Thanks Arthur- you and Geforce are a mine for Dutch history. 🙂
I think that the Duke of Medina was expecting the English to use fireships, and had sent patrol boats out, but what he didn’t expect was the use of large fireships, and a larger number of them as well. Not to mention his undisciplined captains who scattered thinking that the fireships were filled with gunpowder (as had been used on previous occasions).
Thanks Geforce. Makes sense now.
So, Art, when do you officially become a mod?
Tactics like this managed to keep the war affordable for the Republic, and since the city of Amsterdam wasn’t bothered much by the Spaniards the Republic could afford to take it easy in waging the war. As a matter of fact, one of the few large-scale battles between the Spanish and the Republic (Nieuwpoort, 1600) was because the army of the Republic accidentally bumped into the Spanish army. The original mission of the Republic’s army was to go out and destroy a nest of pirates around Dunkirk, which was hampering the trade of the Republic.
I thought the Duke of Parma conquered most of the Netherlands, or he just conquered the major cities? 🙂
Anyone remember the ending of Dumas’ Man in the Iron Mask? D’Artagnan buys the farm while he’s storming a fortress in what I would presume to be Spanish Flanders. Far be it for Dumas to be historically accurate, but was D’Artagnan storming a Spanish held city, or some other place in Holland (non-Spanish held)?
I am of the mind that the Spanish were incompetent sailors. I don’t recall them ever winning any major naval engagement? Yet, despite being poor sailors, they seemed to be decent infantry. Their tercios upheld their military hegemony really until the Duc d’Enghien destroyed them at Rocroi in 1643.
Let me add to that- their sailors and their cavalry were incompetent, but their infantry was disciplined and effective.
They were not incompetent, just, their days were behind them.

You mean the armada invencibile in 1588 or what? I think Tromp fought the English together with de Ruyter in the 1650’s war, not the Spanish. However, it could be that you refer to the occupation of the Dutch of the city of Duinkerke. I doubt that this Armada was bigger than the one in 1588 because it was clear that after the Thirty year war Spain was no longer a superpower which it was under the leadership of Philips II. In fact, it couldn’t even protect the Netherlands anymore from the French. The 1588 action was an act of arrogance towards queen Elizabeth, the latter one was a last attempt of Spain to protect the Netherlands from French occupation. However, the alliances changed like every minutes back then.
Not the 1588 Armada. I think the later one near Duinkerke (Dunkirk?).
It simply didn’t have the money, not even with the overseas possessions.
That’s another item I’m curious about- how much were they expending to maintain their Spanish Netherlands and/or other areas of suzerainty? The amount of silver and gold that they were importing from the New World was considerable, yet not even enough to build warships to protect their treasure fleets. And this wasn’t just in the waning years of the Spanish Empire either.
And why were the Spaniards, for much of the 16th-17th century, incompetent navy-men? Despite building massive men-of-war, always getting their arses handed to them on silver plates?
Sure they had their tercios on land, but nothing capable on the sea.
I have a question for you seafaring pot smoking Dutch pirate guys. 🙂
Does anyone have more info on Admiral Tromp’s annihilation of the Spanish Fleet? I hear that the spanish fleet he defeated was much bigger than the armada that the English trounced.
Unless UMPO are going to build Kaveri’s, of course?
Could be..? Need some Indian specialists to shed some light on this.
Im really curious what the computer specs required for Rome Total War is going to be. Ive seen some screenshots, and the detail is very high in the soldiers. I heard they are developing a special game engine to support that much detail. They are supposed to be making the economic/logistic part of the game more user freindly.
All I know is, I’m going to have to upgrade my video card to get any sort of decent rates.
I would imagine that min. requirements are probably P 2.4, 512 Ram, 128 MB video card or higher.
I was wondering if Brazil could be a possibility in providing the platform?
What would Russia be providing?
I think Russia was ECM or something similar, sorry, don’t remember too well.
Also, anyone know what kind of engine this will be? Hitherto this, I’ve never heard of this company before.
