    AA, there is a very brief mention in an Air Britain Archive from 1991 which would seem to indicate that the Marmols operated a few of the Tiger Moths in West Germany. No further details given unfortunately.

    Hello Nagpaw,

    The Marmols (husband and wife as you thought) traded as a company called Air Ads Ltd or ADS (Aerial) Ltd. They did crop spraying and had contracts as far away as Sudan.ย

    Took a trip up to Oban on Friday afternoon to catch the arrival of Miss Pickup. The Catalina team were in Scotland conducting Operation Shetland 2024 which included a flypast over the Aberdeen home of John Cruickshank on the 80th Anniversary of the mission for which he gained the Victoria Cross. They also visited all the RAF WW2 flying boat bases in Scotland performing flypasts at each one.ย

    The Chipmunk pic must be pre-10th June 1977 as I’ve found a reference to N99140 being flown out of Alconbury on board a C-141A bound for McGuire AFB on that date.

    AA, I have come across two entries in Aeromilitaria for crashes at Stodmarsh – Dornier 17Z U5+ER of 7/KG2 at Paxton Farm on the 13th August 1940 and, on the 16th of the same month, another Do17Z of 3/KG2. Paxton Farm the more likely one possibly given J Boyle’s description of the event?

    Such a pity that so many photos and much information was lost in the transfer of the forum a few years ago.

    N9632 and N9730 were both with the School of Naval Co-operation during 1927.

    Cheers, Aerotony. Nice to hear the Lee/Swordfish connection is still being kept up.

    I did once see W5856 in the air but only as a speck in the distance! It was still under restoration at Strathallan when the collection closed. One of several aeroplanes that I would have loved to have seen fly there but it was not to be sadly.ย

    Hi Aerotony,

    Some more info for you on the aircraft in your photo –

    K8346 was delivered to C Flight School of Naval Co-operation at Lee-on-Solent 15.10.36 for TAG training then went to A Flight at Calshot and on to Co-op Flight Mountbatten in 1937.In February 1938 it was with the Seaplane Training Squadron at Calshot moving back to Lee-on-Solent in April that year to join the Float Plane Training Flight there. It moved on to 765 Squadron (still at Lee) on 24.5.39 remaining with that unit till April/May 1940.

    For 2 months after that the Swordfish was at Pembroke Dock with 764 Sqn During 1941 it was back with 765 at Sandbanks. After that it headed north to join 769 Sqn at Arbroath then 9(P)AFU at Errol. K8346 was struck off charge in October 1944.

    It certainly had quite a few moves in its life.

    I notice the date given for its arrival at 9(P)AFU Errol (April 1943) coincides with that of another Swordfish which had a brighter future ahead of it – W5856.ย

    The National Museum of Flight have two Lynx IVCs from an Avro Ten in store. Also there’s a licence-built version of the Lynx in the Italian Air Force Museum at Vigna di Valle if that counts.

    When I read the report of the accident involving FL994 and compared the pictures I thought it was possibly too much of a coincidence, Happy to have been of help Steve. Yes, quite a coincidence too that both you and your father finished on units numbered 111 – a nice little connection there ๐Ÿ™‚

    I’m not sure what type is behind the LeO 253, RT. Possibly Breguet XIX but that is only a guess.ย
