Whitley
Thanks,
good dig in hand then, shame its a whitley, bloody useless they were,
i suppose the engines are worth recovering, nice rocker covers, and some nice early data plates , as for the rest ,
Game on,
as for the blenhiem wouldnt mind a cockpit off of one of them, but i bet theres not much left of it especailly with sea water and all,
but if it all cant be saved then cut the nose off at least
DARRT
You havent got a spare cockit for sale have you 😀
if i can be any help to you with my forster , i would be happy to help,
there must be sites that were dug in the 70s that warrant further investigation, the machine i got detect steel down to 30 + feet,
you might have missed a engine or two :dev2:
Propellors in the Mud,
The wreck site in the photo was taken between Portishead and south wales,to the north of portishead, the wreck is actually a DH Mosquito, lost after the war Pilot was reported missing never found ,
I have the details on this one, and many others, (i need a rib boat:D ) theres loads in the channel,
one of the 2 dorniers in woodspring bay sometimes pops up, the also lost Lancaster SW278 between weston and clevedon coast, also gladiator piloted by K.C.Vickery, He111 1G+GM, only about 2000 yards from my house,
a beufort, spitfires, various jets, and ww2 types, Ive got all the info buried in my cuboard,How do i know this, well been studying it for 20 years, and i live in Portishead, problem is the tide out here is the 2nd fastest in the world, very dangerous stuff to be playing in, although if i had a offer of any boats doing a bit of mudskipping for wrecks , Count me in, i am sure i can be of help 😀
Cheers
Chris C
ps,
as for the blnhiem , it came down near lydney harbour, they tried to pull it out ,but the tail broke off, i have seen a photo of it in the late 70s when it re surfaced, but days later was covered by the shifting sands ,its still there,
as is the complete belly flop Mustang, (RAF) that crashed, pilot fractured his skull on landing, they rowed out to get him but he was allready dead, recovered his body, shut the canopy , come back to recover the aircraft and it had vanished, probably with the tide , if only i could get my hands on a boat
What about the B36 that crashed at Boscombe Down? Well, in a field ‘almost at’ Boscombe Down!
I believe the crew were lost on a training flight from Texas! 😀
She was repaired at the A&AEE and flown out.
Bri 🙂
yep, i know the one, actually crashed near Lacock, in a wood,
problem with the “big stick” is just that, its SOOoooo BIG , all i can imangine me finding there is tons of “skinning” thats all i ever seem to find:( ,
its no wonder they call me the “scratcher”, surface scratching about and only
finding skinning, would be nice one day to find a instrument face or a few decent data plates, or blow me, a engine one day, if it got any worse i think i would hang me coat up, and call it a day, a sell off all my gear,
doing cockpits must be alot easier, than scrabbling around for bits of tinning, at least you get something to show for all the work youve done over the years, sorry to sound so Glum, but i have near enough had it,Like most of us on the forum (i imagine) ive had years of the mrs moaning about it, my mates who restore planes taking the pi@@ out of me, and its been bloody expensive, not to mention thousands of hours over the years, and pretty much sod all to show for it.
Is there anyone else out there who has been a scratcher like me ??:D
ive been in this game since i was 14 years old, and now i am 36, and stil i have never seen a JCB dig, let alone a engine come out of the ground:(
catterick tanks
Unlikely there are tanks down mines @ Catterick, I was local & there are no mines @ Catterick, several quarries in the area, years ago there were WW2 tanks on the Army ranges around Catterick/Richmond.Be interested to know where your friend thinks the mines are located. There are disused lead & copper mines in Swaledale, visited most of them in my youth, no tanks in any of them.
My friend is now long dead,
He was Goerge Morley of the old South west aircraft recovery group,
He was in the RAC,then was transferred to the Paras , then in palestine after the war, and his last job was a transferal to the RAC,as a instructor,
he was given the job of “trying to cut up 2 churchills” and they gave up,
he was based at catterick, he said they managed to dispose of them down a disused mine shaft, he was allways on about it, shame he has now long gone,
he allways wanted to find them again, but was a OAP, with little money to do such things,
Military items
also if any one knows of dumped military equiptment, ie tanks, believe it or not i have heard and seen beried tanks etc in the UK, i personally knew a friend who, dumped 2 churchill tanks down a mine at catterick, yorks,
as i have a interest in all things military, I would be keen to help locate such things as Buried tanks, etc etc, ,but i know its not your sort of thing,
you never know though , nothing ventured nothing gained, theres no harm in me asking, and as for me i am not greedy, i just ask if i maage to find something with the foerster, then i get a few bits a pieces , and a invite to the dig, if poss, have any others of you whilst been out researching crashes
been told of buried Armour ???
