water and fight fire with gallons of sea water.
Loud and fun and not that expensive to run either…..
The Rover gas turbine was in fact used as a ‘two man Portable ‘ fire pump but as anyone who has operated this beast will know they were anything but. It may be of interest but the Rover gas turbine was used on the Navy’s 50 Ton Wellington class BH7 hovercraft as an APU and for electrical generation. They carried two for this purpose. The main engine was a marine Proteus.
Completing the lineup
PP5 Sits alongside various Wessex airframes awaiting their turn to help train airframe repair teams and then ending up with the BDR specialists!

Spread at Gosport
The aircraft spread I posted is indeed at Gosport. They all reside within Newcomen Hangar and are used for a variety of training tasks for 764 Initial Training Squadron. All come under the control of The DCAE, The Defence College of Aeronatical Engineering of which the Aircraft Maintenance Section Is but one part.
