The Malta Aviation Museum bought the wings, engines and undercart of the Connie, all that survived the arson attack, so I guess they’re at Ta’Qali. We were in the bar in October ’88 and when we tried to go again a few days later it was closed, I believe permanently. One of the owners told us the plan was to move it to Ta’Qali which didn’t seem feasible. I suppose he partly got his wish.
There are also the Lascaris War Rooms in, or more accurately under, Valetta. To me they’re only a rumour, every time we went a sign said “Open tomorrow”. We ran out of tomorrows before we found them open.
Very close – Strait Street.
Gharries were still there 20 years ago but that’s the last time I visited. There’s the Maltese equivalent of a gondola called a dgaisa or something like that too.
I suppose all of us have to visit the remains of Gloster Gladiator ‘Faith’ the rest of the museum rates ok, not spectacular.
By far the best and least changed thing is Grand Harbour – Valetta. You can stand there and ‘see’ Ohio (Or OH-ten as some jolly tars called it) struggling into the entrance with a destroyer strapped to each side and a JU87 sticking out of the superstructure.
Over the other end of the island there are traces of Takali, but not a lot.
Most annoying thing? The Teds and the Eyeties bombed the living daylights out of their island, yet the Maltese are just as friendly to them as to we Brits 😡
Moggy
It brings a lump to my throat every time I see the Ohio entering Grand Harbour, usually in The Malta Story.
They’re not all as fond of the Teds and Eyeties as us, they just need their loot. A bookshop owner in Sliema was extremely scathing about the Germans after a bunch of them had left his shop.
A wonderful place, it’s far too long since I’ve been there.
The mkV was fitted to the Hawker Tornado, a close relative of the Typhoon.
But they only built one. Not used on anything else?
Very true, I expected it to be a trunnion that had failed and was surprised when it wasn’t. I tried blaming my sister’s weight as she was with me but since she was about 18 and built like a racing snake that didn’t work.
The other Herald/Vitesse/Spitfire/GT6 malady was the bushes in the remote gear change. They lasted about 5,000 miles if you were lucky. In desperation, one weekend I replaced them with bits of thick reinforced petrol hose. Lasted better than the genuine parts.

Cracking story! Reminds me of my old Mk2 Triumph 2000 that lost a wheel ….
Martin
Must be something about Triumphs. I turned left at a set of traffic lights and the nearside front wheel complete with drum fell off of my Triumph Herald Coupe – the stub axle had snapped. After a lift and tow home at great expense, it was only about a mile, I gloomily started thinking about dismantling the front suspension to fix it. I had a complete saloon which I’d bought for spares so I started looking at that. I was pleased and surprised to find that Herald uprights/stub axles aren’t one piece, the axle is tapered both ends, one for the bearing and the other where it fits into the upright and is retained by a large nut.
Helped by the brilliant access of the tip up front I was back on the road in 15 minutes.

Those I know. 1200 B series again I believe.

I’d never consciously heard of it, I lumped them all in as A50s. In my defence, they made nearly four times as many A50s.
No – oh well it was worth a try.
