Great pictures!
I guess they were getting ready for the show this weekend – I’ll be there if anyone wants to thump me after some of my comments here! See ya’ll sunday – and pray for sunshine!!!
Maybe next year!
and what have you got painted on your B1-7 then?
well just wash that Spitfire ID plate in fresh water….!
Reading some of the comments here, they go a long way to explaining something very strange that happened a few years ago.
The guy who was my editor at the time was contacted by someone who wanted to do some of the Kent airfelds for our Airfield Focus series. He seemed very keen and enthusiastic, so we arranged all we could, and waited for the manuscript(s) to arrive.
We waited… and waited…
We re-contacted… ring ring….. ring ring….”oh yeah… be with you in a few months… I’m having difficulties…” click
We waited…. and waited…
Contacted again… ring ring….. ring ring… “ah… yeah… my house was broken into the other week and they stole the manuscript” Click… burrrrrrrrrr
All very odd – we never did get anything from him, and it got me wondering if there is a Kent Aviation Mafia and I am not paying the right back-hander!
I just could not resist these three from DH Gazette 1937 – I admit to having a soft spot for the ALbatross – one day I’ll do a monograph on it!
Airfields in the UK had posts like that – they were called Rugby Pitches!
When I got time I’ll check my files
Yep… Found the book and checked. There is a chapter called ‘African Tempo”
E-mail me at gmsimons@BTconnect.com and let me know what you want exactly
I know that this is a serious subject with all sorts of allegations made that should be resolved one way or the other…
I wonder though, am I the only one, or do any others find the whole tone of this thread disturbing with more than just a hint of a kangaroo court?
I really do feel that this has reached the point of not being discussed any further here in public
In the spirit of this and and other recent Ebay finds…
Let’s have a competition to see who can come up with the most outrageous (mythical) relic.A sample…
a room service bill from Douglas Bader at a certain Liverpool hotel…
Glenn Miller’s music bag, containing 15 previously unknown tunes and arrangements, along with a toupé
I got a copy around here somewhere – I’ll go digging!
Sadly Hugh passed away a few years ago now – we used to correspond regularly and ‘talk Rapide’ cos he used to fly one out of St Just.
*grins*… that’s the one!
It’s out of print – Brian Cocks may have a copy!
Does this mean there is a good possibility for pleasure flights in the DC3 again in the very near future?
I really hope so!!!
I guess that is down to whether they are commercially viable!
I specifically and deliberately stayed away from looking at the current RAF Museum ‘experience’ from the enthusiasts point of view or that from someone who has been involved with historic aviation since the early 1970’s, trying to view it instead from that of a first time visitor.
The aircraft and equipment on display and available for public viewing at the time of a visit are truly STUNNING. There can be no argument about that. However, that is not all that is noticed.
Without doubt, the piles of items and equipment just left without any real explanation what what happening, the surliness of 90% of the staff, the overall ‘tattiness’ of the Bomber Command Hall in particular, the buckets to collect water-drips in both Bomber Command AND the new Grahame-White building and the complete failure to provide any information regarding the closures – and I searched all over their website and called their ‘information line’ and saw or heard nothing relating to any ‘closures’ I experienced on Saturday last – would have led to me, as a ‘first time visitor’ having a far from satisfactory visitor experience. Even though I had paid nothing, I am sure I would have felt ‘cheated’ in not being allowed to see all that I could have seen.
To this end, I am compiling a report/article that I intend to present to ‘the powers that be’ and would like to call upon the services of the forumites.
Museums in general, and in particular the public-funded ‘Nationals’, have to draw up (and usually publish) a series of documents. These are normally categorised as:
A Strategic Plan (nominally a five year plan)
A Collection Plan
An Exhibit Plan
A Conservation/Preservation Plan
An Archive/Library Plan
A Disaster Plan
I have spent the remainder of the weekend attempting to locate without success ANY of the above-listed documents that relate to the RAF Museum. Does anyone know of them?
