It’s said that any of us involved in the preservation of anything, be it classic cars, aircraft, antiques, hell anything really, are only ever the guardians of it. I can’t help but think that the people entrusted to be the guardians of this particular piece of history (and I only mean the chiefs, not the ‘guys in the hangar’ who are absolute stars) have made a complete balls-up of this duty and let everyone down. I hope they’re never entrusted with anything with any heritage importance ever again. Not to re-cover old ground, but Waddington really was the last straw for me.
There, spleen vented…
That Shack one’s just horrible… 🙁
Baby steps sir, baby steps! Not aircraft related but I slowly and surely worked up to sneaking a B series engine indoors for fettling. I went to work on the Monday quite smug at this feat and looking forward to returning and working on it in warmth and comfort over the weekend, but when I returned Friday it’d magially sneaked back out all by itself into the yard. Nothing needed be said…:(
Surely there’s enough demand/business on the airshow circuit for 2 Lancs- I mean, of all the requests for the Lanc (or any of their little gems) they must recieve, how many do they find they’re unable for whatever reason to honour, so have to decline? Specially over the Summer months, I’d have thought this must be a problem the BBMF face.
That is a beautiful colour scheme, she looks great.
Happy days, lucky you! I had to make do with a Series Land Rover as my own Lancaster when I was a kid- Well, it had a split windscreen and was as near as I was gonna get!
Sorry Hot_Charlie, never saw your post earlier than mine about demand for appearances by 474 :o.
Just seems to me a really good thing from the point of view that more people get to see a flying Lanc in a typical year, revenue generating never came into my thoughts. If i see the Lanc once a year I’m lucky; anything more’s a bonus.
Did 474 appearing with 558 at Waddington in ’08 not count as formation?
Lucky you, having Two Shacks to play in! I guess they were pretty much stripped out?
Yes Mr. Thomas, very nice chap. So is the general rule if you’re ex-BBMF you can be trusted to fly ‘formation’?
£300,0000 and £300,000 do NOT add up to £650,000 ……….
Nah mate it’s £3,300,000! :p
There’s making mistakes, then there’s dropping a huge, massive elephantine clanger! Waddington was the ‘homecoming’ show for 558 and she was let down by the ‘office boys’ not making sure all the t’s were crossed and the i’s dotted. I saw her at Sunderland, but it only partly made up for the disappointment of not seeing her on home turf. I wonder how much of the fighting fund sending out all the begging letters is taking up anyway…?
Nowt like the book but great film anyway- A-6’s+SPAD’s and many more=:D
Cheers for that, wondered for a while what the rules were
