China Gives Navy Patrol Boats to Cambodia

China gave six navy patrol boats to Cambodia on Thursday to help combat piracy, transnational crime and smuggling in the kingdom’s waters, an official said.

”I would like to thank the Chinese government deeply for this very important grant,” he said in a speech.

”This is a strong and efficient contribution to the operation of the national marine police to fight against all transnational crime, especially drug smuggling, human smuggling and piracy,” he said.

Cambodia’s small and ageing navy engages in occasional spats with Vietnam and Thailand over disputed coastal waters.

Mach 8, 1400km range BrahMos

Mach 8, 1400km range BrahMos

While national media have reported a hypersonic Mach 8 variant of BrahMos to be developed in future, the Western defence media circles are anticipating a sub-sonic or transonic (near the speed of sound) Land Attack Cruise Missile (LACM) variant with an estimated range of 800-km to 1,400-km. In any case a Mach 8 variant of BrahMos will indicate a major technological breakthrough by the Russians in the context of the propulsion components of solid booster and liquid kerosene ramjet engine.

For their part, Indian scientists have for at least a decade, been working on solid-state lasers for use as super-high-speed ignition systems to arm missiles, although their present status is a closely guarded secret

A Mach 8 passive radiation homing BrahMos-2 if developed, will fulfil an Indian Navy requirement of a formidable Suppression of Enemy Air Defence (SEAD) LACM and also pose a deadly threat to enemy warships sporting elaborate air defence radar systems like the “AEGIS type” vessels under construction for the Chinese People Liberation Army Navy (PLAN).

India ready to test new cryogenic upper-stage engine

India ready to test new cryogenic upper-stage engine

Preparations are under way for the first ground test of the Indian-designed restartable cryogenic upper-stage engine for the Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV), writes Radhakrishna Rao.

The indigenous liquid-oxygen/liquid-hydrogen engine will increase the payload of the GSLV from 2,000kg (4,400lb) to 2,500kg to geosynchronous transfer orbit.

The cryogenic engine, which has logged more than 7,000s of accumulated rig test time, will replace the Russian-supplied upper stage of the 414t, three-stage GSLV.

Integration of the Indian engine with the GSLV is under way and a successful ground test will be followed by a flight of the vehicle, says B N Suresh, director of the Indian Space Research Organisation’s Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre.

SURYA

SURYA – 1 & 2 : INDIA’s ICBM’s :diablo:

Surya-1/2

Country: India
Class: ICBM
Basing: Surface based
Length: 40.00 m
Launch Weight: 80 kg
Propulsion: First/second stage solid, third liquid
Range: 8,000, 12,000 km
Status: Development
In Service: Exp. 2008

Details

The Surya is an intercontinental-range, surface-based, solid- and liquid-propellant ballistic missile. Currently in development, the missile is based on the civil space launch technologies of the PSLV/GSLV programs. Once completed, it will be India’s first ICBM.

A strategic weapon, the Surya will extend India’s nuclear deterrent to targets deep within China. At present, Indian missiles can only hit a limited number of Chinese targets, even after the completion of the Agni-3. However, the development of a true ICBM such as the Surya will make almost any strategic target within China vulnerable, and decrease India’s relative weakness. In this manner, the Surya will provide India with a strong deterrent against future Chinese aggression.

At present, India is developing two variants, the Surya-1 and the Surya-2. The Surya-1 is reported to be 40 m long and weigh 80,000 kg. It is expected to have a range of 8,000 km (4,971 miles). The missile is believed to use a three-stage design, with one liquid-propellant and two solid-propellant stages. As the Surya-1 has yet to be developed, its payload and warhead are currently unknown. The Surya-2 will have a longer range of 12,000 km (7,456 miles), which will most likely be accomplished by decreasing its payload.

The first test flight of the Surya-1 is expected in 2005 and the missile is expected to enter service in 2008 🙂 🙂

IMO the Surya will be a PSLV or ASLV with a re-entry system :

Is China building a carrier?

