Superb festive read – thank you for posting
Thank you! Much appreciated
Apologies if I am being dense Team (I am most of the time!). I’m just confused reading this thread. It appears we are taking about various p38 restorations.
Can someone clarify if there is one in the UK at the moment?
Graham,
JN772 is off Dungeness, or to be more exact :-
“HSL178 sighted an aircraft crashing into sea, position 110 degrees Dungeness 2 miles and recovered pilot uninjured. 22:10.
AIR29/445″In essence everything that went into the Channel is still there in some form or other.
In the same way that all other crashes on land, even those recovered at the time, have left fragments on the surface they struck even if it is just paint flakes.
What pieces that are left on land and underwater is what was not recovered at the time/later and are being reduced to elements by chemical corrosion/reaction.
For the more intact underwater and shoreline wreck to survive to present day requires a multitude of conditions to occur together and these usually only occur in a few localised areas off the UK coast.
The better question is what could still survive in x and y areas.
As an example look at the preservation state of fabric label on the Snorkel Parka from the Liberator, compared to the metal, in this special area of the Channel.

Ross
Hi Ross,
Thank you for your post very interesting and informative!
Wondy
It would be brilliant if the UK acquired a genuine BF109E that fought in the Battle of Britain. Just in time for the 75th anniversary next year. There are not many veterans left from 1940 now either, so to get 3 genuine participant fighters together would be very poignant indeed. Hurricane R4118, Spitfire P7350 and Bf109E 3579 would certainly draw in the crowds at the airshows.
THAT would be something to see!
Well done Colin to you and all involved regarding the sponsorship money raised and to the team that make this Air Show happen. A truly cracking show which Is pretty much seen now as the commencement of the display season
Thank you for posting.
Amazing stuff
I hope the Airfield is preserved in its current state to educate the future generations and remember those of the past
Thank you for the update Chris.
