Yet wales has no front line fighter or strike squadrons… and RAF Leuchars is about 7 miles from Dundee, and 16 from Glenrothes.

Your right not to trust the Irish! They are just itching to launch an attack!

Im advocating giving Ark Royal because I believe that the Indians would like her.

Less man power to run and ready to go now. Im not saying they dont have good options coming in the pipe line but right now they could use her, she would be great training ship at the least.

India keeps the carrier going because they dont want to lose the skills of the pilots. Somthing we will do. She will be interested in any harriers to keep the pilots in planes and keep them going while they wait.

    yes give them Ark Royal.

India is going to be the biggest arms buyer over the next 10 years and we need to sweeten them up.

If they hadn’t developed their own MBT or were so desperate to have one matcht he west I would say offer them the Chall 2’s we dont need. We give them Ark they buy 100 Challs.

Yes but their airframes and India is deperate for airframes at this time. When was the last time indian harriers engaged an aircraft?

Get them some airframes to keep the carrier with aircraft on board. Give them Ark Royal and see if we can intrest them in something else we want to sell?

Look it has to be the Hawkeye now or what ever is happening by 2020. If the government cant scrap together £300 mill to kit out the POW with proper AEW the fact that it’s CTOL means that using anything else will be a complete waste of its capabilities and I hope to god that they realise this.

I really do hope we dont lose the 1st Carrier after the 2nd comes into the fleet. I really do hope by then we have the money to refit her for CTOL operations!!

Can we just sail the Ark Royal to India now and give her to them along with any harriers we have left. They can use her for the next couple of years in support of the current carrier and then as a commando ship.

I do wonder if India will be allowed to purchase some Harriers now to help keep planes on the deck of Hermes?

I think (as I’ve said before) some (not all) of you guys need to step back from the enthusiast magazines. It’s far too easy to wrap oneself up in the stuff that is peddled by pundits and manufacturers, whilst failing to understand the wider picture of reality and history.

Fundamentally, the issue is whether Britain can defend itself. Clearly, by whatever standards one cares to choose, we are barely capable of defending the UK mainland even as we are. After SDR we will have even less capability. Fox (using the old and dangerously feeble “ten year rule”) claims there is no direct threat to Britain which warrants any major defensive posture. This is of course utter claptrap. Nobody has a clue what lays ahead.

Instead, Fox is going to spin-doctor us into a brave new world in which Britain helps the US to police trouble spots around the world, equipped with our “formidable” force of maybe a dozen serviceable carrier aircraft. He will claim that all of these potential conflicts will be potential threats to Britain but like Afghanistan, only idiots will actually believe this rubbish. In order to conduct these future crusades, any credible means of defending the UK will have been destroyed, presumably for good.

So, let’s hope that Fox’s crystal ball is an accurate one and that no serious threat to the UK emerges either in the short or long term future, given that we will have virtually no ability to do anything about it if it did. On the other hand, our politicians will still be able to proudly strut on the world stage, committing Britain (and people’s lives) to even more conflicts which have the right foreign policy flavour.

Anyone with a few brain cells can see the utter folly of this situation and this is why hardly any MPs are willing to defend the carriers. Everyone knows what a ludicrous concept they are, but Fox (driven by the Navy’s appalling appetite for supremacy) is going to try his best to sell the idea to us this week. It would be funny if it wasn’t so tragic.

See I would love to know where your work has been published, because if you write like this in publication, its a sad thing for the printed word.

The Carriers have been sold to me and great great many others.

    lol – sorry your right.

Type 42 getting ahead of myself.

Yes I would even think about purchasing – £150 mill for 3 – well we’ll offer £130 to be fair.

I would station 2 in Carib and 1 I would send to gib or Cyprus. Then once we decided what we wanted from the C3 if it is to be based on this design plus 10 m I would keep one as a training vessel and sell the others to who ever wanted them.

what ever they do, I really hate seeing these stories. Yes great success, you caught a drug ship! but you used a sledge hammer to crack a nut – well done.

The Type 45 really doing the job it was created for here.

I really would at this stage advocate, leasing the Port of Spain class OPV from BAE, send 2 of them to the Carib to work out of Barbados doing this same role and waiting for Trinidad to comes to it’s senses.

It’s a typical story in european projects. Constantly changing the gaol posts. I dont know when they decided to operate the E-2 off it but then they realised that the deck wasnt long enough. Really 40k aint enough it should have been 55k.

I still think its a great Carrier though with a typical setup of 22 jets plus 2 hawks plus helicopters its the best carrier out there after the CVN classes. I know its not a big field but it aint bad.

Yebbut yebbut that’s an amphibious assault group, not a strike group.

and why i dropped the C and just called it Strike Group, should have put ASG or what ever there instead. Shame on you swerve you knew what I was getting at. 😉

Too look after a CVF? I know CVN might go out with 2 cruisers and 2 burkes and 2 ssn but we just couldnt manage that.

Possibly 2 Type 45 but thats taking a lot of ships out of other pools. I would say that

    1 CVF
    1 45
    1 23
    1 Patrol vessel
    1 SSN
    1 Tanker

Would present a good group. Possibly working with Europe – 1 Air defence frigate from a european navy.