By Yihong Chang JDW Correspondent &
Andrew Koch JDW Bureau Chief
Hong Kong & Washington, DC

Chinese shipyard workers have been repairing a badly damaged ex-Russian aircraft carrier and have repainted it with the country’s military markings, raising the question once again of whether China is pursuing longer-term plans to field its first carrier.

In the latest developments, images show that workers at the Chinese Dalian Shipyard have repainted the ex-Russian Kuznetsov-class aircraft carrier Varyag with the markings and colour scheme of the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) Navy (PLAN). Additional new photographs show that other work, the specifics of which could not be determined, appears to be continuing and that the condition of the vessel is being improved.

JDW believes that PLAN technicians have also conducted thorough studies of the basic structure of the Varyag during the past few years to obtain a comprehensive understanding of the carrier’s structural design. Former PLAN commander General Liu Huaqing stated in his memoirs that China had purchased blueprints for the carrier – a fact that Russian sources confirmed to JDW. Moreover, Gen Huaqing added: “The competent departments of the defence industry employed Russian aircraft carrier designers to come to China and give lectures.”

Still, China’s ultimate intentions for the Varyag remain unclear. One possibility is that Beijing intends to eventually have it enter into some level of service. A military strategist from a Chinese military university has commented publicly that the Varyag “would be China’s first aircraft carrier”.

‘Design an airplane that can compete with giants’: Prez

August 05, 2005 21:27 IST

President A P J Adbul Kalam on Friday asked scientists to design and develop a Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) which could compete with world giants.

“We have to develop aircraft which can compete with European, American and Russian aircraft,” he said while addressing scientists at the Research Centre Imarat (RCI) after inaugurating Hardware-in-loop Simulation (HILS), an essential facility required for missile development in Hyderabad.

“Though we were denied the technology, our scientists took it as a challenge and developed LCA and on February 10, this year, 3 LCA `Tejas’ flew as part of Aero India 2005 after logging 187 flight hours,” he said.

“We still have to work towards flying our aircraft with European, American and Russian fighters in Paris and other air shows in different parts of the world,” the President added.

LCA should be inducted into the service squadron for operational purpose, Kalam told the scientists and narrated the hurdles the scientists faced to bring out the LCA.

I dont understand him…does he want another LCA class airplane or is he speaking of the MCA…or is he praising the LCA.

I ahve heard about TVC being offered to india on M2 but not sure. or maybe its just my wishfull thinking

a pic of a Mig-29OVT with 3D TVC
http://img77.exs.cx/img77/7134/mig29ovtnozzles8il.jpg

….. but it although the Indian Mig offer including that is in question, i would’nt be surprised if that comes through.

It seems to be in development…..i rember reading in an interview in an Indian Express suppliment on Indian aviation during Aero India that the Mig company’s chief (chief of Sukhoi as well) whose name i have forgotten saying that when this development is finished, it will be possible to upgrade the Mig-29’s to have this 3D TVC from the mig-29 OVT (and this provision will be made in the contract), going the extra mile to press fot the Mig-29 in the MRCA tender.

Do you have any links confirming that India has agreed. I have been looking for this news for a long time now.

No the deal has not been sealed…the government dont seem interested at all … so it was proposed to the Prez Kalam during his recent Russia visit and he gave out all the optimistic signals…

and this is the most optimistic news report that i have seen :

Moscow | May 24, 2005 1:42:45 PM IST

Moscow, May 24 : Indian President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Monday discussed with Russian officials the possibility of a collaboration in the production of fifth generation Sukhoi fighter aircraft and in the design and manufacture of a civilian aircraft.

Kalam discussed the matter with officials at the Sukhoi Design Bureau when he visited the facility on the outskirts of the city.

The model of collaboration, according to officials, would be the same as the one followed in the joint venture BrahMos missile project between India and Russia.

“Both sides will bring in their core competencies, technology and, of course, money,” a senior Indian official said.

The official said that after the discussions at the Sukhoi Design Bureau, the matter is expected to figure during Kalam’s meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin Tuesday.

The President had a one-hour engagement at the Sukhoi Design Bureau. Talking to the newsmen there, he said, “I was talking to the designers of Sukhoi that the best of the cooperation between the two countries is yet to come”.
