I’ve always lived about 12 miles from Birminham (BHX) or Elmdon as it was. More or less right under the approach to one five and pretty close to what is now called the Chase Hold. There have always been aircraft and I have many happy memories of watching BMA Viscounts, Dan-Air Comets, 727’s and the Viscounts and BAC 1-11’s of British Airways. Later there were the BMA DC-9’s and I’ve never forgotten an Austrian DC-8. In the mid 70’s I even had a day trip to Manchester on an HS748.

Now it’s all ERJ’s and ARJ’s, A320 and 321’s, Dash 8’s and 737’s, 757’s and 767’s. Progress? Definitely, but I still miss seeing the aircraft of the 60’s and 70’s.

Oh dear, someone’s got a bit rattled haven’t they? BA won’t be the only ones to cut back staff for those reasons as more and more seats are sold online. It’s common sense really but, as someone else said, it’s unpalatable, especially if it’s your job being cut. As to you being insulting, well, is there really a need for it?

It would be nice if you would get rid of one of the images you use as your signature, such a waste of bandwidth. Janet Jackson having her breast exposed to revive a failed career is not reaaly interesting is it?

Of course it’s a stupid plan. Probably ranks up alongside the Blackpool Vulcan, the A1 Lightning, Duxford’s Shackleton and God knows how many other airframes which are outside, neglected and rotting away. I don’t see a particular problem in hanging an airframe if it ensures its safety. Robbo’s right about the way in which an exhibit is posed. That makes all the difference. I know the purists will say they are badly damaged when they are rigged for hanging, but they’re not as badly damaged as any of the examples I’ve given above.

It boils down to the simple adage ‘you can’t please all of the people all of the time.’ We’re blessed with a wealth of heritage in the UK. They can’t all be in the same place and if you were to try that the Midlands would be the obvious place. I preferred the 262 looking a bit dusty and dowdy at Cosford than in the Milestones of Flight, but I like the Buccaneer at Hendon. The ‘duck’ would have been great if it had continued to fly, but I was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed seeing at Hendon. I like the Liberator at Cosford yet I look forward to seeing it at Hendon. I want to see the Valiant in a well lit space rather than looming over you like some dark cloud against an even darker sky. Change is inevitable, though not always to our taste. The point is these airframes are protected. And barring disasters will still be there in 50 or 100 years time. Unlike so many that are now nothing more than a distant memory.
