I remember the Spitfire and Hurricane being side by side near the gate. Has anybody any idea when they were moved? I’m fairly confident they were still there in late 1973.
Hmmm, yes. That doesn’t work. Spitfire Mk.IX with a Merlin 66 doesn’t fit. Well, it was a thought.
Not that change James. Wasn’t there a previous policy where numbers up to XX were Roman and higher numbers were Arabic. Mosquito B.XVI and B.35 for example.
I have absolutely no idea, but it looks very similar to the standard Windows “courier” font.
I’ve never really thought about it. Certainly the letters were early on and could have been development/prototype engines.
Would the change from Roman to Arabic numerals have been at the same time, or point, that it happened with aircraft mark numbers too?

As James has already mentioned, some marks of the Mossie were pressurised too. With the PR.32 and 34 having service ceilings of over 40,000 feet I imagine they must have been reasonably experienced with valves and control runs.
I mentioned the high altitude Wellington at the end of my post. I think the Mk number was higher than V – VII perhaps.
I’m surprised the capsule experience helped with future projects. I’ve no idea how big it was but compared to a complete fuselage it was obviously much smaller. IIRC, the Wellington capsule had, for want of a better description, a sort of astrodome for the pilot, rather than conventional windows. The Windsor always looked odd too, I wonder if it had the same arrangement.
What had pressurised aircraft had Vickers built? I can only think of the Viscount, which flew almost exactly a year before the Comet.
The Viscount’s cruising ceiling was only roughly half that of the Comet, presumably giving a much lower pressure differential.
I can’t see the capsule in the Windsor or high-altitude Wellington having much relevance to a fully pressurised fuselage.
IIRC, a major contributing factor was all openings were designed to be Redux bonded to the surrounding structure. Due to difficulty in clamping the joint, rivets were added.
This gave areas of high stress around the rivets (and holes) that wouldn’t have occurred if the joints had been correctly bonded. I also believe the application of the Redux left something to be desired.

They always have. I first used a jar (in those days) forty-too-many years ago at the age of about 8 or 9.
I can’t remember now why I thought it was cr@p but I’ve avoided them ever since.

I agree, the engines were not coupled. Each Mamba drove one propellor and couldn’t drive the other. One unit yes, hence Double Mamba as opposed to two singles, but they were totally independent.
