Okay, against my better judgement I’ll bite… Twenty Three Million pounds really won’t go too far these days. I do love Hendon, despite its faults, but I’d prefer to see the money go on improving what’s already there (or what used to be there) as the money will spread very thinly and please, no more vanity projects. For a start, please can they open up the old galleries again, I want uniforms, medals, dioramas, artifacts. It’s so off-putting going to a musuem with areas roped off, it just yells “we have no money”. Rearrange the exhibits a bit to restore some sense of theme. The Bomber Command Hall, now this IS a crying shame. Since the Valiant left it seems that the top end has just become a dumping ground, gloomy and inaccessible. Please tidy it up. (I won’t start on the Halifax). The non-RAF aircraft. Please, please can we have the 110 and the Ju88 in the Bomber Command Hall where they are REALLY relevant. The He162, the IWM has one, why does Hendon need one too? The two seat Fw190 is so rare it deserves a more prominent display somewhere, but not there. And a decent walkway from the Milestones of Flight to the BC Hall is long overdue. Overall, it’s a difficult one. If you were looking at starting an RAF Museum now it would be a case of “Well, I wouldn’t start from here”. Hendon isn’t an ideal site anymore even if the location in terms of aviation history is. They need to make the best of what is there now. Oh, and I keep missing the Jaguar each time I go… Over 30 years of frontline service, combat history, surely they have one there?

Well, if the spelling is correct, then in England there is:
George Linsey Smith born abt 1890 Wibsey Bradford Yorkshire, living in Horton in the 1891 census (Piece 3641, Folio 134, page 15).
But, matching the information you have there is also a death record for George L Smith birth abt 1903 Death registered June 1964, registration district Kettering (which fits with Oundle) in the deaths index Volume 3b page 491. Worth getting that certificate I would say.

The list is in the recent Merrick book, if no-one else sends it in the meantime I can do it later or tomorrow. The MkI series I, II & III were all in the first HP batches from memory.

If it is wreckage from the Falklands Conflict, could it be from Stanley Airfield? Islander etc? [exposes own pig-ignorance]

Assuming he was actually in the FAA of course:
    From the CWGC:
    SAVILL, JOHN LAWRENCE
    Rank:Leading Airman
    Service No:FAA/FX. 77294
    Date of Death:29/05/1941
    Age:20
    Regiment/Service:Royal Navy H.M.S. Sheffield
    Panel Reference:Bay 2, Panel 2.
    Memorial:LEE-ON-SOLENT MEMORIAL

But that would have been days after the sinking of Bismark, so what would the chances that the event would have been in the Thames/Thames Estuary. Slim I’m assuming, so probably not the right man.

With the full name the search will be a lot easier and there should be a fair amount of information available.

May I respectfully recommend to the house :
The Nuremberg Raid: 30-31 March 1944 by Martin Middlebrook.

An excellent read as always from the amazing Mr Middlebrook.

Agreed completely. Also, The Bombing of Nuremberg by James Campbell is worth a read.

(Although certain people’s memoirs are worth avoiding due to the paucity of detail or even mention)

Indeed, the fighter beacons, the much stronger than forecast winds… these are just some of the unarguable factors. Add in the possibilities that there was political pressure to hit that particular target before switching to support Overlord and various other possible subtexts. RIP the crews lost – Not Forgotten.

Can Johnny Redburn be one of the pilots in this hypothetical dogfight at undetermined altitude/time of day/prevailing conditions? Please.
