surely someone is interested in this famous old bird ?????:D
New technique for restoring Canopys !!
Hi , Interesting subject,
I learnt today of another technique that seems drastic, but does seem to work
Paul with wv499 tried it on a old milky yellow canopy glass to see if it would work
,he says it had marvelous results ,
he used very fine wet and dry Paper, and polished all over it and yes he said
scratched the surface 😮
But he said the yellowing disapeared, as did the milkyness, and then with this rough surface he sprayed it with Modern Laquer hence filling any fine marks with a fine spray ,which has UV protection in it as most modern laquers do, he let it dry, and Buffed it up,
it looked really good, compared to what it did look like ,almost new,and clear
if anyone has a bit of old scrap perspex thats yellowed etc, Give it a try , I would love to see if it works with somebody else
😀
Could be PROSPERITY or POSTERITY?:D
Ok i am sooooooooo good with my spelling, 😮
Posterity,
I bet your a teacher in real life , ever heard the phrase “No one likes a smart ****” hehe:p 😀
I got it wrong
Hi, i got it wrong in the earlier post,
Air britain just says sold as scrap sept 1970,
but on “Canberra Survivors ” website it says Flowers Yard
WE142
Air Britain serials files WA-WZ
we142 it states ” we142 540Sqn/231ocu , sold as scrap 1970, to flowers scrapyard chippenham”
also i was a regular at flowers, and when the day of the final sale came ,i took this piece from her , i don’t believe she was sold , and was broken up, it was the cockpit /Nose only, and it was busted open ,crushed ,
i saved this piece for prosperity
So, you are living in the garage now?:D
ahh well. its me mums garage, ive kinda taken it over ,
😉
got all sorts of crap in there , “alladins cave ”
But my Old Mum said to me ” Dont even THINK of putting that cockpit section in there, HMMMfff, as if i would :diablo:
besides that it wouldnt fit any ways ,lol:D
Canberra Club
😉 Looks like we will have to start up a canberra club at wz  😀
Har Har 😀
Not a bad Idea, you know i am starting to fall for the old Bird, even found some canberra crashsites that may Possibly be worth taking a look at , (with a MOD licence of course )
Not worth next to nothing, like spitfire dig bits, etc, But i dont do it for that.
But really interesting Postwar History, They have ” all got a Story to tell”
the way i am going we will be the Post war recovery group, just located a Chippie,(its a Local one,LOL:D ) and another Meatbox T.7 , that might be worth looking at ,That served with 12FTS at Westonzoyland 😀
Many Thanks ,Millom !
I will contact the guy, to get that elusive piccy, also thres a few others he might have 😀
(unless anyone allready have a free one ) Cheeky I know, but dont ask dont get 🙂 😀 :diablo:
many thanks
Chris C
sorry found her !!
Sorry gang,
but just found her Serial No on the Net, she was a PR.3 No WE142
was part of the airace team for the above said race, with 540 Sqn RAF Wyton. sold to Flowers Scrap yard in 1970,
but Still No photos of her, “Have any of you ANY phtos of her either at the yard , or even better whilst in service ???
thanks again
Chris C
Yep thats the ones !!
These might be the ones that you saw http://www.geocities.com/CapeCanaveral/Hangar/9376/F86F.htm
yep , those are the ones, photographed over 10 years ago,
now i wondered ,are they still there falling to bits, or are they pots and pans by now ???
I dont know if any of you have ever been there or seen or heard of them since ??
Van/4×4
I think if not works 4×4, i will take Richy D’s advice and “Hire ” a van for the weekend, its gotta be cheeper than “Owning ” one with all the insurance/high tax , daily running costs ,etc etc
I did own a frontera until recently, but simply could not affrod to run it
i only had it 2 months and i hardly used it,
and frontera are cheep !! for a 4×4
when i get some money up together will look for a sturdy Car/Boat/Ifor trailer,to mount the canberra nose,
cor no wonder people go for the “Little-Uns” transport can be a nightmare,
I originally wanted Nothing bigger than a Hunter Nose, (for the reasons of transport etc, )
But couldnt bare to see old WH887 in such a mess, and with her westonzoyland history although brief , i Had to have her,
at least she is saved now and hopefully wont take too many years to restore,
its funny you start a path with clear rules, but always end up with something different , but its amazing how attached you can get, especailly when its your “First” aircraft cockpit !!:D
😀
See the following
http://forum.keypublishing.co.uk/showthread.php?t=75422&highlight=t33
MerlinPete might be able to check if they are still available
mmm, i wouldnt pay top dollar for it, its a real mess,
i would try a save all of it, until i seen the photos 🙁
but the “front office” with canopy, would at least be worth saving,or any parts useful to others,ie wings etc
it would go on the back burner, but undercover,as canberra takes precident:D
but she gotta be worth saving at least something
balliols
And the few, seen over 15 years ago in Cuba ,
I was told, also Havoc, (ive seen photos of his kids in it, and 2 or 3 Mustangs(seen Pic of one) (private)
and tons of other stuff,
My friend was given a tour by the Cuban airforce and Raul Castro, of all there Air bases, with vintage stuff on,(he was hunting Sea Furies), but he did mention some balliols,
he very nearly secured a fury, but thats another story,
  (i know NONE of you will believe me) but i know what i saw, because i didnt believe it either to start with,
Goes to show, theres a lot of stuff Hidden away on old airbases abroad, if you ever get the chance to see it 😮 😀
Recommended, but not essential, anyway my three and a half cyl defender was legendary…..
Not essencail, you mean my 1950s Moggy minor wont Pull it, ??LOL:D
,Joking apart, i reckon could borrows works Pick up ,4×4, one of those new
Mitsubishi ones,I think its 2.5 ltr , that will pull it surely, ?
‘Rubbish’ it maybe, but old chap that is what you get with volunteer based organisations in any hobbyist field…..out of a hundred people that are on the books less than 6% do anything tangible. What you need is to look at the cross section of our forum…there are doers, there are authors, restorers, interested enthusiasts, toggies, all sorts….but all of them have their own interests and demands on their time. I would suggest that waiting only 5 days and then declaring the response ‘rubbish’ is a trifle bit unkind and unwarranted! Not everyone shares your vision and those that do should be nurtured….just some friendly advice! 🙂
🙂 Ahh yes the saying “ROME WAS NOT BUILT IN A DAY” comes to mind,
and this is very very very early days 😀
