OOpsie…
Serves me right for speed reading…. I stand corrected Dave..;)
Damn….
Beat me……..Nice work mate very impressed with your workmanship.Very clean and tidy.Did you have original parts to copy or is it all by the seat of your pants stuff.Driving me crazy trying to work out the intercostal brackets. I am a bit ahead of you with F10 though..:) Here is what I,ve been playing with lately..And going insane with…
😀 Keep up the great work..It is inspiring…
Coupla aussies…
Clive Caldwell and Bobbie Gibbs both had personal aircraft serials.
And a champion AFL player
Wasn,t Bluey Truscott about 6’4″?And built like a brick outhouse to boot.
Early gunship..
Was looking over the assistant curators shoulder as he went over some old photos in the library. The Aussies slung a couple of M60 machine guns on the skids of Bell 47,s.MASH with attitude….
Correct for B17 tailgunner survival
Unless my memory is hazy, which it frequently is.I can recall seeing a pic of a B17 tail with its gunner compartment split open like a tomato can.Apparently an 88 shell exploded just in front of it propelling the tailgunner into open space.I think he is the only person to have survived a direct hit by an 88 shell. He came too and opened his chute luckily. His luck was that he packed spare flak jackets on the doors to prevent shrapnel entering. In the book “Aces” a P51 pilot was shot down and was pinned in the cockpit due to centrifugal force.About 50 feet above the ground his fuel tank exploded propelling his seat out onto the ground with him in it.The armour plate taking the blast. He awoke to find his plane littered around him in little bits and pieces.Anyone confirm these?
A colonial hard at work…
Safety first!!!!!!!:D It probably was Magpie mating season. They are blighters with their dive bombing in spring time.Cheers for the pic Mark;)
Survival stories…
Now this would be a big thread. Many more enlightened forumites will have a field day with this one.I have heard of a pilot who came down up the top end of Australia and walked back through swampy, mangrove, crocodile infested country to make it back to base after 6 days IIRC.Another would be at Millingimbi where a 457 or 452 pilot somersaulted his Spit into the ground at 200 knots after a low level dogfight over the field with a Zero.He crawled out of the wreck and walked back two miles to the radio tent while the base doctor raced over to the wreck to see if he was alive..
Brain missed a cog…
Is there some connection between Middle East and Burma? or is your geography a bit rusty? Burma is the Far East I’d say.
This is what happens after working all day in an old Lyshart Hangar in mid 30 degree heat.Sorry old bean yes I stand corrected…:o
I,m sure it,s not a cricket score….
But the thread is about pilots flying for their crews and their own lives against odds .In another famous duel A Catalina was lost with all hands with a one on one with a Uboat.Brave yes but a tragic loss as every life is precious.
Nahhh been done…
Couldn,t interest you in a 452 or 457 squadron colours……Not taking favourites here..Oh no!!!….”whistling innocently”:D
How about Middle East campaign colours..Burma etc…
Good thread….!!!
Ju88,s vs Sunderland is another good one.Grasshopper vs Me109 in Italy.:D
JDK thats heresy…
You really don,t like Spits do you JDK.It,s alright, you can tell us….”pssst where’s the Inquisitor”…..;)
Honestly it could be a range of aircraft as the only gauge that was inherent to the Spit was the elusive Nose up/down guage….A Spit pilot mate I know put his ASI around the clock twice in a dive in 44/45.If it stops moving then you,ve stopped.:o
Snowed in??
A perfect excuse for not being in the shed building the Spit hey Jeremy?:p Did you get the drawings for the Bfp parts Ok?
I can still just remember BBBS as a kid.God how time flies…
I will have to save my money and start getting these DvD sets.Only have SPR,Bridge too Far, BoB and the Lighthorseman.
One man amongst many…
Retired at crease..A good innings played….
Old pilots never die they just fly higher…God Speed Alex….R.I.P.
