when will any of the Eurocanards be cleared for maritime strike abilities (if not already?)
from what I’ve heard. None of the Typhoon operators plan to integrate any anti shipping missiles in the near future. The Rafale has none, but will be integrated with Excocet in F3 version (surprised so late). Gripen?

How bout other versions of the Flanker like the Su-30MKI and MKM?

As much as I dislike it, at least the Typhoon programme is in bad shape. The Italians and the British are happy with their backseater position in JSF programme, and Germany/Spain are not that determined either.

As it stands, the JSF camp just wants a cheap Tranche 2+. Some larger external fuel tanks, and the full range of a2g weapons.

The Russians on the other hand got a follow on programme with PAK-FA, from which they can carry over some technology. There is a schedule and systems are selected for development. And they put in the aircraft the best technologies they have at hand.

Now look at the EF. Plenty of wonderful technologies, but absolutely no determination to get them in an operational aircraft. Guess next thing is to cancel Meteor, since AMRAAM D will be integrated into JSF anyway and is most probably comparable in performance.

I thought Germany was really pushing for more integration of technology in the typhoon? seems like Rafale is also experiencing some uninterest from Sarkozy gov’t.

There are so much details about the Su-35BM. You get the entire booklets from the Manufacture itself. And what ever little we know about the J-11B puts the Su-35BM in a completely different league….. There is no comparison…one way or the other…

Officially speaking we know very little about the J-11B

unfortunately there’s two camps of people here, one who’s so sure of the superiority of the Su-35 (and these are usually the same ones who are usually sure of superiority of Russian aircraft in general), and another thats very optimistic of the latest and greatest coming out of China and have a general underlying dislike of anything Russian in general.. despite the fact that there’s not enough factual information (just specs of vague origin and planned claims that are confused as proven claims) on the J-11B to warrant any kind of this is superior to that.

Ceiling for a supersonic aircraft is normally half way between Mach 1 and maximum design Mach number (if we do not consider supersonic optimized aircraft).
The value is rather academical. It tells you more about the propulsion system than about the aircraft.

The ugly truth: The Flanker still carries the weight it got through the early 1970ies specifications of the PVO. Remember that originally the Soviets only wanted to produce the Flanker specification, but MiG came up with the idea of building something smaller and more fitting for front line service.
To carry 8 AAM into a CAP the Flanker is just oversized. At least the second member of the the 16t+ OEW club (other members are F-14 [earlier] and F-22 [much later]).

do you also feel the F-15 is over sized for its role?

on a related note, as perhaps being the only poster in this forum that lives in Japan (and in Okinawa). We see F-4s quite often (for better or worse, usually for the worst).

I managed to get a closer look at one, as well as a display F-104. The ones in Kadena at least, are still painted grey.

Europe end in the East at the Urals. AFAIK the russian capital is west of the Urals. http://www.worldatlas.com/webimage/countrys/europe/europea.htm

Here’s a list of where russian aerospace industry is located. Mostly westy of the Urals.

but some of the really major ones, like NAPO, IAPO, and KnAAPO are east. but I guess in the case of this MiG, its European 🙂

Turkey and Greece are NATO-members with all gains and restrictions from that.
Be it the USA, Britain, France or any other producer of weapons in service there. From the military ties away, both are committed to the EU-institutions and the UN. Just bad behavior sometimes, when pushing the limits for political reasons.
Both had lost their former strategic value for some time alteady.

Greece was just an example.. but lets say Saudi Arabia decided to use the Typhoons in a way in which one of the Eurofighter partner nations has an issue and stops support. will the other partners be able to provide supplies? or will that one or two (or 3) partners that oppose, will have the ability to influence the other partners ability to provide support?

so it is mentioned that buying Typhoon means bigger user base, cooperation, etc because of its larger user base.

Now supposing say.. Greece buys the Typhoon, and then there ends up being some kind of shooting war between Greece and Turkey.. and one of the members (lets just say Britain and Germany), decide to do something that affects supplies and spares.. could the other country (say Italy or Spain) cover all the services themselves?

Nouvelle Calédonie: Nouméa, Koumac, Nandai, la Tontouta, Plum, Koné
    La Réunion: Saint-Denis, Port-des-Galets
PolynĂ©sie francaise: Tahiti Faa’a, Papeete, Taravoa

RIMaP-P is just an abreviation for land forces in French Polynesia – RĂ©giment d’Infanterie de Marine du Pacifique (PolynĂ©sie).

thanks! I’m interested in seeing how people on these islands are affected (positively and negatively) by the French bases. As you know, American bases in Okinawa have had a very negative impact on the locals.

thanks for the detailed info. do you know the name of the main bases they are stationed in? at least for New Caledonia, French Polynesia, and Reunion.

I think the one in French Polynesia is called Rimap?
when I google bases for New Caledonia, I keep getting results about American bases in ww2

For those who believe peak oil will be coming sooner than later, how long can Hawaii’s tourism industry last since more than any other place, is reliant on air transportation? (i don’t think too many people want to take a boat ride there)

    Hi,

Can anyone assist to translate the Japanese text of the news article? I can pick out a few Chinese characters about “DPRK AF military delegation…to China…J-10..”

    Thanks in advance.

It says on the 22nd, a North Korean military delegation made a visit to China’s National Defense Department (there’s probably a better name for this). They came to check out the aircraft for the purpose of possibly buying the new J-10. The picture is model J-10 being assembled at a car plant in Beijing.

The real question is going to be what the knock on effects will be – it has to be remembered that India is increasingly open to other suppliers. In particular, where they previously relied on Russia for pretty much anything complex, they are now buying Israeli missiles (Barak and the new super Barak thing), French/European missiles and in the future, Indian missiles! The Russian bargaining position is weakening with every year that goes by, and the more projects that go wrong, go overbudget, or simply disappoint, the worse it will get. I am hoping that MRCA goes to the Rafale, because it will be a suitable kick up the Russian’s behinds for the way they have been treating India.

perhaps they realize that India will go elsewhere, which is why they’re trying to milk them out of as much money as possible? seems that way with the Chinese too, who are relying more on their own designs as of late, but have been in disagreement lately over the price of the Ilyushins

^ Imust admint, the French alwas made most pretty desings. The EF’s lines seems “ugly and too sober” compared to Rafale. That is why i always loved the Mirage2000. Such a pretty aircraft!

personally.. the 1 seat Rafale is hands down the best looking Eurocanard, but the 2 seater is quite awful. not that the two seater Typhoon looks any better
