She had a re-paint at Duxford soon after she arrived there, at least they did not paint her in the wrong colours and kept the Southend scheme alive.
Unfortunately with the exception of Catalina G-APZA which was broken up at Southend and the odd sea landing from Plane sailing during the airshow I don’t think there is much to write about in the way of seaplane activity post WW2.
A couple of Conair Firecats have landed at Southend Airport on tansit flights, a Cessna Grand Amphibian has also visited, along with smaller Cessna floatplanes.
The onlt seabourne acitivity has been at the airshow or an illegal landing where the pilot parked upon the beach!
I think this is a Sarfend joke – See Planes at Sarfend…. nuffink to do wiv warter…
Just to point out, the research I carried out took many years it’s not just the Seaplanes I have researched I have also researched the history’s of many of the companies that have been based on the airport, the wartime exploits of the airfield (as it was then) the air shows and that’s not just the free seafront shows but also the airport airshows, then there is the aircraft museum.
So to have my work referred to as a “joke” has is quite hurtful, I posted it in the belief people would find it interesting and having got 2,969 views (at time of this posting) and 86 replies (yes it has slightly diverted off subject) it must have been popular with some if you do not want to read about genuine aviation heritage that has been all but forgotten then don’t click on any more that I might post up, as your message about it all being a joke has made me think about not posting anymore of the work up.
One last thing,
I do not know where you are but quite clearly you have not been to Souhend as…
We do not talk Cockney in Southend its Estuary English its more eloquent and softer.
Cheers all
I was born in Rochford Hospital as well! were taking over the world!… or at the the forum!
Stay off subjact in someways, its historic, it includes aircraft “on” the sea…
HMS Vengence was stationed off Southend Pier from the 18th July 1951 until 23rd July 1951 for the Festival of Britain over 15.000 people went on board with the sailers comming ashore via the pier.
Couple of nice shots of here here:

Sea furys?
would love to find out the escort ships with her in the first photo.
I was not even born then!
Have read the story about it though, Everyother airport in the UK was fogged in Southend remained operating until it had to close not because of fog but there was no room left on the airport, aircraft were parked on every bit of space taxiways included!
Hate to think what the Nimbys were doing, probabky much like todays lot, who now go by the name of Stop Airport Expansion Now! (SAEN).
They say the airport will be a 24hour a day freight hub, the railway station that is going up is not a railway station but a gantry crane, frieght will be deliverd by sea to Tilbury docks off loaded from the ship on to an artic lorry driven to Southend and loaded on to either a waiting train or on to a frighter aircraft… ignoring the fact that there are no sidings at the airport and ignoring the fact that there are lots of sidings at Tilbury Docks!
Then its the type of aircraft, noise, pollution, light pollution and so on, they even think if a 727 hits ONE seagull the aircraft will fall out the sky immediately!
The list of “facts” that they spout is endless each one gets more crazy sadly some people beleve what they say.
Many Thanks
Thanks everyone.
It is the Vulcan’s PSP in particular (B2 Vulcan to be exact)
I’m told that it was at the request of ATC. Before it headed to North Weald.
ta, was a rather spectacular pass. just wish I had my camera handy.
What looked like a Hunter over Hanningfield Reservoir about 30 mins ago.
Unfortunately my MKI eyeball aint as good as it used to be, anyone else see it?
A black two seat Hunter made two passes over Southend Airport, the first was down 24 with a pull up and a flight along the seafront she returned a little while later with a fast and low wing waggling pass before pulling up in to a rolling climb before heading north.
Spitfire made a low pass of Southend Airport before heading south over Westcliff.
Four aircraft in close formation just passed South over a dry (dried out after the floods last Saturday!) one looked like a Baron not sure of the other three one was possibly a Spitfire or Hurricane
Basically there were three options put to the council:
1. An intensification of aviation.
2. A non aviation solution based on residential or commercial development.
3. A mixed aviation/development based option.
They went for No3 and will now give residents a say as part of preferred option, no plans have been submitted as to what part could be “opened” for development.
Sorry to hear that, so people would rather have wind turbines than a museum… There are some crazy crazy people out there…
There was a proposal by the local school to me, to erect a wind turbine that would have been 231ft from my bedroom window! what made the proposal worse was that the school is slap bang in the middle of a residential area, with the setting sun going down behind the turbine, the school did arrange a meeting to discuss the planning application before they submitted it but… They only invited parents with kids at the school and not one person living in the roads around the school!
Luckily it was thrown out.
also had the JU52 over Southend.
JU52 @ 800ft over Southend lovely noise it makes.
