Just a few questions and comments.

WD, what’s your overall impression of MEX? I flew through there (inbound from LAX, cleared customs, then boarded a flight to CUN) about 6 years ago, and I thought it was absolute dump. Not a very nice place to have a 3-hour layover. Nice pics, as usual.

I notice that building in one of the EWR pics has Braniff written on it!

In regards to the pic of MUC, where in the piture is the new Star Alliance terminal?

Its easy for EK to use oil money and cherry-pick far east connections from established airlines

It will be interesting to see what will happen in 25 years when they run out of oil. They better really build up their tourism industry in the meantime.

Remember EK has a very small domestic market and they rely on poaching connecting services from countries that
    have bigger domestic markets… 😡

Well, they are in a good position, hub wise, to feed people from the S. Pacific into Europe. It’s surely one of the options for Greeks (along with TG and SQ) and Cypriots living in Australia to go back home.

never thought a US airline will win airline of the year.

Just goes to show that U.S. airlines aren’t as bad as everyone thinks. 😉 Most of them just aren’t nearly as good as SQ, EK, VS, CX, etc.

That is an absolute brilliant idea! I think TED needs to start doing that. 😀 I’ll be flying them twice in the next 2 weeks.

No, Air Cariabes bought* two A330-200’s from Swiss last year while LX were downsizing their fleet.

Thanks for that Bhoy. Where is Air Caraibes based? I know their turboprops make appearances at SXM.

Going to Greece, you lucky devil! I’ve never been that time of year, but I’m sure it will still be warm. I’ll be there this summer from July 24 till August 24.

Will the 777s have PTVs throughout the plane?

This is a very good question, as I discovered the answer when I flew United to Hawaii back in February. UA’s 2-class 777’s and 763’s do not have the PTV’s in economy, or ‘first’ class, for that matter. These are used for domestic non-hub-to-hub routes only, and I suppose they didn’t feel the need to have the PTV’s in aircraft not used on INTL routes and hub to hub routes (like DEN-ORD, ORD-SFO, etc.). UA’s 3-class 763’s and 777’s do have the PTV’s.

One question that comes to my mind is, were these 777’s ‘retro’fitted for the purpose of serving Hawaii by having the PTV’s removed? To my knowledge, all of UA’s 777’s were delivered in the 3-class configuration, as prior to 9/11, they were only used on the Intl. and hub-to-hub routes. Once the DC-10’s and 747 classics were withdrawn (which coincided with 9/11), 763’s and 777’s were transfered to the Hawaii routes. I’m assuming United had taken delivery of all their 777’s by the end of 2001, as they were the launch customer. Therefore, it is safe to assume that they had to re-arrange the interior of said 777’s and consequently remove PTV’s from them. None of the 767’s at that time, to the best of my knowledge, had the PTV’s so they only had to re-arrange the seating in those. 3-class Intl 763’s had PTV’s installed in them in the last several years, I believe. If anyone can confirm this (Wrenchbender perhaps?) that would be good.

Now does someone know why the center landing gear is not extended?

I believe that was addressed already. With the absence of payload, the decreased weight doesn’t require the use of the centre landing gear. Furthermore, They probably don’t even use the no. 1 engine with that huge thing being more than adequate for left side thrust.

You are correct, I completely overlooked that. They have to have security personnel on duty, however. 😮

I didnt think BA had 762 except the code share aircraft from ill fated US Air tie up.

You could be right. I thought that they had 762’s of their own.

I think BA just have poor mechanics, in general. 😉

Someone mentioned having to use long-haul 767’s in Europe. Don’t BA use the 763 to Athens still (they used to use the 762)? If so, is this considered a long-haul 767 or otherwise?
