I don’t think there were any early P-51s on Malta, were there?
This is fun, next guess please!
Ok so here is a long shot if the Allison engine heralds from Malta and Malta is surrounded by the ocean could it have been in a MTB/PT boat, a quick look at PT boat history say’s PT-8: 81 ft (25 m) built by a Philadelphia Navy Yard; aluminium hull; 2 Allison 2,000-hp engines, + 1 Hall-Scott 550-hp engine
just my guess but probably wild out ?
Thanks TonyT i can assure you its not for want of trying.
So bentwingbomber did you manage to get any photographs or can you enlighten the unenlightened as to what was going on please ?!!?
Can’t bear to let that pass without comment. There may well be a number of visitors who don’t really understand what they’re visiting but, for so many, the chance they may see a warbird in action is an exciting prospect and one that is almost unique to Duxford. I’ve been on both sides of the fence when a Merlin starts up and seen a swath of people run from all parts of the site to stand at the fence to watch and photograph. Its good that there are other attractions at the site to cater for all tastes but it is the historic flying machines that are Duxford’s jewel in the crown.
I have read the post’s about flying and static aircraft at Duxford with interest. I am a member of the so called public and get to Duxford about 5 or 6 times a year which include the Friday before Legends and the main Duxford show in September. So not many more after that, however hearing any warbird start up (and you can tell) can usually see a group of us public run/walk faster than normal to the fence line to watch. Sometimes wondering why we are watching a P51 Mustang start up shut down and not go anywhere and (call it a Spitfire as i have herd) These aircraft have been brought into our national pride and ingrained into our Psyche even if some people get them identified wrong, going to Duxford is about everything you can see, smell and touch there making it a place of living history. If there is anything wrong with Duxford is that it seems to depose of its assets, i wouldt know if the JU52 was German, French, American or Russian built, and could do with modernising the way it displays its collections. As an example it could have put together the JU52, ME109, Spitfire, Hurricane together with vehicles and other equipment it has/had and called it “The Defence of Britain display” and include modern lighting sound productions, perhaps the current curator could set up a blog or something to ask interested parties ideas on how to improve the way exhibits are displayed ?
I will be looking forward to visiting Duxford again but am currently out of work so this is the only way i can catch up with and see what’s happening at this unique living museum so to all those who keep posting updates and images thank you š š
warbird leaving
I hope the Hurricane stays in the UK after its sale
the loss of another warbird across the pond !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:(

Is the Yak 3, a Yak 11 convert, a new-build or a genuine veteran?
i was driving along the A12 on the Martlesham Bypass about 145 and could have possibly seen her do two turns over Woodbridge ? it sure looked like the wing plan but was a bit far away over towards Bentwaters so couldn’t be sure
its been a while since white 100 has been seen. I did here somewhere that she’s based in Suffolk now ? any truth in that.
The TFC fleet out to play

I cant post the image Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
The TFC fleet out to play when it was HOT and SUNNY in September
Thanks professoreugene
i have been delving in to my family’s history and have been cob-smacked at what does come out. Apparently my Fathers Mothers brother (grans brother) joined the air force sometime around 1920’s and served in Afghanistan flying Harts i think, finally ending up serving alongside Churchill in Whitehall i have a copy of the London Gazette stating that he was promoted to Flg Offs Administrative and Special Duties Branch 17th December 1942 something to do with air reconasence dad says he still has a camera he used that anything under 3/4 mile would be blurred as it was to close.
Then Mum tells me that my Uncle Derek served on Arctic Convoys and his brother was a dispatch rider attached to NO 11 Group fighter command, she’s now digging through old photos to see if they have anything. Should be an interesting few weeks ?
After reading the posts in this thread i wonder how many other members have memorabilia from there parents/grandparents from this time in history.
My dad was evacuated from London in 1940 (Enfeild) to Suffolk Framlingham to be precise returning home 1944 I think this was the home of the 390 Bomb group but don’t know which individual units where there. For a while, while people would listen he used to recount having a ride in what he says was a B17. I haven’t found out if it was just around an airfield or flying sadly now he wont talk about it. However i still have his evacuation tag, gas mask in its cardboard box and some form of ID or ration book
I was there today with my two grown up sons and we all had a great time and they thoroughly enjoyed it. By the way I counted three passes by the Spifire…
There were no passes last year due to the weather.Graham
i do beleive that there was a P51 displaying last year approximately 1230 ?
This thread is a classic case of somebody starting a thread but actually wasn’t even there. Thank you GrahamF for posting the facts. This time of the year is our busiest with 7 a/c out and about this weekend. We try our best and sometimes because of weather and unserviceablilites we can’t make all the venues. Paul B
Sorry Fluffy you are right i wasn’t standing outside the control tower, however i do live 5 minutes walk from it and have done so since 1989. In the past i have seen many flypasts both from privately owned war birds, the BBMF and the USAF
Iām sure the BBMF will have made every effort to include a flypast in what was probably a very busy weekend for them. When was this? Last weekend, although the weather was good in places, between show venues it was bad enough to cause cancellations.
Today at 1430ish (thats Sunday 09/09)
Flames were certainly visible from the Friends of Duxford area….appeared to be coming from the Stbd engine, and were extinguished by the ground crew, I think…some time before the fire trucks arrived.
Why do all the fire appliances arrive from the eastern end of the airfield? Is there one stationed at the western end?
Was watching this happen in-between the AAM and Tank hall and thought the same. there is an emergency access gate right in front of where i was standing. A few DX staff tried to keep it clear until about 12.00 noon but once this end filled up with people i guess it was imposable (see attached photo taken well before 12.00 noon) perhaps its time the organisers re assessed their risk assessments considering flying takes place this end of the airfield right untill the displays start and placed a fire truck this end too.
