    Thanks Tony 🙂

but to be honest, I dont need all this much, as I dont have anywhere to display it, I think some of the parts will be going to a local museum, perhaps in weston, as this was its intended destination, which PX229 never arrived, at least some of it will arrive at its intended destination all be it 60 years later .

Sadly the dig with the Mini digger didnt come up to much, although a few interesting items came out.

Due to such corrosive soil , most of the aluminium was turning to powder before our eyes,:(

some bits were of interest though, a switch with SAFE and NOSE FUZED was found, (armament ??)

a really nice welded piece must be engine, maybe remains of stubb ??

armoured glass, brass oxy fitting, inspection hatch, plastic/rexine type circular piece ( part of Dingy pump ??)

i leave some pictures.. what are your thoughts ?

    🙂

Dave, i believe it to be U/C strut, due to the fact it was on route to be converted at the workshops of the TDU at weston super mare, ,so I imagine PX229 had not had any conversions fitted due to its loss prior to arrival ??

Creaking door,Yes i believe your right, sadly the soil up there is so acidic,
and the steel is very heavily corroded, 🙁

I have restored and removed corrosion from lots of parts before, but never steel, and frankly do not have a clue as what to use to “stop the rot ” 🙁

    and Nick,
yes Rexine, I to wonder just what use it was ? the part seems like a pipe fitting, with a rexine shroud ?

Dave, would you need a cannon shroud as a template for your Hornet project ??
    😀

and IS that a Bomb Shakle in the photo ???

I thought they were prop, I imagine even the prop hubs smashed to pieces too.. the 20 mm, we only found the muzzle, I imagine to snap a 20mm , PX229 must have been going with some force 😮

many thanks for the replies 🙂 .. and what knowledge !!..

I am hoping to find a bit more, its a gamble ,but worth it, the baffling thing is we have not found one piece of cockpit equiptment, apart from a few shards of perspex 🙁 a prop.. or a some data labels would be more than nice to find :D.

lots of shallow steel targets , not much luck with the fisher either, but we found the impact spot, as we found the cannon shrouds, about 3 ft down and not far apart, no cannons though sadly :(. apart from a muzzle , I will put more on as i find it and will post a picture of the complete lot found as to date, 🙂

Nick.. after reading your report, the sites are allmost identical !!, we found smashed engine, but not one valve yet, and cannon shrouds, also a assortment of very small fragments over a wide area, and also its ironic that you too, never found any cockpit parts, like the PX274 you researched, the airframe must have shattered to tiny pieces flinging parts over a wide area .

Many thanks Dave, I am very chuffed , to find a Hornet is one thing, But to have the earliest parts extant of one, well… its mind blowing, Like I said, this is so important as a find for british aviation history, it doesnt matter if the pieces are bent and corroded, I will try to preserve all, My Girl friend Tina, found the first difinative piece, the Constant speed unit, all be it very corroded.

I am quite sad that it has blown itself out the hole, as i dont think we will find as much as i would have wished, and it really doesnt warrant the use of a Mini digger, but being the ground is so hard, and stoney, and the chance that we “May” find more. and due to its rarity, I am happy to put my hand in my pocket and get a digger. if we get just another small bag of bits, its still Hornet.. and still very much worth it .. Thanks for your support Dave and all, And yes I am sure I have plenty for you to identify 😀

Thanks for your replies chaps, ( erm Sorry Tony, I got it wrong,PX229 was based at Farnborough with the RAE , )

    History as follows

DH Hornet F.1 PX229 of RAE Farnborough en route to RAF Locking TDU for torpedo development trails/conversion. , Piloted by Lt Commander Thomas Bentley . crashed 12th November 1946 at Charterhouse ,on the mendips, after flying through low cloud, and clipping the trees, the Aircraft carried on across the valley only to hit the opposite hillside, Causing a huge crator,
the Pilots was thrown clear, but sadly was pronounced dead at the scene.Ironically , it was RAF Lockings RAF personel who had to gaurd and remove the wreckage. here are a few pieces that I have given a little clean with the bead blaster, very corroded , part of one the magneto’s
also a fuel ,Oil filler,Compressor cap, piece od supercharger casing, and hydro/electrical fitting,
I got so much to clean up , well, a bag full, and to be honest, most of it is very corroded, but it is hornet, and nothing will be thrown, incase it is of use to someone 🙂

I believe it was one of only 2 of that type that crashed in the uk . the other coming down in scotland, the hurricane isnt rare, but the amount of crashes of the RAF Mrk IIB in the uk is ??,

most of them went off to the far east i believe .

    Yes Andy,

the first image is of the one i have ,

only some of the letters are un deciferable due to damage,

would this only be a component label ??

and if so, would a component from a H series, be able to be fitted to a D| series ??

ie engine ancillery parts, pumps etc .??

if so , this engine plate may have not been a duff one after all, ??

I bought this plate many years ago, also with plates a parts from the Do217 at westerham kent, it was clearly marked, on the back of the board it was on Stuka, Pagham, 1940
now i have been told there is no way this plate could have come from such a aircraft, even if the board was made many years ago, and i believed the man who sold it to me genuine ??

Dont think the Repulse/Prince of Wales is a goer as it would show what a bunch of poratts the RN top brass were at the time and probably no ships left that would fit the bill for filming..Esmond VC would probably fail for the same reason even though it SHOULD be made.

My Uncle was on the POW 😮

and was there ever a book written about the Taranto raid… Now that would be action packed 🙂
