How can one claim that LCA is on course, when they have not even decided on an engine for Mk.2.
Before 2015, when the report suggests that they have not even made a final decision on the replacement engine.
Regarding the handling, it can easily be that the aircraft has too much drag, so it accelerates slowly and/or loses a lot of energy in a hard turn, which then takes “too long” to regain.
If it is not the case, why would the RAF be so desperate ot get out of Tranche 3 and sell the Tranche 1 aircraft?
Why does the German EF fleet have w worse readniness record then the old F-4F and Tornados?
Why does aa EF cost 80 mil $ while the US Navy can get a SH for 48$ ?
Why did every published report in recent competitions put the EF behind Rafale and or F-15?
A stealthy jammer is a little senseless. When you put out energy like a Growler, you are not stealthy anyway.
Main difference is that China did not try 2 steps at a time. They used an tested engine for the new fighter and put home built engines into old fighters. Just now they are about to merge the indigenous airframe and engine.
However a failure in either project was never in danger of killing the whole indigenous project.
Exactly. Typhoon is obsolete and a dead end in development.
Rafale is far superior, as is F-15K, MiG-35, everything above SU-30, F-35, F-22.
The Typhoon in unreliable, expensive to buy and operate, has a legacy radar system, lacks range and AG capability.
Look at the RAF, they would love to trade in their Typhoons for half the number of F-35.
Most likely not.
I think they started with an ok design. After some time they added weight for various reasons, because Kaveri was to be better then F404. However Kaveri is a really failed project.
If they now decide on F414 and stick to it, then LCA has a cahnce. If they again use F414 as a stop-gap until a non existent improved Kaveri engine will reaplce it, then LCA is dead.
SH all the way.
Cheap, ready developed with AESA, Growler option.
EF
expensive, even the partner nations want to get rid of it, no AESA, not fully AG capable
To make a point clear, the LCA program was started in 1983, ADA was formed in 1984, so 1984 cna be consdered the latest starting year for the aircratft program.
Otherwise Rafale started in 1986-1988, grippen 1984-1986, and EF Typhoon 1986.
A400M has no counter rotating props
The main problem is the Kaveri engine. It is impossible to design a plane for an engine that does not exist, but is always expected to be better then the one you currently have available.
If India would now sign up a deal for F414 and decide that this is the engine of LCA, then maybe it can be saved.
The best thing imho is to skip the idea that LCA will become a first line fighter aircraft, so keep the F404 and make it an armed advanced trainer, more in line with the Korean A-50 then with J-10, Grippen or even EF or Super Bug.
And there is nothing wrong with such a light CAS plane either.
Amen to that.
The LCA is intended to replace the non Bison Mig 21s and the retired Mig 23s. When it reaches maturity it may replace the 130 odd upgraded Bisons as well.
The LCA was intended to be produced in much higher numbers, now the MRCA are going to fill some of the numbers initially envisaged for the LCA.
How could it replace types that will be withdrawn for over a decade when it reaches operational service. And even a basic JAS 39 A is more advanced then LCA in its current form.
Seahawk,
Disagree. The cost of an LHD that could operate a CVF-max airgroup at a practical optempo and still be configured to be a worthwhile amphibious unit would be at least equal to what we are paying for CVF. If we didnt have the Albions perhaps it might make sense, but, we do have them.
In theory I would agree with you, in reality however I think given a set budget it makes sense to built a ship that can be used in as many roles as possible, even if is perfect for none of those roles.
Since the Falklands the UK never needed a fully fledged aircraft carrier. However I would agree that HMS Ocean was a full success and has found many missions since it was put into service.
Funny, the USMC is the premier expeditionary force in the world. Yet, it operates a small number of Attack Helocopters (i.e. Sea Corbas). Compared to a large fleet of Harriers!
hmmmm
And they are even tooting APG-65 and AMRAAM in most cases.
In general I think the USMC could be a good role model for the RN. Larger amphibs that can be used as carriers for fighters and helicopters and/or troops and equipment.
2x such amphibs which could carry up to 30 F-35B each in CVF use would make more sense then the larger pure CVFs.
