Michelf, I think its beyond doubt that I am right that Fort Paull is a historic site. However, while the aviation world has given it its physically largest exhibit, aviation itself is only a relatively small part of what the museum covers. And I really don’t see how they could justify changing the entire feel of the place to satisfy aviation enthusiasts. Doing so would lessen the appeal of the place to, for example, Napoleonic War enthusiasts. They have just as much right to enjoy the place as it should be. It’s a museum of military history through the ages that just happens to have a couple of aircraft at the end of the day. They’ll do what they can to preserve the aircraft for as long as they can, but we really can’t expect them to re-jig the whole place for one exhibit.

As a side, most of the photos in the book Lincoln at war, I have the ORIGINAL photos of.
I may well donate the book and photos to the museum when I go see her.

Oi! Don’t you be giving my book away mate! 😀

Pagen01, don’t worry I’m under no illusions as to the hardships of maintaining a large aircraft outdoors, static or otherwise. You know that! I know the guys will do the best they can for as long as they can.
Michelf, if a viable way forward re getting this and other large airframes under cover could be found that would be great. Even if it steered the organisation involved into choppy waters, ie Cosford and the Cold War building. As far as I’m concerned if it gets a vulnerable aircraft under cover its a good thing. I can’t help but believe currently it’s wishful thinking for the Beverley though, given it’s situation and circumstances.

To be fair I’m not sure I can think of any other viable form of cover that could be constructed to house something the size of 259. And anything built would tower over the existing buildings; believe me the Beverley already does! I would love to see a viable, ‘outside the box’ solution, but I think that 259 will spend the rest of her days outside, fortunately attended to by a group very proud of their very special machine.

the reasons she won’t get cover where she is. firstly I can’t see the owners of the site, the local planning authorities, or indeed the locals wanting a hangar-type structure building in the middle of (and towering over, as it would have to be far higher than) the Napoleonic fort, and secondly it would eat into the already limited ‘arena’ space the museum use for events through the year. I suspect the cost is an issue also. The owners do a good job considering their money pot isn’t exactly vast.

I think it’s fair to say Alertken’s in a minority on a forum populated mostly by persons minded towards aircraft preservation, thankfully. I very much doubt the Bev will ever go under cover at its current location, certainly not unless it’s moved back outside the walls of the fort…
