Jet is playing it smart , and i think that going into the future the Bombay-shanghei-san fran route would be very profitable for them as there product is so much better then what the current competition (UA etc) is offering on that route . However i dont understand why they chose BRU as there scissor hub? It is amongst the most expensive airports to work out of , moreover they are routing all there US flights from BRU , whilest there competitor AI is going direct . Now AI only pays for staff and pilots at delhi and EWR whereas jet is having to go through brussels and then keep passengers waiting as the other flights pile in for the scissor operations to work well . Is it worth it ? Can they get extra Revenue just out of the BRU-EWR leg of the operation over and above what they could have gotten from the BOB-EWR ops? Is fifth freedom (rights)going to work for them in this case? I think they have left a gaping hole in there by not going direct , not only would they utelize there fleet better ( no 8 hour stop at BRU) but also fight off competition . In my opinion when IT gets into the game (when they get there aircraft) they can cover the market for direct really well specially with the A340 and A350 aircrafts that it has on offer . As buisness travel to and from BOM,DEL to cities in US is growing and as it is a leisure and tourist traveler might be willing to pay slight premium for non-stop direct flight i see these routes like BOM-EWR/JFK , DEL-EWR/JFK , BOM-ORD , DEL-ORD , BOM-IAD , BLR-EWR etc become very profitable as non-stop very shortly (most allready are) .
Sure by eventually packing in 3-5 fligths into BRU and then grouping them together for Toronto , New york etc they can fill aircraft , but what about when IT comes up and starts offering same routes non-stop? And IT is sure to have a similar if not a better product . Also expect AI to be more competitive with there new product and aircrafts . Jet might be letting go of an opp. to capture a very profitable market !!
The only reason the 9W management has given for selecting BRU is that they didnt get any slots at LHR and they were not keen to operate out of CDG. I think there previous idea of making FRU there EU hub would have been a better choice, as LH already has a good relation with the Indian aviation industry.
AI is not looking at Berlin or Munich as a EU hub while they are also in talks for taking over JAT, again simply for the JAT slots at LHR and using there pilots to fill the gaps.
from what i know IT is planning something like operating direct and indirectly into US. Direct with its A345s that they will get by March next year and indirectly through EU with the A380s which they might get as soon as 2009 instead of 2011.
