Interesting that all 4 configurations got adopted. Even more interestnig that 2 of them were adopted by the Soviets! You suppose they had a line to NASA?

It doesn’t look as sleek as the 747 though. A bit pugnacious ๐Ÿ™‚

Well what did you expect from a plane designed to carry 800 people…

This company makes telescopic hangers http://www.indaltech.com/products/structures/structures.htm
Anyone know what ship this is?

That’s an Italian Lupo class frigate. Below is half-sister ‘Soldati’ class, 4 originally built for Iraq and taken over by the Italian navy.

On the right is the telescopic hangar used on Italy’s Nuove Unitร  Minori Combattenti (NUMC) a.k.a “Comandanti” class.

Gas turbine production was based mainly in Ukraine in SU time, Ukraine still has it. This was perhaps the most important reason why Russia was not able to go on with building Slava, Udaloy and Neustrashimy classes. Talwars built for India also have powerplants made by Ukranian “Zarya”. In contrast, boiler and steam turbine building is concentrated in St.Peterburg and one of reasons why Sovremennys were fitted with boilers was to maintain the production ability and technology.

Good point. Hadn’t thought of that.

is that what I think it is????????

It looks like it (whatever you were thinking)
Are those 4 openings towards the rear of the rear-superstructure?
If so, any fire control radar is probably located on the forward part of the rear superstructure (unless they are planning to place it in front of the bridge and forward superstructure …)

Sovremenny has a “telescopic” hangar, which is folded out when she carries a bird. It doesn’t mean, that You have to land on top of that structure, I think it will topple down ๐Ÿ˜ฎ perhaps You were thinking about an elevator like on Kirov or semi-submerged hangars also with elevator like on Kara?

He means a semi-recessed hangar like on Udaloy, with doors opening and part of the roof sliding forward to allow the heli to enter.

Perhaps the A380 could be used as AWACS … with antennea mounted internally :p

Ok, so they had a spare power plant lying around (from Varyag maybe?).

Anyway, with the current state of technology in russia, would it be feasible for them to come up with a suffiently powerfull gasturbine-based powerplant if they wanted to? If yes, why don’t they do this on Gorshkov? Or did they propose it and got rejected by IN?

They are only 620t and are to get hangars fitted below the helicopter deck IIRC.

Yep, I think they together with the Lurssen craft are the smallest helicopter carrier combattants that have (or are planned to have – see 26 in pic below) a hangar and support facilities. Next are the 2 Italian designed modified Assad / Wadi M’ragh class ships built for but never delivered to Iraq (675 tons). Story

    boilers???

What happened to the turbines that were originally proposed?

Well, as built, the Kiev class – like the Kuznetsov – are powered by 8 turbopressurized boilers, 4 steam turbines (200,000 shp on 4 shafts).

The post said the propulsion plant was ripped out of Gorshkov. My question is will a new ‘original’ propulsion plant be installed or will a new gasturbine based powerplant be installed?

Will she get a new set of boilers and engines, or will she get an entirely different powerplant (e.g. gas turbines)

    USS Boxer (LHD 4)
    http://www.boxer.navy.mil/Images/Boxer3.jpg

USS BOXER was built using more than 21,000 tons of steel, 400 tons of aluminum, 400 miles of electrical/electronic cables, 80 miles of piping and tubing of various types and sizes, and 10 miles of ventilation ducting. More than 16,200 gallons of paint were applied to the ship’s exterior hull.

I think you’re right about the LSD 42 (at least the LSD 41 class anyway) but it can’t be an LHA. The Tarawa class have 5″ mounts forward on either beam leavijg the flight deck narrower there. The ship in the pic doesn’t have these so it has to be one of the follow-on Wasp LHD class.

Yep, you’re right on that. I knew that ๐Ÿ˜€ Got carried away trying to figure out which particular combo of ships had visited Darwin and when.
