What is and isn’t taught in schools in this country is a very contentious subject. As far as I am aware, the Second World War is still covered in the National Curriculum but how do you justify what is taught and what isn’t? Im 21 now so my time in GCSE/A level education is relatively recent and I recall that I was taught a broad range of subjects including the First/Second World War, British Political History, Slave Trade, Industrial Revolution and the Cold War. Only so much can be taught and so where does the balance lie? I would say that rather than excluding the two world wars from the curriculum, it is merely a case of trying to give as broader scope of history as is possible with the limited time available to teach. Its a shame more time couldnt be given over to History but sadly this is unlikely. The best thing to be hoped for is that these tasters of individual episodes in History will stimulate further interest and I would be more concerned with over areas of British history than the Second World War for example which is every much kept in the public eye through films and even computer games, something which the industrial revolution and the slave trade are not!

And you didn’t think this would stir things up a bit?

the only thing it should stir up is polite debate (presumably about the topic of reconcilliation), I would imagine this is how Mr Rhodes intended it. I must say I agree that it would not be the best idea to send the lancaster over to Berlin, however, I find it interesting to note that during 2003, there was a request from Germany for the lanc to fly over the dams (info according to a BBMF guide at Coningsby).

Anyone know what the last aircraft is in post 10. That has to be the most fun looking aircraft I’ve seen in a long while.

Thanks for the pictures Spiteful21. Much appreciated.

Well there was no problem when the BBMF performed the Queen Mothers funeral flypast and two spits accompanied the Lanc.

It’s not unauthetic, Spanish Air Force Casa 2111’s did wear Luftwaffe shemes while in service, whilst making a certain film. So it’s a genuine Spanish Air Force scheme.

I think you know Dave that I meant a genuine luftwaffe scheme rather than the BOB film markings 🙂 Painting this aircraft in it’s Battle of Britain film scheme would be pointless as it is the Imperial WAR Museum as opposed to Imperial FILM Museum 😉 I for one am not against putting the Casa into the colours of a Heinkel but i was interested in what everyone else would think.

Neither of which were owned in full by the IWM. The Hurricane, they part-owned for a while, but ownership has now reverted back to the Shuttleworth Trust. Black 6 was always owned by the MoD, and operated under the auspices of the IWM during its (all too brief 🙁 ) flying career.

Thanks for the clarification. Am I right in saying that it ownership was transferred full to the Shuttleworth Collection after completion of the restoration?

Will they restore the HE111 to static or airworthy condition??

The IWM dont restore aircraft to airworthy condition, i think Black 6 and the Sea Hurricane were special examples. I doubt that the Casa is going anywhere skyward.

Now when the aircraft is all restored in a spurious Luftwaffe scheme, will the same Red Bull bashers etc come to complain about this prospective unauthentic scheme?
