    Mustang query

as theres so much Mustang talk at the mo, I got quite a few to look at that came down in ww2 in the south west, mostly allison engined ones too,

i have “Most” of the basic information from various researches, but any Sqaudron Historians Might have that Little bit more
most losses in this area are 16 sqn, although there are others,
1 story i would like to find more out about is that of Mustang AL959,
she was of 170 Sqn, i believe formed at Westonzoyland, which crashed/Ditched, on 13th of Jan 1943, Sqt Allison Killed, it is believed he tried to make a force landing in the river severn, and did succeed, but he never had his safety harness on, they say in the force of the crash he hit his head on the Panel/Gunsite, and was killed pretty much instantly, a crew rowed out to save him, finding the aircraft just offshore, they recovered his body and rowed back to shore, but when the aircraft recovery team had arrived, the aircraft had disapeared, also the tide had been in and out again since the crash,
can anyone shed any light on this one, I have done my day skipper course ,
but i dont own a boat, theres a few in the channel i would love to investigate on a good day, i imagine a rib craft would be the best bet for searching on the spring tides, any takers ??, put a small team together to hunt,
    PS
I know the rough location of this one, but am keeping it quiet for obvious reasons ,

    what type of model ??

    Hi Matt,

what type of model are you making/looking for ??, is it a plastic kit, or a “Gullows ” type rubber band flyer, or a fully working Radio controlled scale model,

you want to try various Modelling sites,
for plastic kits one of the biggest selers in the country is Hannants
    heres there web site,

    http://www.hannants.co.uk/

they do all sorts of plastic kit conversions etc , even parts like engines etc for 1/72 scale models, there are others
Radio controlled well theres loads of magazines with suppliers of plans and drawings you could use ,
found this site on the web, but i bet theres better ones

    http://www.xlistplans.demon.co.uk/

depends what you want, i would go out and buy a relevant Magazine, and then search the adverts within the magazine on the web, you might be lucky,
i dont think it would be too hard to find early P51, there out there somewhere.
    hope this is of help,;)

    90 years of the RAF

correct me if i am wrong, and i probably am:p

But as much as i love the BBMF, that was 60 years ago, and before that we had WW1 ,with a Massive loss of life, but it seems to me the RAF only centres itself around World War 2 , I would like to see something that spans the RAF ages through time, with the RAF or contracted body to run a small fleet of aircraft through the ages, from ww1 to 30s to 50s 60s 70s to 80s to today ,with the VAST amount of cash our govt seems to throw away some money into keeping our heritage alive wouldnt go a miss,
this would be a nice line up personally speaking,

    Camel, Hawker hind,hurricane spitfire,lancaster, Meteor Vampire,Lightning ,Hunter,Vulcan,tornado, and euro tyhoon ,

the cost would be enormous, but you got to admit it would look nice,

    All the best

COME ON NOW CHAPS CUT IT OUT ,

I understand it can be hard to trawl through the internet finding everything,
I can also understand to be asked for all the information would be a ball ache to a person with such research, no need to fall out,
in time it will come, its all out there ,but takes TIME, to put together,
I am not going to get involved in this one , I have quite a bit of info on various things but havent the time to put it all together at the mo, but like i said give it time, and theres so much t find out, from Hendon,Kew,Veterans, newspapers, locals, the list is endless,
Like the old saying goes, “Rome was not built in a day i suppose”
i would like to just say to all of you who have been kind enough to offer me help, with RAF Weston Zoyland , large or small, MANY THANKS for all the help and continued support, its Very Kind of all you ,and in the great spirit of aviation, which until i met the forumites i thought was as dead as a DODO,
your kind help has prooven that theory wrong at least,
    kind regards
    Chris Collins

The original idea was hatched over a few pints with the co-owner of XW315, seemed a good idea at the time !
However there is a small band of 7 of us who collectively run ‘Demobbed’ ‘UKSerials’ and ‘Eurodemobbed’ – fortunately we took a right decision at the very start which means we can update all the sites at the same time and have one very large database behind it which feeds all the sites, you see different info depending on which site you look at – we have only one entry to update.
This also keeps the site costs down to a sensible level and so make it a free to use resource. Not really interested in making money off the back of it as we do it for our own enjoyment/interest and that way people are more open to supplying info to us for all to share.

