a couple more of kemble
heres a couple more of Kemble, Not exactly the same qaulity as the best cameras, but my first attemp, Gutted, now i am going to have to buy a proper camera, the aviation photo bug is very addictive 😀
Like i said before , they were taken with a £150 Digi camera.:o
kemble Novice camera work
JUst one of my pics, will post more again later,
Please bare in mind, this was only with a cheep ASDA camera, and for such a cheep cam, I wondered what you thought,
I will put a few more on tonight 😉
Looking back on manufacturing processes during the war and metalurgy that the British had during the war.Would todays metals and processes be equilivent if you changed the technique used. With the Spit there are a considerable amount of forgings used on a the larger structures, pintles, landing leg locks etc and was wondering if newer metals used in castings or from being milled out of a solid lump being just as strong,if not stronger.Just looking for options at the moment for our project.
castings are a tricky business, especailly aluminium, all sorts of probllems can arise, from porsity, cold Lap, Lamiler indications, Heat sinking,
it would be better to get it milled out of new stock, but i would say it certainly would want Ultrasnic NDT before and after the item is made, also a flourescent DPI test,;)
You’ve not been to see what the Dunkeswell museum has achieved then ?
.
no i havent, was told years ago there was a U/C leg from a liby there, thats about all i know about Dunks !
Must pay a visit if its a good little museum, 🙂
I think you’re really missing out on an opportunity here. Do you realise Matt that Weston Zoyland is only 18 miles from the Fleet Air Arm Museum at Yeovilton? With the best will in the world there is absolutely no way in which you can compete with what is one of this Country’s greatest aviation Museums. In fact I’d probably rate it above the RAFM at Hendon as they stand now.
What you do have is the opportunity to create a superb little Museum focussing on Weston Zoyland and the units operating from there. Maybe something along the lines of the 100th BG Museum at Thorpe Abbotts. By focussing on the activities of those who served there a really useful and interesting Museum could be created. It wouldn’t take up too much room and it would be manageable. I think that being able to manage this as a sustainable project is one of the things you need to seriously consider. I think you need to learn to walk before you start trying to run.
One thing you have going for you is your enthusiasm. But temper it with some common sense. Start very small and slowly. You seem to misunderstand or misinterpret what I am saying about the press. I’m not talking about an announcement of a forthcoming Museum. I’m suggesting you use the press to make contact with those whose stories such a project as yours should be about.
Just my thoughts.Take them or leave them as you wish.

Thanks Kev35
that is really what i was thinking about, a museum (small) about the history of WZ and with recovered wreckage from local incidents, and good write ups on the history of WZ, maybe at most one day a couple of air frmes, and a cockpit or 2 which wil more than likely be in private hands ,
it has to start small, and i imagine it will stay small, for many reasons,
As for wreckage ,i think if displayed properly this may be a winner as there is nowhere in the south west that has “Aviation Archaeology” on display,
in my mind there is no better a tribute to put it on display with full history of each incident, thn say to hae it laying around in someones shed ! with private collectors !
Its going to be a while before it kicks off anyway, and you are right,we could never compete wth FAA museum, and would not want too, just hope to display something a little different 😉
a Great Day,
and great photo’s,
puts my little camera to shame,:(, but a exellent day, one of the best displays i have ever seen:D
Ruddy heck Merckle, does everything have to be dug up and sold?!
It sounds just like an ordinary station dump site, that many airfields have, mostly with extravagant claims of what was dumped and might still remain.
Very briefly, Valley has never been a Coastal Command station, it opened as a fighter station, and became important as USAAF reception point for newly built bombers, delivered straight from the States.
Post war it became one of the RAFs premier flying training stations.
