Nice! Hopefully they have better weather than we have in Perthshire!

    Hi Steve,

Is it possible that the collision happened in the Bahamas rather than the Far East? I wondered if Liberator FL994 might be the aircraft in the pictures? Involved in a mid-air 23.02.45 with BZ746 when with 111 OTU at Nassau.

I have to admit that all I am going on is the code on the nose which I assume must be either LA or JA. FL994 was coded LA.

    Details here – https://aircrewremembered.com/hayes-allan.html

    Hi RT,

I think the large bomber aircraft is a Liore et Olivier LeO 253 operated by the Brazilian Army Air Force. I have read that 3 were purchased in 1930 which would make the photo later than 1924 as you suspected. I don’t think the biplanes in front of them are DH60s – they look more like Avro 504s to me?

Enjoyed our day out at D&G on Saturday. There was a nice variety of cockpits on show and it was interesting chatting to the exhibitors and also catching up with some other forum members – FarlamAirframes and JohnnyKavanagh – great to meet you both again.

Interesting times at the museum as it expands and adds more buildings. Looking forward to seeing its progress 🙂

It’s a rare occurrence nowadays to see anything other than Pa-28s, Cessna 152s and assorted microlights in the skies above our patch of Central Scotland. However yesterday brought something different – Varga Kachina G-BPVK, one of only 3 on the UK register, flew overhead mid-afternoon.

Photo taken in 2022 when it dropped in to the Balado fly-in.

Assuming it is the same Fairey IIIF as the remains which were at Arbroath in the 1960s?

From Scottish Air News of Feb 1967 –

ARBROATH, HMS Condor – Fairey 111F (serial unknown). This aircraft had been lying outside at Guist, Dereham, Norfolk for over 30 years and was in a highly deteriorated state. It is believed that the machine had originally been taken to Guist from Bircham Newton for a fire-fighting display. In the event, the main structure of the fuselage and mainplanes survived, and in October 1964 the remains were taken to Arbroath. These are currently in storage. Large portions of the airframe are missing and corrosion is widespread. It is possible that reconstruction to non-flying condition could be carried out, but this would be a long job, and copies of the original constructional  drawings would be required. It appears that plans for reconstruction have been shelved, at least for the time being.

    Hi Creaking Door

I had a look through the Spitfire production list to see if I could ID that particular aircraft for you. It made a very sobering read as the number of possible candidates quickly increased. It was obviously a very dangerous time for 453 Sqn (and others of course). I’m afraid I couldn’t come to any real conclusion as to the exact aircraft shown in your pic.

I have a basic Find My Past account but have drawn a total blank so far. Tried searching Mr Jamieson in military records and just as a general search also marriage records for UK and Canada but have failed to find anything. I hasten to add I’m no expert though!

I have found a reference to a Flt Lt A. Jamieson with 234 Sqn but he was involved in an accident (happily ok) in July 1946 so he’s not your man either!

Sad news indeed. As a member of this forum Dave Fagan started and contributed to some very interesting threads and his Hampshire Airfields website was an incredible resource which he must have spent a huge amount of time and effort creating – a real labour of love. It’s good to know that efforts are being made to preserve much of his material as it would be very sad if all Dave’s hard work was simply to disappear.

If I remember correctly the website was created by Daveg4otu who used to frequent this forum. Hope all is well with him!

    Hi Newforest

The Wayback Machine at Archive.org is the only site I can think of that might be helpful but it is really hard work (unless there’s a better way of using it than I’m aware of). They do have quite a number of pages saved but making sense of the URLs is sometimes tricky. The link below seems to always open in Calendar view but if you click the blue URLs button at the right of same line it will give you a list of pages and photos available*

    https://web.archive.org/web/*;type=text/hampshireairfields.co.uk/*

    * I say available in a very loose sense! Sometimes it just comes up with a blank page or puts you back to calendar view but, trust me, there are some photos and web pages there! I’d like to think there might be a better resource out there or, better still, the Hampshire Airfields website will make a welcome re-appearance!

No worries, AM. Yes, I can see what you mean about the lack of bend and “flatter” appearance. Intriguing!

It’s not looking good, AA. I’m also getting a “page does not exist” message. Frustratingly the home page is visible on the tripod.com site but that is as far as it goes and it only serves as a reminder of the wealth of information contained on the Hampshire Airfields site. Hopefully it will be only a temporary problem as it would be sad to lose such an excellent resource.