Glad you find it informative !

I know Mark, I was only kidding, just saying how popular it is ,and with that popularity, if it was one of them payin porn or dating sites that flood the web,you would have been well off,it was only a bit of a laugh comparison, on the popularity of de-mobbed, because its such a great site, when i get WH887 at least back on its upright again, would be pleased to send a pic for de-mobbed if you so wished 🙂

Work on her is ‘sporadic’ at best, thanks to some idiot (Me) deciding that a website on demobbed aircraft was a good idea…….

Would like to see here at Cockpitfest in some form NEXT year !

    HTH[/QUOTE]

Hey I Know it must be hard work, But i gotta credit you mate, the de-mobbed site is one of the best ive ever seen, please keep up the good work,
I have the same problem with WH887, finding time to do it, but its gotta be worth it in the end,
I bet if De-mobbed was one of those pay as you go “Porn” sites, with the ammount of hits you get daily you would be a very very rich man, 😀 LOL

    Hi Bruce,
just checked on some older photos on the forum , and yes she was the venom offered to me, I was jumping at the chance, but like i said, i lost my job, and that pretty much changed everything at the time, Glad to see she is inside, and being looked after, She is “the one and only” so i think being at the DH museum, is a must, I am glad you are all going to make her look like her old self again one day, i reckon she will be a centre piece for the museum, and where else could you see a british FB.4 ??,
would love o come and see the museum when i am in your neck of the woods,
    Best of luck
    Chris Collins;)

    Airfield

Hi, I drive past this site now and again,
am i right in saying it is old RAF/USAAF Membury, near newbury, just over the wiltshire border into west berkshire ??
if you are traveling westbound there is a memorial in the carpark, which has a prop blade on it,
Base was used alot by C-47s in the war, a lot of famous battles started from that place, i believe, the airbourne troops tokk off for D-Day and arnhem from there , amongst many other airfields

Aviation archaeologists ?? any Ideas anyone,??

    Hi forum,
I hope the Moderators dont mind me writing this as it deflects slightly from the main topic of aviation, But the only people who may have come across these storys are infact aviation archaeologists whilst carrying out there researches,

yes the Old Dump syndrome, but not Aircraft, for a change ,I am intereted in looking for any old army dumps, particularly Tanks , quite a few have been found over the years Buried in the ground, they found a churchill tank in france and ireland and one or 2 in the UK , essex, and devon i believe,

I was told of some Buried on the ww2 tank/artillery range at Exmoor,ex US Shermans
and was told of the odd turret lying about up there,it would be such a unusual find to try and find these army dumps, usually consisting of U/S AFVs
after the D-Day operation, or old range targets, as we know the services back then were renown for burying aircraft, but i belive its more likely the army buried more when they shipped out of a area, i remember searching for a HE111 near crowcombe somerset, and we kept finding old Ammo, first aid Kits etc etc, all ex US army, who were camped there just prior to D-Day
has anyone had any leads or heard any stories of such undertakings , and being its of little interest to a Aviation enthusiast would they be willing to tell me so we could investigate ??, as we have a deepseeking foerster, and i should imagine if we hit a spot where a tank was buried, the damn thing would go off the clock ,
I am passionate about aircraft, but also have a great love of artillery and tanks . so to get any leads would be a dream come true ,
any help would be really appreciated, and no i dont want it all for myself, I would be willing to “Join Up” with someone who has the Info and do the project together,
    Cheers
    Chris C

Well looking at the list above it’s surprising how may airframes and cockpits have been disposed of and are preserved.
I really don’t know who you would deal with re aquiring one, bet it’s one of those things that if you speak to the right person you might get something for very little, or you pay through the nose via a dealer. It seems the MoD rather stick to known disposal agents.
There is an ‘item’ here that I really want, doubt I will ever get the chance of owning it though, even when they get rid of it.

I will try a bit of snooping, but one thing is for sure, the MoD like a swift and clean operation, no turning up on site with a canoe trailer and a hacksaw!

I can understand that about the MOD ,they wouldnt want you to arrive with a Knackered old car transporter, and a few hacksaws , if i was going to do it, I would try and find myself a “Ahem” aviation Prostitute” for a better word, who would do it for me Professionally, Now wether or not i could afford such services would need some looking into on my part, 😀
