Anyone know of any good web sources of details of aircraft losses in Wiltshire?
cheers
Tony
hi Tony,
i got virtually the lot,the whole air-britain series ,from 1930s- to 2000,RAF, and FAA 46-2000 ish,
what do you need to know, ??
benyboy, all into the scrap bin, be interestingto know how recycleable a modern (historic?!) airframe is.
Would i be right Pagen, the only way to try and sucure a scrap airframe/Complete aircraft cockpit ,would be to approach the DSA.
I imagine the cost from the DSA would be atronomical as they seem to rather
scrap the aircraft, a heaven forbid, sell a U/S piece of RAF hardware to a member of the public, no matter his or hers honest intensions, bloody beurocrats, and red tape,
scrapping
I know its enevitable, but still sad to see the old tornado being chopped up,
i am sure when its gone we will miss it, as its one of those aircraft that has a good raf combat history with the gulf war etc ,
when there all gone ,well miss em,
Does seem a shade premature, there are so many spare Tornado airframes kicking about I think the RAF are giving them away.
There’s a load spare here at St Athan and when I spoke to someone about it he intimated they couldn’t get rid of them.
What I can’t understand is why so many collections want one (let alone two!).
The one at Cosford looks well out of place, being displayed amongst the German WWII aircraft
Cor,
well if there Giving them away, i would like a complete cockpit please freshly cut , in Gulf war colours,:D ,Oh and i wouldnt dream of not saying “Please”
take it to shows and raise money for the poor sods who got “Gulf war Syndrome” etc, as the government doesnt seem to give a damn about its own service personel, especailly when they have been injured and invilid out of the services, “thanks very much old chap” now dont make a fuss and try and get on with your life What !” oh and heres a fiver for your trouble my good man, sorry to hear youve lost your legs” but we all have sacrifices to make dont we old man” Now run along ,theres a good chap ! “
😮
yep, nasty things them, if you find one ,bury it where you found it, its not worth taking home, same goes for those 20mm shell heads with Brass tips,
look nice but i have been told they are the same, (expolosive) have known of 7.92 jerry rounds to Crumble and “cook off” as well, as the jerry heads seem to be predomanantly Iron, carbon steel, thats quite thin, if one breaks in the open air, could give you a very nasty Burn,
and as for Photo Flash Bombs, well we wont even go there :diablo:
Nice to see the Canberra assoc going strong, Hope it was a great day,
nice to see our veterans meeting up with old comrades once in a while,
Can anyone join the Canberra Assocaition ???, and would they be interested in me and WH887, you never know , someone there may have flown in her 😀
yep, sorry Bamel , Miles away i was, not taking full attension, thanks BAMEL for placing this post,
sorry again, yes i know “Numpty” i can be sometimes, or is it empty head, 😀
Yes,and i think the CAA may have some issues with future Avon operation.
Cripes, will this effect Hunters too ????
HAPPY BIRTHDAY CANBERRA !!!!
yes thanks for putting this Post up Matt,
Happy Birthday Canberra, Hopefully still to be in britains skys in the future,
Looks like I got my work Cut out to get WH887 ready for the 60th Birthday
next year, I reckon it shuld be a Canberra Special celibration 😀
will Cockpitfest 2008 be the year of the Canberra ????
for a old girl i cant think of any other aircraft that has served with HM forces with such a long service record,
she is a tribute to her designers and the services she provided.
rambo
reckon they should make a new film where the “junta” calls in the “A” team,
then we can see B A Baracus say to Rambo ,”stop your Jibber Jabber Fool”
and get some nuts!!!” 😀
many thanks But !!
Hi, thanks for that Wiesso ,
but i allready know of all the perticulars, and have seen the photos , etc , and i know the exact spot she went down as i live 4 miles from the site ,i even have a couple of bits ,given to me ,long time ago,
but my mystery is can anyone verify what i have allways been told, and that is that she had the LONGEST Duration Flight of any spitfire during ww2 , or certainly 1943 and previous to her crash, as i was told she broke the record,
and to me it certainly seems impossible that a spitfire can travel from Gibraltar in southern spain to Oxford (her intended route), but unfortunately she crashed in the bristol area , sadly F/L Johnson was killed on Bale out and landed a mile from th crash site , right outside a cottage door, the lady who found him was in a terrible state for days ,she heard the bang on her roof and ran to the door, only to find him there, sadly he had been killled , later enquiry prooved that he had struck the aircraft on bale out,,aircraft tookoff at 09:45 AM and was plotted over south coast at 2pm, @20’000 ft
15 to 20 mins later, dived into the ground at wraxall
would be interested if anyone can confirm this mystery of the Longest flight ??
thanks again
Merkle
Parts
Yes they look like aircraft parts , ive been on many digs and the aluminium bit looks like part of a control rod of some sort, (i am guessing ) but i have seen and found simalar pieces in the past,
Tell me did you find it ,whilst out metal detecting one day, or during a walk ??
you could have a crashsite there
Fully Agree Paul,
this is why i want to start i now, and it is just as fascinating as ww2,
especailly how fast the advancement of aircraft was in those 30 years,
britains golden age of aircraft design i would say,
I am thinking of starting a website too with all those interested,
on another note, i bet you got loads in Australia where you are,
if theres anything ww2 i would like to find its bits ffrom a jap plane crash
but other than that you got all those meteor F.8 in Aus, i bet your country is rife with interesting sites
thanks for the good luck wishes,
kinnd regards
Chris C aka Merkle
so is ther all ready a canberra group i can join ??
rather than start a new group
