    I have a record of the Chief Ground Instructor at 13 OTU, Bicester, being killed when his Avro Tutor, K8171, crashed inverted during aerobatics on 23rd Nov 1941. I don’t know if this is your man.
    S/Ldr Murray James TULLY, 39911, RAF. Buried Morningside Cemetery, Edinburgh. Age 25.
    The passenger was also killed.
    F/Lt Roger Arnold HENDERSON, 83932, RAFVR. Cremated at Oxford Crematorium.
    Regards,
    Doug.

    The following is a possibility;
    On 7th March 1944, Lancaster ME646 blew up at dispersal, 0145 hrs, after an armourer had decalared the DA fuse on the 4,000 lb cookie safe!
    Lancaster JA687 was severely damaged and written off. No injuries.

    Binbrook,
    Try Googling “Peter Dunn 460 Sqn”. You may get some info there.
    My money is on ME646, though.

    That was a great clip. I haven’t laughed so much in a long time. Just love that re-heat!

    You are correct, Kev.
    That is the only aircrash I have recorded at Stanton St John.
    It crashed while on a height test from West Raynham. Crew as stated.

    Hi Jules,
    Yes, General Duties is aircrew. No awards were made to your two airmen, so a squadron cannot be ascertained.

    Adrian; You asked for search tips on the London Gazette. I got fed up with searching for RAFVR Officer’s service numbers, because it only found Army officers with similar numbers. Also, it would not find anything when searching a surname, with initials.
    I then spent a couple of months using various search criteria, such as Royal Air Force; Volunteer Reserve; Air Ministry; Distinguished Flying Cross and Distinguished Flying Medal, etc. All those relevant results were then saved as PDFs to Documents. I have covered the period from 1937 to 1948 and searching is much improved. Mind you, it takes up 929 Mb, but it is worth it.
    I never go to the LG website nowadays.
    PS, Don’t tell anybody, because someone is bound to complain.
    Doug.

    Hi kat_hamps,
    I have checked through my Avro Lancaster database using the criteria of five buried in France, one missing and one PoW. There are no matches in 1943, but there is a match in the winter of 1942 and another in the summer of 1944. From the latter is the following;
    The survivor was F/Sgt John Eric PRICE. RAFVR. He became a PoW in Stalag Luft 7, Bankau, nr Kreuzberg, Poland.
    The missing airman was P/O Dennis LANGFORD, DFC. RAFVR. From Portsmouth, Hants. Is this your man?
    If you require further details, please let me know.
    Regards, Doug.

    Well, I went through the Air Raids Logs for Berkshire and Oxfordshire and they were very detailed. All I can say is hard luck.

    Chox,
    If you have a County Records Office in Sheffield, you should be able to go through the original Air Raids Wardens Log, which is likely to be more accurate.

    Hi George,
    May I suggest the D.O.R.I.S. section of the RAF Museum, Hendon?
    Many years ago, I spoke to Ken Hunter, who had been compiling a list of A.H. numbers, for many years. Ken retired some years ago, but he may have passed his notebook on to one of his colleagues, there.
    Good luck.

    Hello Grzegorz,
    “The following was extracted from 300 Sqn ORB, several years ago;

    “Hit by flak on approaching the target (Emienville). The rear gunner was blown out of his turret, but his left foot was trapped inside. He was, therefore, left dangling in the slipstream. The mid-upper gunner went to his aid and decided that, to make certain that his colleague would not fall, he would operate the rotation valve, to hold the leg tighter! This was successfully accomplished. When they were flying over the Channel, the flight engineer came to their assistance, with a rope, which thrown out to the rear gunner. This he tied around himself, but it was not possible to haul him back inside. Therefore, the aircraft was landed at Tangmere with him still hanging outside. Luckily, he was able to move his upper body out of the way, on touchdown. The landing was also made with a full bomb load of 11 x 1,000 and 4 x 500 HEs, as the bomb release mechanism had beed damaged by the flak burst.”

    No awards appear in the London Gazette, because of security concerns for relatives remaining in Poland.
    Regards,
    Doug.

    If Lost Bombers is such a big issue, why haven’t those offended by it’s presence taken action to see that it is closed down?

    Any news on whether or not your excellent Lancaster Roll of Honour is either continuing in print form or going on CD?

    Hi Kevin, I thought that if I gave that old Walsall Terrier a prod, I would get a reaction. That site cannot be closed down as it has been paid for, in advance, for a few more months.
    The CD Rom is now ready and covers the period from May to December 1943.
    Details on PlaneTalk.

    Kenneth Joseph GOWING was commissioned on 17/5/44, from Sgt, 1468379.
    The evaders were as follows;
    Edwin Glynn BISHOP. From Liverpool.
    Alfred James HALHEAD. From Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.
    Edward William GARDNER. From Elgin, Moray, Scotland.
    Ronald WILKINSON. From Wyke, Bradford, W.Yorks.
    Wallace William DINEEN. From Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

    Research in these areas, via local newspapers, may turn up something.

    Message for Kevin; I am surprised at you promoting that Lost Bombers site.
    Regards, Doug.