i have been told of some near somerset, but its a very weak link, someone said Ferret scout cars, But the army would not bury ferrets there too modern, they would have gone to auctions, or scrappy,
any ideas of any weird and wonderful things “Other” than aeroplanes ??
buried in the ground ????:D
wreckology
By the way , I have all the Air britains apart from 1939-45 FAA
but they are sketchy at the best of times ,
its old research i am keen to find and old eyewitness reports if thats possible ,
thans again

i guess tony you were loking for that ilusive Hurricane that was there, shame old peter Arnold, Bought near enough everything, well anthing ww2 apart from that Prop boss from a hurri , i was in there searching for stuff for the canadian halifax, I even got quite a few visits from Karl Kjasgaard, hunting with me for bits, I took him to a multitude of places, looking for halibag bits,
I wish i had bought one of those canopys though, there was a pile of tidy ones, problem was i had to wait for the phone at home to get the Order from the canadian lot to bid on certain parts, and sadly they left it too late, by the time they phoned me, (no mobile back then),I got there in a rush and just missed it, I remember p,arnold grinning ear to ear as he had the “Worlds”
collection of spitfire undercarraige legs, Kygass primers, turret rings all sorts of goodies, Shame they scrapped the wings etc of WV838, Roy could do with tha stuff now,
is there Any Scrappies left, does hanningfords still get stuff?
or what about some of the museums ,gotta be honest some aircraft are in a right state, now i am not having a go, i know its hard and expensive to
try and look after a gaggle of aircraft at a museum , when they are outside for 20 + years, but some of the repairs, I saw a meteor once having patches of Sheet fibreglass plastered all over it, and it looked a right bodge job,
i remember thinking “ouch” what happens when a museum aircraft becomes
a dangerous liability , (IE its falling apart) I am sure there is a few aircraft like this in the country, I remember when the welsh museum closed, I really wanted the Mystere, that was abandoned there, but they were something to do with the USAF, and they were witnessed by them being scrapped,
🙁
pre war losses.
Hi,
i suggest the air britains J and K files, there full of bulldogs, etc etc,
then theres the very famous aircraft near me,
G-AFGO the Lockheed electra that took chaimberlain to Munich in 1938,The same pilot infact a Commander Robinson,he is beried in our church yard, with a lockheed electra with “PEACE” written above it, it was a big concern when he dived ito the rock at the beach of redcliffe bay in 1938, the funeral had dignitaries from all over the world when it happened,
crashed Nov 22 ,1938, onto the rocks , another MAIN source of good first hand crash information is your local library, for the newspapers through the 30s,
get the dates and types etc from the air britains and then take those dates to the library for the news paper of the day or day after, it usually says something and a hell of a lot of first hand witnes reports,
I have a near complete cylinder from a bristol Bulldog that crashed near bath ,the farmer ploughed it up, and geuss what, after a shotblast, the bloody plg still works, Ahh , theres british enginnering for you
Hope this helps,
Kind regards
Chris Collins:D
wd965
😀 yep, i believe thats the one, sat under a pile of iron, and a ****** to get too,
i got the top of the smased ejector seat with the “danger” plate, and couple of other bits a pieces, but i was allways told she had something to do with the lodon-christchuch new zealand run,
but never found anything to proove this ??
as or exeptions, well we all want one of those dont we:D
Brigand RH760
Just to let you know i am fascinated with Colerne,
and i have found the crashsite of Bristol Brigand RH760, I think she was the first brigand to be lost at colerne a T.4 variant i believe, she come down in a field South of the airfield, two fields over from that a Douglas Havoc (intruder)
Flowers yard
Did you see one of the Air Race Canberras there? Just the cockpit smashed to bits. I forget her number off hand but I was told she was something to do with the record breakers in the day.I got a large piece of skinning with stenciling on it from her when they finally broke her up, poor thing was busted open like a tin can 🙁
wv838
When I was a lot younger,I used to climb all over WV838! I was always in that scrap yard. I had the stick from wv838 (which i gave Roy when i found out he was restoring her).
She was in 5 parts, tail, middle, cockpit near the fence and wings, all the undercarriage in as well It was just the cockpit that was gutted, those were the days. 🙂
I gotta say Bucc,he is one lucky b******, It’s also how you look at it. My mate who restores planes to fly, thinks its a bit of fun, BUT SPEND HUNDREDS OF POUNDS EVEN THOUSANDS ON A PIECE OF SCRAP that will never fly. He just can’t get over that. He can’t understand those who love aircraft, don’t necessarily want to fly in them. It’s horses for courses, one mans poo, is another mans gold so to speak
Yep just like Tim Hake all those years ago, got that Canberra from the Castle cary ATC for £50. The C/O thought it was a health hazard and dangerous, so he bit Tim’s hand off. And then there’s the recently scrapped cockpit of a Canberra in Kilmarnock by
the ATC.
