Anyone on the identity of the L-29?
I think to have seen a Strikemaster in the same grey colours with the same scorpion sign on the tail… Or am I dreaming?

The bases on both are hollow and have clear perspex holding the looms in, the one on the right only has a chopped loom but it is there and the one on the left has a complete loom with the terminals, I made the bases myself too from some spare lumps of mahogany.

    Nice Blenheim yoke……..

Here are my only two, probably quite a common stick top with not very much historical significance but they take a certain pride of place in my collection of bits, the one on the right started me off with collecting aviation stuff and the one on the left was sold to me by Ian Black (the last Lightning pilot) and is totally complete with wiring loom and history.

They certainly ‘look’ American to me but they distinctly lack any military attire, surely if it was an official thing then the people involved would display a military air about them.

Well I must apologise prior to this rant but here goes…..

The RAF roundel was in its first inception red white and blue, is this not what we are celebrating?, no matter weather it is 50, 100 or 150 years it will still be, red white and blue, the history of those colours are intrinsically taught within the service and are instantly recognisable to the public eye, no explanation required.

This change adaption of colours and meaning is nothing but a management excersize and a justification of some ones salary/expenses and is a cost to the tax payer no matter which way you slice it.

A sad mater of fact is that there was some consternation when the Red Arrows changed their logo to what was perceived as a corporate style affair but now is accepted as the norm by the younger generation, much the same as will happen here, tradition, history, remembrance and heritage are being slowly erased in place of being a corporate business, such a crying shame if you ask me.

    Hi there,

As an armchair pilot/runway repair man I would say without any doubt that the entire runway would need re-surfacing in a much better fashion than has been done prior to this incident, that is of course if the airfield wants to operate this type of aircraft again, it certainly was from my point of view very toe curling to watch, firstly the take off roll was indeed very lengthy (but of course that is an illusion of not being able to see the runway in the film), and secondly it was by some sort of fate/miracle that debris did not damage the airframe in a terminal manner, the consequences of which do not bear thinking about.

I wonder if the crew were aware of what was going on either by way of rear view mirror or tower radio traffic, lets not also forget that concords demise was brought about by runway debris puncturing the fuel tanks, one hopes that whatever investigation is done will bring about positive measures to prevent this happening again.

Please not all comments are made without malice or education, just thinking out loud with a sensible head on, the pilots did a sterling job of seeing the take off roll through and getting aloft in the face of deteriorating circumstances.

    Regards,

    John.

    Tony,

Yep will certainly be at cockpitfest along with all my others 🙂

    GYD,

A plug of wood turned to the exact internal dimentions of the swan neck was carefully friction fit internally so that allowed me to put two nice big long screws securely in the base.

Thanks for all your kind comments gents.

    John.

    Evening all,

Been a while since I’ve posted here but I’m proud and happy to share my latest project with you all, I have here a throttle and grip assembly and have mounted it on my own hand made solid oak base, the grip is 100% complete and all the wiring is hidden in the base, there is also a mechanism in the base involving springs hooked up to the brake lever to give it some ‘feel’ when it is pulled….

The swan neck has also been signed by a host of Lighting pilots including Ian Black, George Black, Dennis Brooks, John Ward, Peter New, Ed Durham, Tony Paxton and Alan ‘Porky@ Page….

The road isn’t closed and there is not really any policing of this area on airshow days (they have their hands full with the show itself), if the gathering public caused an obstruction and it was reported then it would be dealt with.

I will say that the camera angle coupled with the ‘ooos’ and ahhhhs’ of the crowd make this clip seem more dangerous than it is, it’s an active airbase and it is airshow day, don’t complain or say things are dangerous when it is you putting yourself in danger!!.

It is similar to standing close to the edge on a train platform, there are no safety barriers or men in yellow jackets to stop us from doing it but its our own in built self control that does, these people clearly have no fear of risk so I say its their fault if anything goes wrong.

Not only that they are at greater risk from cars and lorries passing on the road only inches from them and the kids running about!!!!!!!

Tarnish 6, The Biography of Test Pilot Jimmy Dell

    ISBN 978-1-906183-02-8

Such a true English gentleman and very humble human being, his story takes you through Tiger moths, Havards, Spitfires, Meteors and over to America on F.86’s and others, of course on his return to the UK no one can have experienced as much as him on the development of the British aviation industry.

Lightning, TSR.2, Jaguar and Panavia Tornado flight test programs are all heavily involved in Jimmy’s life and is what shaped our aviation legacy for generations to come, a truly remarkable man.
