RAF Hullavington
Ive seen photos from 1947 of hundreds of aircraft, predomenantly Lancs a Stirlings, being broke up at Hullavington, the fields around there when ploughed are full of small pieces, I have a 2ft x 1ft box full of parts found on the old scrapping ground
and also RAF Colerne, which broke up lots of spitfires, mostly those returning from the european theatre of war , 39MU i think were one of the units involved,
in the 1970s-80s a telephone line was put in a trench across the airfield,
and the telephone engineers came across a huge amount of spitfire U/C legs,
which ended up in Flowers scrap yard ,chippenham, and i believe most were bought by mr D.Arnold when the yard closed down,
there are many others of course, but these are the only 2 i have made a good study of,
hope this helps
Wasn’t there a Cessna 150 cockpit advertised on the ICC forum for a mere fifty quid ?
Pretty sure it didn’t find a buyer………
.
Might have to chase that one up ,Not really my cup of tea, as i prefer the 1950s-60s models, ,just got the call back with the price for the Colt, its more complete than i thought, Whole aircraft ,Minus engine and undercarraige,
Good price too for a whole one , But considering I only am after a fuselage, all be it half of one, then i will have to pass on it , Howevor in wrecks and relics,
there is another fuselage of one in derbyshire, Dumped by the look of it, It was damaged in storms, I wonder if this one is up for grabs??
tipsy
cor i never knew what a tipsy belfair looked like, !!, just seen some pics on web ,it looks really something specail !!,
my favourite types are the,BA Swallow, Miles ,Hawks etc, even though its military the Magister too,
theres something about those pre war Monoplanes that is very appealing :D.
quite rare these days too I should imagine ! 😀
Tumbleweed
Yes Merlin, I did think hard before i put this little note on the general aviation forum !,
and yes i do somewhat feel a tad embarressed,:o.
But things have changed for me, I used to spend nearly every hour researching “Lost aircraft” etc etc, visiting farms, eyewitnesses ,so on and so forth,
I lived and breathed aviation ,or more i should say “Military ” aviation since the age of 14, it isnt something that easy to shake off,
My Hobbies are Varied now, and i do not “Live and breath ” aviation,, there are more important things in life, Like family and work,
hence to sayi was after a cheep project on a MUCH smaller scale, I did bite off more than i could chew with the Canberra, But that has all worked out well for her future !,
I am as people could say a very busy man , the other reason for a cockpit is i still DO like my flight sims, and i will incorperate this in a Modest way into a old civvy cockpit, whatever I wish to do, that is up to me, and as for tumbleweed, well I still think this is a free country , so if i decide to do a bit of aviation ,all be it from a different angle than ive done before, well so be it ,:diablo:
if you knew anything about me, you would realise this is a totally new angle for me, as “Military aviation” is all ive bothered with in the past, and yet we have such a rich history in civil aviation,
I imagine also most of ,if not nearly all of the “Historic” forum is mainly fond of Military aviation,so I hope to meet people into a different aspect of aviation than what I have been used too for the past 20 years ,
This has already been discussed on ‘Historic’, but to repeat, you may wish to contact this vendor who has many such things, including Tomahawk, Cherokee 140/180/warrior/archer, Cessna 150/152/172, Mooney m20, Aztec, Seneca, Navajo Cessna 310, Piper Colt, Various Rallyes TB9/10/20, Robinson R22& R44, & Grumman AA5 to name a few.
.
Thanks XM692 ,
ahh yes Nayman aero or something like that, did give him a try, just awaiting a price on a colt ,1964 ish,
which is one i am keen on,I would just like to say, the reason i am after one is I am sure its a darn site smaller than a canberra, and I do like the old 1950s- 60s aircraft ,the only thing that puts me off is the Lycoming engine, Prefer a inline or radial anyday, but the early Bonanza’s Ryans ,and colts do look nice , and i imagine being not as sought after as military birds, quite cheep and easy to aquire, saying that i could be wrong about that one,
Thanks again
Chris C
Interesting project, would certainly give a new twist on the cockpit days at Newark!
I wonder if anyone we know might have the parts to do such a project,
I will certainly keep my eye open in the future, for such a oportunity,
saying that , I am restoring , 1 lambretta , and 3 pre war stationary engines ,
so my hands are a little full at the moment , but given half a chance 🙂
would you have to run it with the cowl off?
cowl on i am guessing, ?? as to Funnel the air past the cylinders ??
🙂
FW190- I guess my only concern would be the balance of the prop after it’s been chopped about.
