Absolutely magnificent work on the Barra Bill, not to mention the utterly amazing job you’ve done with K7 – just takes restoration to a new level.

If you should be at a loose end any time, there’s a Handley Page Halifax in London…. :dev2:

Although it’s nothing to do with me personally, can I just say what excellent & comprehensive help you’ve given there Don & Jim. It should be noted that that is quite a remarkable tour of operations in terms of the intensity of the losses incurred by Bomber Command at the time and the targets the log includes.

Very odd. Maybe they used a library photo of a ‘bomb-shaped object found at a crash site’ and that isn’t the one disposed of?

Ah, I see the photo is credited to Avon & Somerset Police. I have no idea of their ordnance identifying credentials.

So, are we looking at someone who flew in Europe with Bomber Command and then in the Far East on Liberators or Halifaxes maybe? An Observer who was a Wing Commander?

I knew I’d seen one from an irrefutable source! All colours clearly genuine and untouched. 😀

The plastic P51D would look good on a Pole by the entrance to IWM flying with the Hurricane 🙂

    Good idea.

    Gosh, I remember the Oxford Street shop… didn’t buy a jacket mind….

Glad to see that it’s progressing, the wings looked conspicuously ‘lonely’ the other week.

They could make some room by sending the Halifax cockpit to Elvington… (opens can of worms, runs, takes cover). And a bit more by sending the He162 on loan to Germany. Do we really need two in the south of England?

It wasn’t just the land offensive though. Without raw materials and manufacturing capacity disrupted by sea and air the development and manufacture of even improved conventional weapons became difficult.

Wonder weapons are all very well, and the Hortens are certainly impressive, but you have to develop them, manufacture them (to acceptable tolerances), fuel them, crew them, train the crews…. The Allies had advanced technology too, they were however in a position where it wasn’t about the only card they had left to play.

With the conventional fighters how much impact would reducing their output in favour of new developments have had on the retreat in the East and against the daylight bombing in the West? The ‘what ifs’ are fascinating, but could Germany really have held out, especially in the East, until 1946 in time for any of these projects to have any chance of reaching fruition?

Beermat you are so right, the Warsaw flights would make an excellent film. Sadly it would need to be produced by someone with some talent though and is unlikely to be made as I fear the ending wouldn’t be happy enough for current times…

“My goal with THE MIGHTY EIGHTH is to create a film that not only thrills and entertains the masses, but opens eyes and honors an important part of World War II that has never been portrayed the way it actually was.”

And won’t be this time either…. My goodness that’s so awful it’s an insult – to everyone.

There’s just no excuse, a classic case of just because someone can it really doesn’t mean they should be let loose to.

Isn’t the Hendon 162 missing its seat? (or is it the stick?). It’s probably just me but I’d be happy to see either that or the Duxford one go to Berlin or elsewhere in Germany if they wanted it, two seems a lot in the UK for an as good as non-operational type, interesting though it is.

I’ll add my voice to those happy to see the Typhoon go to Canada on loan. We have such a shared avaiation heritage with ‘The Dominions’, not to mention debt of gratitude, and this is an exhibit which can, and should, be exposed to as many interested parties as possible. For those of us that get the opportunity, albeit only occasionally, to visit musuems abroad we can see some of the unique treasures. I don’t know if the Typhoon will stay in one place in Canada, but it will still not reach everyone there that would wish to see it, but it will reach many who wouldn’t be able to come to Hendon: for that reason it’s absolutely worth it for me. Oh, I’m in the UK lest anyone wonders.

(If we loan it to Beijing/Moscow/Cairo can we have our Stirling back?)
