Relight – The Metheringham Lass – supposed to haunt RAF Metheringham
any sign of the lass recently ???
In theory, A G2 could fly the Valiant (ASW19b) but I never saw it happen, usually G1 or above

Background of the ninth photo is the original wall of the triple bay hangar destroyed during 1940 !!

I think it was G1 for Prefect and Swallow.
The Prefect went out of service early eighties I think. The Swallow lasted to early 1990’s.
Was always amazed how weak the structure looked inside the Prefect whereas the Swallow was like a brick outhouse inside……………..

Replaced by the Swallow eventually………………when did the Prefect actually get taken out of service ??
Hey, Baz V – you flew the T21 at Kenley though……………..

First flight – Cessna 172 from Biggin Hill around 1975 (Age 10)
First Glider Flight – Cadet MK3 from West Malling 1979 (Age 13)
First Power Solo – Venture TMk2 from Syerston 1981 (Age 16)
Great days – I really got the bug big time……………….

I think it’s worth reading the ‘The Thousand Plan’ because it actually gives a more human view of Harris, a professional airman but also family man with a softer side – certainly not a butcher but certainly someone who believed in the justness of what he was doing on behalf of the country and the elected government.
He was also certainly not just going sit around while the Nazi regime bombed Britain at will……………….

Hamsey Green was used for WW2 Air Cadet gliding (which was no way as sophisticated or regimented as the post-war ATC gliding operation. Postwar Kenley was used for Air Cadet gliding (still is).
I believe Hamsey Green was basically a big field with some ridge space at the front. I think it’s now built on.
My source was a conversation with Alex Watson at Kenley 20+ years ago !!!!

Isn’t ‘Snuffy’ Smith meantioned in ‘Tumult in the Clouds’ by James Goodson ??

So was your Dad Charles White ???
BazV – Hullavington ???
I actually like the words which were in the Front of Lancaster at War which Harris wrote the prefix to………. something along the lines of ‘not being a puppet in the Nazi Slave Market – that was the Plan, never forget it it’
Don’t have the book to hand so can’t give the full text – but it was typical Harris