I agree with that one, it has to be balanced, It would shake itself to bits, and probably kill someone, 😮
But then these engines arent designed to run without a prop, same as a flywheel on a stationary engine, it needs a balanced weight to turn,
hence why all the engine gang with the merlins etc have props fitted, didnt one of the merlins have a ww1 type 4 bladed cut down prop fitted a few years ago,
I know i am teaching to suck eggs (sorry) truth is those of you who run engines etc, know all this in much better detail than i ever would,
but i imagine a prop of some type is needed to run proper,???
ahh correct, i didnt think of that, i imagine just the tips cut would not hurt,
aslong as air could circulate around the cylinders, through the air scoop,
i allways wondered how these Merlin engines, and in perticular the radials that run at shows manage to keep cool, just keep your eyes on the gauges i suppose, oil pressure and engine temp, etc, and keep the revs down,
i notice nearly all, if not all ground running engine set ups have cut down props ,
must be a very careful balancing act ,
you got to admit though it would look good at a show, i expect a old out of hours Gypsy is quite expensive, as you dont see them all that often, being most of them are in Flyers,
MMMmm, the more i think of it the more fun it becomes, it would only be from the front cockpit window to the spinner on the engine ,that way its size would be managable, and i imagine its weight would not be very heavy, the most being the engine, which in itself is heavy , but still not alot of wieght for a engine,
Nice cut down prop, and the public could see the dials spin into life too,
ahh well, it would look good, and our local history had the skies years ago with frequent flights from the Bristol University Air Sqn flying over and doing the odd stunt, including 2 of there aircraft crashing (no fatalities) about 3 miles from my house.
I have a wonderful picture in my mind of you ‘flying’ the trailer to a cockpit meet under its own power 😀
Moggy
LOL, Yes AAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGG WHERES THE BRAKES, !!
:p
Gliders, etc small cockpit/engine displays
I just wanted to pose a question ,
Due to the size of 887 and storage problems ,and to secure her future I had to let 887 go to a good home, Howevor, anything that is much smaller Ie , a old glider cockpit or chippie, I could just about manage,
do old gliders ever take anyones fancy ??, like slingsbys etc, cockpit wise, I see Naylons done a sterling job on a T21 at doncaster, and wondered are these a rare, or even vintage civilian types from the early post war years,
do these types EVER come up for trade ??
and just a Idea for someone with a “Small” cockpit, like a chippie, has anyone “EVER” finished a cockpit, and mounted a restored engine on the cockpit , on a trailer, I would imagine something like a chippie with a running Gypsy engine ,which in effect would bring it to life, would look and sound quite impressive ,
Not that i would do such a thing, But wondered if it had allready bee done ???
Colour scheme for 887
Just wondered Matt,
Will you be keeping her in her FRADU colours, or back to Bomber status,
I bet you’ve bought the Corgi Model of her 😀
I hope you’ve got a good start with the instruments ,i was’nt sure just what was there that you could use, I just hope Most of the cockpit parts i supplied were of use to you,
If i see any more bits a bobs i will PM you, 😉
Well theres a surprise, after all those posts saying it was to be dug. All those arguments about selling shares in a dig opportunity, you yet again fold. Do you ever stick at anything. This is not a dig or Merkle bashing as you have put it, but you do seem to go on quite a bit, and all you say you are doing never comes off. So IMHO stop broadcasting to the world everything you say you are doing, as nothing you do ever comes of it.
as others have said, I needed to talk about it first !!, and my enthsiasm was Very strong, for over 20 years, and i have done Much over those years, but i cannot help the way i feel, like i said i sat in the kitchen a month or so ago, and it dawned on me that my whole outlook had changed, HONESTLY i HAVE been involved in this stuff since a teen, now i am 36, I guess the forever searching etc ,over 20 odd years with no real finds as such for what ever reason just burnt me out, and was affecting my family, the whole idea for the meatbox was for part of the westonzoyland project ,which to be honest was NOT my idea at all, i was working on par for a friend,so what is the point of me digging a plane that parts could be in good condition ,only for them to rot and not go on show, Just to please the aviation comunity,i would rather it come out when a museum could take these parts ,
I am sorry about it , Perhaps i am a failure as you basicly put it, but then again I wish i was perfect like you, and your projects,I only wish I had the Money and Storage/workshops as you do, then i may have been in a realistic position to do something, all i ever really wanted personally was a engine, that could run, But yet again dreaming !, it wont happen ,so i am better off out of it, at least a old motorcycle ,or stationary engine is small and mainly Storable and affordable, Hence why i have given up on the aircraft side of things, who knows maybe one day i will bu a chippie project, as its small enough to manage,
all I can say is at least I have tried, which is more than most 🙁

No the recovery has not happened yet, it was planned for july, but due to HSE reasons it was postponed and never carried out,
then there are issues with the farmer, he wants paying in one way or another,
i suppose if someone asked you to dig a 15 foot hole in your garden you would unlikely do it without some sort of compensation,
then there is the fact my interest has wained in all of this due to the politics, cash and storage, and not knowing what is happening with westonzoyland,
licence runs out soon, so it will either be dug, OR it will lapse and it an become someone elses project,