Ruddy hell Pagen!!
who said sold !!. i enjoy the hunt of finding things in the ground !!, nowt to do with money, I was just getting across , what most people would constrew as Junk, is infact quite valuable to someone !!,
If i just wanted to make money, i would just call in the scrap man,job done,
But i dig things up becuase i find it exiting ,not knowing what i could find,
any how i am close to giving all that up anyways, been doing it for years
and now feel a little tired of it, actually really couldnt be arsed anymore, more trouble than its worth,
I am a little fed up with trying to fit in here, so from now on i will keep myu mouth shut,
it seems every time i make a Conversational comment, SOMEONE, has to slag me down, 😡
merkle
Take a look at http://www.fradu-hunters.co.uk there are photos of WH887 there.
Regards,
CC
yep seen them, was after ones that were in Private collections of photos,
thanks any way
🙂
lake dump,
please excuse me for being Nieve,
But i do not know the area well at all,
but is the Lake a freshwater lake, ??, might warrant further investigation,
But I also wonder if it is “Still” out of bounds ??,
as well as the aviation prices which are sky high, there is the possibility of finding vehicle remains, I never realised that if you find a old Willys jeep engine, it can sometimes set you back over £2000, for a original one, prices on ww2 vehicles are going through the roof, you can pay over £5000 now for a 1950s french Hotchkiss copy of the jeep, a real willys ,in tip top condition I hate to think , and ww2 tanks , well they have just gone stupid, rarity and scrap value i suppose combined makes the prices go through the roof,
lets get the Magnetometers over there one day and have a look see,;)
Chris, the cockpit c/n plate is just above the main crew door. This will have the c/n for the cockpit and the mod state for the aircraft / cockpit.
Hint: yours should read SH1644 making it a Shorts built one 😉
Regards
Many Thanks Mark,
I havent got the old bird back to zoyland yet ,so i havent had a chance to get inside yet, ,but still been busy locating all the parts, now i am 90% there,
Then it will be strip clean , paint ,mend , then instrumets etc ,
Cant wait to get me hands on her, and think with the amount of parts ive found ,she will be pretty complete by next years aniversary,
Thats a real Bonus, about the Plate, I just hope its still on the aircraft 😮
Valley Dump,
My Biggest wonder, is if Valley were dumping aircraft remnants back in the 1980s, Crikey, what were they like after the 2nd world war ??
I am being honest, but i dont know the history of Valley, but being so close to the sea, I wondered if Valley was a Maritime,Coastal Command Base during WW2, Liberators, Whitleys halifax, B17, Hudson, That sort of thing, and what if “Anything” happened to those aircraft that crashed or were scrapped During and After the war, I know a team of a few good men who are a whizz on the Forster Magnetometer,
WW2 pits at Valley, mm possible, its out back and beyond, and i reckon warrants some investigation,
MM, I might be having a trip to Kew/Hendon at this rate, I bet the Sqn ORB’s
are VERY interesting :D:diablo:;)
Rich & Max,
Bac 1-11 that suffered compressor failure:eek:
OUCH ,That looks expensive, :diablo:
Cockpitfest is building up nicely, new details online today..
http://www.newarkairmuseum.org/news.php
They report 26 cockpits / rigs / interiors confirmed as participating including a DB 8A-3N from the Netherlands. Not sure what the type is like!
Crikey that DB 8A-3N is a REAL rarity , a WW2 Dutch Recce,Bomber, I am real suprised anything is left of them after the nazis drove through holland ,
well I be Jiggered, one of the rarest birds of all , and at Cockpit fest,
sadly Ive got to miss this year, as “Prior engagement ” is in the way, But be sure to see you next year with Canberra WH887 in Tow 😀
dont think mel gibson is in saving private ryan lol
NooOOOOO, Mel G , was in “we were soldiers” , Not SPR, or Band of bruvs 😮
Pearl Harbor (sic) makes me cry, then curse, then throw stuff!
LOL,
yep very funny, like Bridge to far ,or Midway, ,I never knew the Japs had
Harvards on there carriers, and they must have been in short supply of Hawker typhoons during ww2 as they bomb the jerrys in Bridge too Far,
But the Most Laughable is the “Helicopter” in “Where eagles dare” , they go to all the trouble of finding a Ju52, only to put a chopper in the castle, LOL:D
I could go on, 633sqn Me108???, etc etc ,
