One nation, acting unilaterally against the advice and without the support of almost any other nation in the world? A few weeks ago we had this discussion about America being a rogue nation which I didn’t agree with. But aren’t these actions consistent with a rogue nation? Surely the American people can see this is just President Bush’s own personal agenda? You talk about a war on terror, so tell me, how many Irish Republican terrorists have been arrested by America? How many Basque separatists? How man Kashmiris? Have you even charged anyone with the anthrax attack on your own shores? You talk of ridding the world of an evil oppressive regime. Fair enough, but if America’s actions are so altruistic, why didn’t you do anything in Rwanda? or Chechnya?

“Iraq knows this and is going to try and beef up their defenses…..hardened bunkers and such….lol…..what a joke. Everything they have is in bad shape and doesn’t compare to what we have.”

So, knowing American superiority over the Iraqis, why do you consider them such a threat?

Great. You kill him. Then what? You put an American pupp… sorry, representative in charge? You hold democratic elections? Who ensures fair play in the elections? Who would America allow to stand in such an election? Whose law would be observed in the country, American or Islamic? All we hear is the ‘let’s kill Hussein’ rhetoric. Has anyone heard the Americans say what would happen if he is ousted?

Why are you telling me this? I think that’s exactly the point I was getting at in a previous post.

I think you’ll find that was me as well. If, as you said, America knew war was inevitable and that America spent that time preparing for war, how do you explain the Japanese success at Pearl Harbour? Or wasn’t America prepared?

So, America is going to free Iraq? Wonderful! Can you tell me who is going to provide a replacement government? And how will that be decided? And by and on whose authority? Will America maintain a standing army in Iraq to ‘enforce’ a peaceful transition to democracy? What will you do with SH? Send him to Cuba to be held captive with others to whom your great nation denies any kind of human rights? And for how long? Until the rest of the world forgets?

And why this constant tinkering with foreign policy when you are unable to sort out domestic problems? No-one could doubt the courage and determination of the NYPD and NYFD, which was amply and tragically demonstrated on September 11th, so why are they so poorly paid in comparison with others? Why do they have inferior equipment as standard and have to upgrade at their own cost? Do Americans truly believe, and I include members of your government in this, that the lives of their heroes are worth so little?

But look what happened the last time you ‘helped’ the Iraqi’s. That little debacle ended with the slaughter of thousands of Marsh Arabs while the promised American help disappeared. Has it occurred to you that the Iraqi people might just have the attitude of “better the devil we know?”

RE: dead girls found in the UK

Hi all.

It is indeed a very sad day, one can hardly imagine how the parents must feel after 13 days of waiting, hoping against hope that the breakthrough would come, only for it all to end this way.

I think at this time our thoughts should be with the families and all those involved in this case, there will be enough time for recriminations later.

I also think we should remember that no-one has as yet been charged, only arrested on the suspicion of abduction and murder. I think there will be many revelations to come in this case.

Many of us, myself included, wish to express our outrage and anger that such a crime has been committed yet again, however, I don’t think this is the time.

Again, our condolences must go out to the families of Holly and Jessica, and we must just hope that they find comfort in the good wishes of a shocked population.

Perhaps you didn’t realise at school that these people fought and died to give us the freedom to be able to question decisions, to state our opinions freely, or perhaps that freedom only applies to the United States? As for desecrating lives and what they stood for, well, I can’t believe you are so insensitive that you could say that. America does not hold a monopoly on rememberance.

Ah, yes. On the side of a free democratic Iraq with rights for all. Just like after the Gulf war when America encouraged the marsh Arabs to rise, offered them help…. And then sat back while they were slaughtered in their thousands. With friends like that who needs enemies?

So, America regarded Hitler as a threat to Europe in 1938. Can I just thank you now for the speed with which America came to the aid of Europe. December, 1941? Around the 7th? A mere two years, three months and four days after Britain’s entry into the war? You Americans like to kid yourselves that you saved Europe in the second world war. If it weren’t for Britain, the Commonwealth and the Dominions there wouldn’t have been a Europe to save.

The world would probably be a better and safer place without Saddam Hussein, but surely, a country with the armed forces, the technology, the financial wherewithal and the will to oust Hussein could do it without resorting to invasion and the loss of thousands of lives.

Andrew, please grow up a bit. Wombat has said nothing offensive, just asked questions which are topical and may stimulate debate. I would imagine that you being fed up with Wombat would cause him little or no concern.

So, mongu thinks that the republicans should give up any claim to Northern Ireland. I’m personally not that bothered either way as long as the terrorism stops. The IRA have made significant moves towards peace. The decommissioning of weapons may or may not be a token gesture, but do you not find it significant that so-called ‘loyalist’ paramilitaries have not handed any of their weapons over? Or that the majority of recent terrorist incidents in Northern Ireland have been perpetrated by loyalists?
