Tangmere, thanks for that, I’m sure the currator at Middle Wallop will be delighted when I tell her. I did have a suspicion that it was an aerodynamic nose for something as blunt nosed as a mine but needed someone who knew to confirm it.

Apologies for my limited aerodynamics (remembered from the Air Cadets years ago) but surely flying nose down will result in a lower angle of attack (alpha) and therefore less drag.
It will of course result in less lift which could be recoved with more power.

I must dig out the video clip I had at work. Hercules conducting parachute trials at Larkhill range with the Boscombe Harvard doing what it does best – photo chase. Guess what? all you can hear on the video is the Harvard, which wasn’t in shot.
I also remember the time I was inside the Herc cargo hold wearing a headset listening to the intercomm, we were flying out to the range with the Harvard in echelo. As we turned I heard quite clearly…… the Harvard! 😮

Having finally figured out this posting lark can i kickstart this thread back into life by showing you the one photo I have in evidence that Spitfires towed gliders. This shows the towing attachment rather neatly combined with the tailwheel assembly

Here is another whatisit from the bowles of the Museum at Middle Wallop.
Is ir a spinner, It can’t be a radome as its all aluminium, this time there is a serial number 559 41 1d 139B and then something that looks like an angel or a stylised eagle.

This is the item I need to identify. Its only a thought that it might be a butterfly bomb container, but whatever it is it screams air dropped dispensing container, but what and whose is it?

The AEW Wellington gets a mention in the recently published book ‘Air Launched Doodlebugs – The Forgotten campaign.’ by Peter Smith.
Anyone who has Mr Smith’s earlier publication ‘Flying Bombs over the Pennines’ will recognise the subject, only now the attacks on Southampton and London are covered.

There’s a bus stop 50 yards away from the front door of the Museum at Middle Wallop on a Bus route that travels between Salisbury and Andover which both have railway stations. Salisbury is also on the National coach route.

I’d be interested to know if anyone has any information to flesh out my limited amount on two British parachuted weapon systems.
The first was one that was dropped, if only during testing. The Boom Patrol Boat, this was an explosive filled speed boat (copied from an Italian design) for the early Special Boat Squadron that was dropped from a Lancaster B1 special with its crew aboard, a Lt Cox was the first but I understand that Blondie Haslar also had a go. I only have the description of the Lt Cox’s drop in a book along with the grainy photgraphs it contained
The other proposal only got as far as building its parachute, was the airdrop of the Welman one man midget submarine, again with its crew already on board. The parachute for this project was so large that it had to be packed in the road outside the GQ parachutes works in Woking and when packed weighed in at 1000 lb !
This idea must have been from the same deranged mind that had the idea of hanging two Chariot submersibles from a Sunderland.

There isn’t some confusion with the trailing radio aerial here is there?

The Museum at Middle Wallop had the rear fuselage of a Hotspur glider and on the principle of “its a small one nad wouldn’t it be nice to have a complete aircarft” , the museum’s Horsa’s Hadrian and Hamilcar being far from complete due to space consideations, the rest of the airframe was built. On completrion the museum higherarchy was heard to say “I thought you said it was going to be small”.

If no genuine aircraft exist a (good) replica has a place in a museum if only to give an idea of the size. Go to RAF Shawbury and stand in awe in the shadow of the Horsa replica there to get a true idea of this Medium glider’s size. Role on a complete Hamilcar restoration/ replica.

If I told you where I worked I’d then have to kill you. 😉
As to a VC10 I don’t spend all my time looking out of the window!!!
One of the BAC111s has been out to play today though.

Halifax, but only if I could also have a Hamilcar to tow behind it.
