I’m currently researching pre-WW2 civil aviation more and more so any moves to more information on it being available would be welcomed by me
A while back myself and David Lee organised a symposium at Cosford under the auspices of BAPC with the title G-DASH… Lots turned up, lots offered wonderful words but absolutely half of foxtrot alpha actually happened!
I’m not sure if I live in a civil aviation archive, or that the archive had taken over our home! There’s LOTS of pre-war civil stuff here, LOADS of Dan-Air, Air Europe and Autair/Court Line – and don’t even start me off about Comet material – someone once DEMANDED that I gave them an original BOAC invite to the first Comet service – they saw it as ‘more relevant that it was in THEIR collection than mine’…
The same thing incidentally happened to the 40-or-so Brabazon 8×10 originals we have here – a ‘certain collection’ DEMANDED that I gave them to them!
And people wonder why I got cynical!
That aside, I’m always happy to help out and share info/pics etc… AS LONG AS PEOPLE BEHAVE IN THE RIGHT MANNER TOWARDS US HERE!
There’s a lot of material in the BA Museum at Heathrow. The late John Stroud had lots of (original) British Airways material – and many other airlines – until after his passing and the collection was broken up and sold to the Smithsonian I gather. I managed to get some of it, and we found ways to incorporate a number of the images into our new Airfield Focus Special on Gatwick. I also managed to get some of his books that – although badly battered and ‘abused’ – are full of additions and revisions if ever he did a second edition!
That night shot looks similar to a whole series of pictures that were taken for (the original) British Airways – I have a number of DH86 Express and other aircraft in more or less the same position – the photographer seemed to like the effect of props spinning in the searchlights!
I’m still trying to get some form of civil aviation archive happening, but am not holding my breath as no-one seems really interested.
it is ex G-AKPA under rebuild by Avspecs in NZ for Gerry Yagen in the USA. To quote Warren Denholm of Avspecs Ltd ‘The Rapide we have here was based in the USA and was found by Mr Yagen stored in a hanger on an airfield that had been absorbed into an industrial estate and lost it’s runway. Jerry bought the project which had not flown for 20 odd years and shipped it down to us for restoration’.
Certainly did….. but it looks as if they managed to get the colours wrong, despite the paint specs I provided them with!
Graham,
Asking price? 😉
I am sure someone on here might be interested, and here at least you could sell to people who aren’t gullible or posessed with macabre tastes…
Sadly, the ToS of this Forum forbid the selling of items here!
Perhaps you would like to see a picture of the aircraft – 43-38172 Lovely Julie – as featured in our latest Focus on Nuthampstead from Malcolm Osborn and myself, out next week! Picture is as supplied by Malcolm.
What gets me is, I have a pair of RR-Merlin engine plates from a Mosquito along with the correct provinence that I am thinking of disposing of – I dont know if I should now having seen all this cr*p!
I’ll dig out my manual
About bloody time!

It looks as though it maybe (name towards the bottom of the page), but the second page it truly dreadful!
As to more details, that depends on The Old Fart!
Additional
The following is from the two-page accident report – the other page is very hard to read.
Cannot find a ‘Liberator’ crash, but I have located a mid-air collision on 19 June 1944, when two 379th BG B-17s collided, one – 44-6133 FR:Y coming down in the Thames estuary, somewhere in the region of Canvey Island and was later salvaged by 86MU while the other, 42-97942 FR:K crashed ‘just east of Southend’ and was destroyed by the ensuing fire.
There’s loads more out there – only everyone wants them for free and are not even prepared to donate a small amount to cover time and materials *shrugs*.
This especially applies to Museums who think they have a god-given right to it all!
To post pictures here within 24 hours of such a tragedy – as happened here – to my mind just cannot be justified by any so-called ‘reason’. The incident happened on 14th November – Photographs were gleefully posted here well within 24 hours – there were at least two pictures on this thread – one showing the so-called ‘last pass’ the other the immediate aftermath. I dont care that they are ‘available elsewhere’… it simply disgusts me that someone even THOUGHT about posting them – we should show more respect to family and friends – and no, I never knew the gentleman concerned.
